NSYNC: "Gone"

BSB: "I Want It That Way"

Voted for the latter.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 27 March 2010 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

NSYNC would have a greater # of songs in, say, my top ten. But that one BSB song would be at the top.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 27 March 2010 04:10 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, a bunch of bangers

1 tearin up my heart
2 as long as you love me
3 quit playin games
4 larger than life (for real this sounds like daft punk producing michael jackson)
5 show me the meaning of being lonely
6 girlfriend (proto-justified obv)
7 i want it that way
8 everybody (backstreet's back)
9 u drive me crazy
10 pop

hipster puddy (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 27 March 2010 04:10 (fifteen years ago)

i think BSB murdered n sync in the max martin era, but all the celebrity singles are really great

voting for "pop"

Went with "Quit Playing Games With My Heart" but kinda wanted to vote for the underrated "Pop," and I kind of recognize the greatness of "I want it that way" -- but then "As Long As You Love Me" is kind of the twin brother of "Games with my Heart"

Cunga, Saturday, 27 March 2010 04:49 (fifteen years ago)

After looking at YouTube videos for some of these songs that I wasn't familiar with, I've come to the conclusion that the ballads these groups were best known for are their weakest material.

Best BSB:

1) The Call
2) We've Got it Goin' On

Best N*Sync:

1) It's Gonna Be Me
2) Girlfriend

naus, Saturday, 27 March 2010 05:06 (fifteen years ago)

"Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely"

Use to watch TRL just to see that video back in the day.

Sab, Saturday, 27 March 2010 05:17 (fifteen years ago)

think i maybe like 'nsync more as people but none of their singles except for maybe "bye bye bye" are inspiring any great need to re-listen, looking at them together like that, whereas with the BSBs it's like "man, i really want to hear most of these tracks right this second"

"We've Got It Goin' On" (bsb)
"Get Down (You're the One for Me)" (bsb)
"Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)" (bsb)
"As Long as You Love Me" (bsb)
"Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" (bsb)
"I Want It That Way" (bsb)
"Larger Than Life" (bsb)
"Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely" (bsb)
"The Call" (bsb)
"More Than That" (bsb)

^^these are the classix for me. finding the bsbs' greatest hits for £2 was a really good bargain back in 02. (the idea of paying as much as £2 for a cd seems ridiculous now though.)

voting "show me the meaning of being lonely". the harmonies on that are quite something. it was released on valentine's day in the uk!

illuminati girl (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 19 February 2012 16:38 (thirteen years ago)

They only had one combined number one because in their primes they never released physical singles of their songs, the exception being "It's Gonna Be Me", the only #1 on the list. This was at a time when physical sales were high enough that it was hard to hit #1 without it.

Also, they only receive play on top 40, which makes it impossible to get the cross-format airplay of crossover songs by e.g. Destiny's Child or Aaliyah, significantly limiting their radio airplay.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Sunday, 19 February 2012 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

Billboard's rules for their charts were so stupid back then.

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 19 February 2012 18:14 (thirteen years ago)

well at least the rules allowed these songs to chart at all. before 1998 if the physical single wasn't out, it was ineligible to be on the chart, period. (this is why you have enormous hits like 'torn' that only peaked outside the top 40, because the physical single was released way too late.) this is more of a label tactic -- withhold physical single releases so fans are forced to purchase the album. (it worked for me -- i ended up buying millennium when i walked into a shop hoping to find the 'i want it that way' cd single in summer '99.)

but yeah, 'i want it that way' was such a huge airplay hit that it would've basically been guaranteed #1 it had had a physical release at the right time. like, even without physical single sales 'i want it that way' cracked the top 20 on 1999's year-end chart, which is crazy.

jive did the same thing with britney's early singles, like for her first couple of albums. only 'baby one more time' reached #1 because it had a physical release. songs like 'sometimes' charted as so-called album cuts even though they were clearly singles. i often wonder how much better it could have done if people could buy it; even 'from the bottom of my broken heart' which radio barely touched, was a pretty big seller when released physically.

and yeah, at the time it was really tough to reach #1 without a significant amount of sales. the first song to do it was 'try again' by aaliyah, a massive radio hit.

teledyldonix, Sunday, 19 February 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

when did you guys stop buying physical singles?

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 19 February 2012 21:55 (thirteen years ago)

man voting for this poll would've been tough, so many great songs.

1) i want it that way
2) quit playing games (with my heart)
3) tearin' up my heart
4) thinking of you (i drive myself crazy) <--- chris kirkpatrick had such a boring and useless voice despite being able to hit high note, but somehow putting him on lead vocals for this one really worked
5) girlfriend
6) shape of my heart
7) more than that
8) the one
9) this i promise you
10) as long as you love me
11) music of my heart

teledyldonix, Sunday, 19 February 2012 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

my last two physical singles were... christina aguilera's 'genie in a bottle' and vitamin c's 'smile' (please don't laugh), which were both summer '99ish

a big part of the reason i stopped buying singles is because napster got popular in late '99 and i was all "yay piracy" at the time. and by the time napster was done, physical singles were basically extinct in america

teledyldonix, Sunday, 19 February 2012 22:00 (thirteen years ago)

My last cassette single: Jennifer Paige's "Crush" in late '98.

The last new CD single: Madonna's "Don't Tell Me." I wanted the remixes.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 19 February 2012 22:02 (thirteen years ago)

It's Gonna Be Me > Bye Bye Bye, for me. Feel it's one of the most shamelessly transparent pop songs, in a good way - neanderthal pop, Max Martin revealing the blueprint for his pop songs at the time without any layer on top. Every good melodical idea is hammered in. It's very exciting.

"Pop" came up on shuffle today. It's not much of a song is it? It's almost like an album overture or a collection of interludes that would appear between tracks on an album.

"Pop" was the single that got me to come around to boy bands. I still think it's a killer. Produced by BT of all people, which I guess makes total sense

for all the BSB resurgences we've seen over the last 10 years, it's disappointing they can't come up with a halfway decent single. they're still great performers!!

its kinda fun to watch for Joey Fatone, poor dude is almost always in the background. he also always seems to be on the verge of cracking up

frogbs, Monday, 30 August 2021 15:30 (three years ago)

he has kind of a sardonic face.

Lance Bass was supposedly almost fired due to his dancing but he seems to acquit himself ok there.

is there a dancing version of auto-tune that makes you look like you can dance, cos if so I can be in a boy band

Duke Detain (Neanderthal), Monday, 30 August 2021 15:44 (three years ago)

the "Pop" video has something like that in the end, idk if it's just edited really strangely but it looks super unnatural. I actually kinda liked the "we are commercial product" phase of NSync but I wish it was more meta and less "fuck you for saying we're a boy band!"
