Just reading a piece in the PRS mag by Feargal Sharkey, who is, apparently, the head of 'UK Music' whatever that is....

So...other musicians who crossed over to the other side of the desk? I can think of Chet Atkins, Mitch Miller, Herb Alpert.....wasn't Berry Gordy a muso once? there must be tons more.

In Norway, virtually everyone who was a popstar in the 60s, 70s or 80s later went on to become first songwriter/producer and then business manager, A&R manager or similar.

roger grierson from aussie punk band the thought criminals was always interested in the business side creating 2 labels of his own at the time. but he went on to head mushroom records worldwide for quite a few years.

Iain Matthews
His loss of direction in the early eighties proved frustrating for Matthews, and he gave up making music, choosing rather to take up positions as A&R rep’s for Island Records and Windham Hill.

Marc Chung left Einstürzende Neubauten and became a senior exec at Sony. Blixa Bargeld tells a great story about how someone relayed to Chung the news that Neubauten would be interested in signing to Sony. His response: "Let them send in a demo."

This is a pretty obscure one, but he was a big figure in my young years as a music nerd - Juan Carrera. He was the bassist for The Warmers, a D.C./Dischord band who played some of my favorite shows ever. He's now a talent manager/exec who is credited with overseeing Modest Mouse going platinum and stuff (I think he manages The Hold Steady and Bright Eyes as well).

Gerardo:

Now an A&R executive at Interscope Records, Gerardo was responsible for bringing Enrique Iglesias to the attention of Interscope Label Executives in early 1999. He also signed rapper Bubba Sparxxx.

Derek Shulman from Gentle Giant:

"Following his recording career, Shulman became a prominent record executive, starting as an A&R representative at PolyGram, where he signed Bon Jovi, Cinderella, and Kingdom Come, among others. He has also been president of Atco Records (where he signed the progressive metal band Dream Theater as well as Pantera). He then went on to become President of Roadrunner Records overseeing signings like Slipknot and Nickelback."

Michael Train, Sunday, 28 March 2010 01:28 (fifteen years ago)

Andre Harrell was one half of rap act Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (forget which one he was) before founding Uptown Records and becoming president of Motown.

Unless things have changed since I used to get tons of CDs and phone calls from him (I changed publications and have been putting off updating all the Music PR so I can have some respite from the hounding), Howard Wuelfing heads his own PR company called Howlin' Wuelf. He was always the single best PR guy, calling without fail, and if he didn't catch you, he would read his one sheets into your voicemail with a very, very deliberate vocal quality that he has... The entire one sheet. With all the PR speak. He would literally say "RYIL" into the phone. Actually not annoying at all though--very endearing--because he was such a sweet dude.

Ah, that's right. I remember checking his website when I was digitizing Nurses singles.

Ken from Bros.

For those who don't know, the twins from Bros paid their bassist Craig Logan a million quid to leave. They then went broke, and he went on to be head of RCA. Not anymore, some breaking news, Craig Logan steps down at RCA

The Man With the Magic Eardrums (Billy Dods), Sunday, 28 March 2010 10:32 (fifteen years ago)

Logan spent four years running the company, helping to break acts such as the Hoosiers, the Script, and Newton Faulkner

All three universally adored by ILM:

The Hoosiers: morelike The Rubbishers
The Script - Jesus Fucking Christ Ireland, Sort Yourselves Out
Newton Faulkner
