yeah the main reason i started this thread was cuz i was listening to countdown to ecstasy and fantasizing about looping "showbiz kids" over a 909 beat

I know next to nothing about house and techno but please let this thread result in a mixtape link...!

Oh snap, that Shake track rules! I love that they used my Best Steely Dan Moment of All Time to make such a bangin' track.

I've long wanted to turn Glamour Profession into a smooth House loop like this, but I haven't been able to make it work yet. This gives me some ideas though.

I have a Kode9 live PA that feature a loop of the opening chords to Deacon Blues, also pretty dope. I'll have to snoop around the internet and see if I can find it.

Cex built some pretty good tracks around SD samples on Dannibal. "Free World" is probably my fav.

i feel like there should be loads more like that shake track. so much steely dan lends itself to the house template - metronome tight playing, tons of tension and release, drama and emotion

I think "Arise" has made my day. Are De La Soul "Eye Know" mixes too obvious/bad? The Daisy Bass mix alternates btw acid and hip hop, and discogs sez they were actual house mixes but I can't find online. this blog has the first batch of mixes for dl:

carl craig dub of cajmere and dajae's 'day by day' loops 'peg' and is mad good.

The Kode9 & Spaceape mix mentioned above is from a BBC session with Gilles Peterson. I'm pretty sure there are mp3s floating around out there. Deacon Blues samples comes about 5 minutes into the mix.

This thread inspired me to revist my Glamour Profession loop last night. Spent some time tightening it up, pumping up the beat, separating the bass line and chords, and whatnot. It was sounding pretty good by the time I shut down. Next I need to figure out how to turn it into a full-blown track. Will update as I progress.

love this thread!

Wow, that Billie Jean/Do It Again mix brings back some memories. I heard that track in some club on Lansdowne Street a looooooonnnngg time ago. It kinda makes me wonder why mashups were such a big deal in the past decade. There were so many great mixes happening in the late 70s and 80s. The whole mashup culture/Girl Talk zeitgeist thing just seemed like a weak rehash. Certainly didn't hold a candle to Jeff Mills during his Wizard years.

apparently there is a claude young track that samples "deacon blues"???

lord byron stingily (r1o natsume), Friday, 2 April 2010 23:59 (fifteen years ago)

Yesterday I added in a second sample from Glamour Profession that I'm going to use as a kind of turnaround. I also doubled up the bass lines with my own synth bass playing. Sounds pretty good, but there's one spot where it isn't quite syncing up as well as I'd like. I also did a nice sounding intro that is basically a single chord hit from the song drummed out in a nice syncopated rhythm.

hay guys my pal Cex did a whole cassette release on his Must Finish label that was entirely techno made out of Steely Dan loops- it was ridiculous fun, just a crazy Ableton-ization of the Dan-into-tech-house- he did it like two years ago, look around for it, it's great
