60's is the advent of rock and roll, 70's is disco and everything influenced by it, 80's by synthesizers and cheese, 90's grunge and probably also peak rap/music video period...

...and the 00's.....?!?!?!?!?!

I only mean music-wise.
For fun, guess what the next decade will bring:
My guess is the popularization of the indie-scene, such that it becomes the new "Alternative", where alternative doesn't really connotate an actual alternative to anything anymore but actual rock and roll music.

1980s: blue-eyed soul , music from or about africa and australia

2000s: all just one big blur to me

Also, Disney pop takes over the world, hip hop peaks commercially, R&B absorbs hip hop and moves forward, and rock music either collapses as an economic force or changes its name to Contemporary Country. The single returns, the album goes into decline, and the demographics of music consumption trend increasingly younger.
