blue collar punk S/D (bouncing souls etc)

this is one of my favorite overall aesthetics on earth, the vaguely vintage sounding americana-tinged punk. gaslight anthem is the obvious recent big name here, but i'm also thinking social distortion and rise against and bouncing souls and (apparently?) some alkaline trio stuff too?

i've never heard any ak trio so they're kinda new to me but what else is like social d and the loved ones and sorta midwestern sounding punk

dude from the loved ones has one of my fave voices ever

btw not really looking to argue about class or the validity of "blue collar" as a descriptor for this stuff, just roll with me on this and help a dude find some new tunes if u plz

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 29 March 2010 02:35 (fifteen years ago)

btw yell at 1:47 above did a number on my throat last summer

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 29 March 2010 02:36 (fifteen years ago)

obv a lot of moments on the new titus andronicus hit at this too

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 29 March 2010 02:38 (fifteen years ago)

come on yall

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 29 March 2010 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

For the Midwestern part, maybe Dillinger Four. Check the tunes on their MySpace, like "Noble Stabbings" if you haven't heard them.

The entire Razorcake magazine aesthetic covers the non-Oi aspects of this.

Zachary Taylor, Monday, 29 March 2010 04:08 (fifteen years ago)

tiltwheel. Try this podcast. http://www.razorcake.org/site/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=22620.

I think I may be a fan of titus andronicus now, never heard of them before. I'll have to listen to some more songs.

Zachary Taylor, Monday, 29 March 2010 04:21 (fifteen years ago)

they added kind of a goth-y organ dirge element, but murder city devils maybe?

google suggests they might still be going, wow, i thought they'd packed it in like 5 years ago.

gotta say this is about my least favorite aesthetic ever, but i always kinda liked those guys.

goole, Monday, 29 March 2010 04:23 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i've always only known mcd as a hot topic goth band by rep, didn't know they did other stuff. will have to check them out for sure.

zach i have never heard of razorcake and u r amazing for bringing its existence to my attn

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 29 March 2010 04:32 (fifteen years ago)

holy shit zach i think that was the very tiltwheel reference in the history of ilx. my old san diego band had the privilege and honor of sharing the stage with tiltwheel on more than a few occasions '02-04, in fact our bass player was i think the first to fill in for jarrod after he died.

guess i'll add toys that kill and hot water music

iiiijjjj, Monday, 29 March 2010 04:33 (fifteen years ago)

FIRST reference excuse me

iiiijjjj, Monday, 29 March 2010 04:34 (fifteen years ago)

hoos u might like progagandhi's stuff altho it may be too stripped-down 4 u? doesnt really have the rusty-sounding aesthetic that im thinking of. the weakerthans do this kinda prairie despair really well at times. their 1st two albums fallow & left and leaving are your best bets

in regard to Razorcake, they inspire me every two months with pieces about maintaining integrity and fun in the face of age and indifference. The band interviews and reviews are entertaining and informative, but the essays and columns make me wish I'd done something with my life and inspire hope that I still will.

whatever, it's an endorsement.

Zachary Taylor, Monday, 29 March 2010 06:11 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i grew up listening to propaghandi and anti-flag and international noise conspiracy and love em all still

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 29 March 2010 06:16 (fifteen years ago)

Lazy Cowgirls?

sleeve, Monday, 29 March 2010 06:22 (fifteen years ago)

Lazy Cowgirls are great, but I don't think they are together under that name right now. Pat Todd and the Rank Outsiders is the current version. Anyway, "Goddamn Bottle" is something to be heard. And if you get a chance to see Pat Todd perform, with whatever band he is leading, it is worth it. Strange because he looks like Bob Hoskins but is one of the greatest singers and performers I've ever seen in a hi energy rock and roll band. or country or punk or whatever you call it when it sounds like the Ramones and the Rolling Stones and AC/DC.

Zachary Taylor, Monday, 29 March 2010 06:28 (fifteen years ago)

I'll throw in my bruvs Red Collar here, who tour around the East Coast pretty constantly, and take their name from their history of moving from the Pennsylvania to get a jobs in Chapel Hill, which neatly describes their sound, too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nlCGLIsimU&feature=related

bendy, Monday, 29 March 2010 09:55 (fifteen years ago)

Obviously not the same in terms of sound, but I saw Bouncing Souls a lot back in the mid-90s and probably the best bill I saw them on was with The Pietasters. There was definitely a similar mid-Atlantic blue-collar vibe going on. Check out their live album, not their studio albums.

I also to think of Bouncing Souls in terms of Dropkick Murphys, who I have never heard, but you'd see their tshirts at B.S. shows and I think they've toured together.

sleeve, Monday, 29 March 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

This stuff was huge in NJ in the 90s. Reminds me of kids in gas station jackets and Dickies seeing shows at the local firehall.

Spectrum, Monday, 29 March 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe not as anthemic as you're talking - but for 90's midwestern gas station jacket firehall rock: Didjits? New Bomb Turks?

And going back a bit: The Pagans?

Brio, Monday, 29 March 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

Lifetime might be along your lines if you haven't heard them. Whenever someone mentions BS I think of them.

like 'gruff punk' is a pretty stoopid genre tag etc but a dude looking for new tunes will probably be served pretty well by it

hoos we grew up suckling on the same musical teet. i think this was all tony hawks pro skater soundtracks to me. i still love this stuff and although i've fallen out of touch with it, or out of any regular listening, it's not because i don't think it's great. i think lawrence arms might answer your question, have you heard them?

iiijjj what was yr band in sd?

Prefer this The Strike:

But while it is "blue collar punk" I don't think Oi! music is what you're really after here.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:25 (fifteen years ago)

this stuff was a big thing for me as a teenager. saw D4 once and Paddy shared a glass of rum with me during an opening band. coolest thing ever.

circa1916, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:36 (fifteen years ago)

me too; when I finally got the chance to see D4, paddy was really sick with food poisoning :( (but it didn't stop him from belting out a few songs and getting naked)

ain't no thang but a chicken ㅋ (dyao), Tuesday, 30 March 2010 12:46 (fifteen years ago)

Cleveland Bound Death Sentence (D4 dudes and Cometbus) was great too

"I get through more mojitos.." (bear, bear, bear), Tuesday, 30 March 2010 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

ty guys for all the suggests

lessons learned from this thread

-when craig finn sings "me and my friends are like double whiskey coke no ice" he is not referring to the cocktail. liquor and "the drums on lust for life" never seemed like a bad pair to me but this makes a lot more sense.

-omg lawrence arms i had 1 tune on the rock against bush vol 2 from 04 but they are so awesome

-lifetime!!!!

Listening to Mush by Leatherface right now...goddamn this album kicks ass

kulinary gangsta (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

music like this is good at making lyrics that basically make no sense sound like deep and mystic Truth Bombs:

"everything living under the sun
must be for everyone
everyone living under a gun
must be someone"

^it's all about the melancholy yet hard chord changes

kulinary gangsta (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

kulinary gangsta (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

As someone mentioned, The Pagans for sure fall into this genre. What I immediately though of though were bands like Halo of Flies and a lot of the Amp Reptile stuff.

booty claps and harp solos (leavethecapital), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

Leatherface are the best band, and Mush is the best album. "Not a Day Goes" by hurts me to listen to. They are English, so I didn't talk about them before, but they sound Midwestern except for the Lemmy accent.

I bought a cd of Mush for a very reasonable price several years ago, I didn't know it was harder to get now. Check out their site for some cool mp3s http://www.x1984x.com/shipyards/discog/

Hoos did you get "Jersey's Best Dancers"?

"I get through more mojitos.." (bear, bear, bear), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 05:43 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know if this is too alt-country, but NYC's The Weight (former punks, I think) definitely channels some of the later, more rootsy Social D stuff. The MySpace tracks aren't their best, but the album Are Men is pretty sweet.

QuantumNoise, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

just real quick i wanna post the tracklisting for the new tiltwheel album "the high hate us"

make like a tree and fuck off

talkin' about eating pussy and drinking a bucket full of cum in a town full of pig pens
shit your pants (a rock opera)
can't remember shit
yet another obligatory pertylike tiltwheel song except this time it's like magic poetry
