Which currently shat-upon bands/albums will be singular touchstones in years to come?

Given how vehement I remember the 80's hate being before the DX7s came back with a vengeance, and how jaded snottiness is now within the reach of the humblest soul, what current message board pariahs will be re-evaluated/cited as influences in 20 years hence?

Hero Gringo (ecuador_with_a_c), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

John Mayer

tylerw, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:35 (fifteen years ago)

i don't know why, but it's just something I feel could happen.

tylerw, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:37 (fifteen years ago)

Coldplay

modern eunuch-like crooning (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:37 (fifteen years ago)

disagree - everyone will always know how bad Coldplay sucks

Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

science will have proven their suckiness in the future.

tylerw, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:40 (fifteen years ago)

coldplay are okay and the Eno thing is a pretty good narrative for the pitchforks of the 2020's to latch onto ("ppl said they were bland but they were secretly weird")

plax (ico), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:50 (fifteen years ago)

There's a site called Long Bets that does this stuff for, y'know, important issues, but obviously it'd be much harder to judge for more nebulous things.

Hero Gringo (ecuador_with_a_c), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not sure what that phrase "end of history" means but I feel like there's an "end of history" thing going on w/r/t cultural touchstones.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:57 (fifteen years ago)

Like how likely is it that a future coldplay faction can comprise any significant portion of a population relative to anything else?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 22:59 (fifteen years ago)

also coldplay is too popular to fit this

69, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno, Hall & Oates were pretty popular.

Hero Gringo (ecuador_with_a_c), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

And they're on the crest of a wave right now.

I had a friend say, "Train is one of those bands people like now, but that you know they'll appreciate even more in 20 or 30 years."

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 8 April 2010 00:32 (fifteen years ago)

Ha! I bought that CD along with a string quartet tribute to Korn and a Skin Graft Comp from the same cut-out bin.
I've yet to listen to the Chris Gaines and the Korn CDs. maybe in 10 years...

lol I thought this was an LJ zing but it appears to be sincere! if so I certainly hope you are correct. for sure it's the only album they did that people still talk about, really - and still one of my all-time favourites

the c4venger extort plan (acoleuthic), Thursday, 8 April 2010 00:40 (fifteen years ago)

I'm guessing Coldplay will be like, say, U2 are now where there's nothing to revive because they never went away. They'll still be huge with people who were our age now, but not cool to the kids. John Mayer is a better answer, but really it's the emos.

I'm having trouble thinking of any critically shat-upon bands, let alone ones whose music will be re-appreciated in 20 years. I can only think of the Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay, Creed, Nickelback, Daughtry, and Limp Bizkit, and at least two of those bands don't even exist anymore.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 8 April 2010 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

maybe change to Pitchfork shat-upon...

henry s, Thursday, 8 April 2010 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

ok here goes

The Dandy Warhols - Odditorium Or Warlords Of Mars will come to be seen as a modern psych masterpiece and their best record

XDDDDD

the c4venger extort plan (acoleuthic), Thursday, 8 April 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, I have a good answer: Jet. Because 20 years from now, all people are going to remember is "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?" (which is an admittedly fine song) as opposed to that album they did later on that had the gorilla pissing in its own mouth.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 8 April 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

Who wants to be the one to break it to Mr. Snrub that Creed has already reformed and Limp Bizkit has an imminent reunion?

The Black Eyed Peas.
I wouldn't be surprised if a number of emo bands start sounding more interesting 10 to 15 years down the line.

NASHVILLE COUNTRY: THE MUSIC OF THE FUTURE

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 8 April 2010 02:46 (fifteen years ago)

This is sort of a different question, but I was just thinking the other day how Green Day is probably a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band at this point, and at no point in their first 10 years would anyone have predicted that.

yah stuff like this & the 2nd my chemical romance album feel like they cld easily be reappraised once they get kinda divorced from the scene that birthed them

It isn't the DX7s that came back. Rather the knob-based analog synths that predated them.

cosign on the black eyed peas - they will be the kool and the gang of the 00's (ie. kool and the gang are awesome in retrospect, though as a 12 year old burgeoning metalhead i naturally hated them back when they were popular)
