~cankles~ (ice cr?m), Friday, 9 April 2010 21:20 (fifteen years ago)

on that criteria, should be a beyonce landslide.

The Brainwasher, Saturday, 10 April 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

i mean i have issues with jay too but beyonce i feel never lives up to the hype

The Brainwasher, Saturday, 10 April 2010 00:20 (fifteen years ago)

(maybe i expect too much)

The Brainwasher, Saturday, 10 April 2010 00:20 (fifteen years ago)

beyonce is still making good music, and jay-z is a complete embarassment now. so beyonce

k3vin k., Saturday, 10 April 2010 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

jay-z is not ugly, but Beyonce has all that.

nicky lo-fi, Monday, 12 April 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 12 April 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

musically, Beyonce wins in the now simply cuz "Blueprint 3" is an automatic forfeit.

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 03:12 (fifteen years ago)

that's not even jay-z's worst album

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

i haven't heard Kingdom Come......

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

kingdom come, american gangster & bp3 are a troika of bad old man rap

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:18 (fifteen years ago)

I liked American Gangster. a hell of a lot more than I liked BP3 (which I really didn't, at all).

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:19 (fifteen years ago)

I'll throw a punch in this fight again. American Gangster is tied with The Blueprint as my favorite Jay-Z record.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:20 (fifteen years ago)

damn 10 years flew by fast

iatee, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:21 (fifteen years ago)

o come on yes it is

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:21 (fifteen years ago)

the hype surrounding "american gangster" is one of the all time label-driven dupe jobs in rap -- it's not like jay-z forgot how to rap with KC, remembered how to rap with AG, and then forgot how to rap again with BP3 -- people were just desperate to believe that jay wasn't awful and they lapped up the dumb story behind AG & chose to ignore that the rapping & songs are horrible (altho the production is alright)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:22 (fifteen years ago)

kingdom come is worse -- at least you could argue that bp3 has good production

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:23 (fifteen years ago)

there are three good joints on AG -- "roc boys", the genuinely good jay-z single of the three albums, "ignorant shit", which was what, 6 years old or something by the time AG was released and "success" on which he nas totally has the best verse

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:24 (fifteen years ago)

kingdom come has a few good tracks imo - "prelude," "trouble," "lost ones" and the title track

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:29 (fifteen years ago)

oh and "oh my god" one of my fave just blaze beats

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:29 (fifteen years ago)

you could scrape out a listenable album out of the 3 albums

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:30 (fifteen years ago)

fwiw, I heard zero of the hype surrounding American Gangster and hadn't even read a review of it before buying it - I wasn't even sure what the opinion was on it, but mostly bought it cuz at the time I was really just getting into Jay-Z, and I liked it a lot.

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:31 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i mean, i'm not saying that every individual that likes it was brainwashed or something, just that the press at large was

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:32 (fifteen years ago)

the hype surrounding "american gangster" is one of the all time label-driven dupe jobs in rap

Uh, maybe? All I know is that I heard it the first time, thought DAMN JAY SOUNDS ON POINT AGAIN AND THIS PRODUCTION IS HOT and I still think that three years later whenever I put it on (which is probably once every six weeks or so).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:32 (fifteen years ago)

xpost I tend to think besides the bad lyrics on BP3, the lame and repetitive flow is what really makes it boring. both "Run This Town" and "Empire State of Mind" have essentially the same rhythmic backdrop ffs.

xxpost regarding press, well, I think a lot of that was going on during BP3 too. I read pretty cheery (if not calling it 'awesome') reviews of the album before getting BP3 on drop date and after 3 listens I couldn't find more than a track I liked. and taht's sad because most rap albums I can find at least 3.

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:33 (fifteen years ago)

i think "on to the next one" is pretty great -- i love the "buy my old albums" line cuz it actually recaptures the old jay-z sneer without the pandering get off my lawnisms of "death of autotune" (word to makeitpop) or the general boardroom emptiness of "run this town"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:35 (fifteen years ago)

Death to Autotune annoyed me about as much as Pantera annoyed me when they released the "Great Southern Trendkill" album. simple retort: if you don't like it, wait 4-5 years, eventually something else will replace it.

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:41 (fifteen years ago)

um so was the last Beyonce album any good

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:44 (fifteen years ago)

yeah

k3vin k., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:47 (fifteen years ago)

it's fucking awful

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:54 (fifteen years ago)

well, the first disc is -- the last disc has some joints

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 04:54 (fifteen years ago)

it's fucking awful but at least has "Single Ladies" to show for it

he's a radric mane (The Reverend), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 06:09 (fifteen years ago)

take it to the challops thread, rev

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 April 2010 06:10 (fifteen years ago)

Kingdom Come is terrible and i am no fan of American Gangster but i really gotta say BP3 is the worst ever imo, dude hit rock bottom and kept digging.

the ship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (some dude), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 10:27 (fifteen years ago)

i mean if you argue it at least has good production, i don't even know what beats you would point to.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 03:40 (fifteen years ago)

"Ego" is also awesome.

cupcake 24/7 (Tape Store), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 04:59 (fifteen years ago)

is that the one where she sings about her penis?

The Reverend, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 05:21 (fifteen years ago)

"i love his big penis"

tmi finney (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 13:22 (fifteen years ago)

a lot of my friends don't like ho rap because they don't like hearing women rap about their vaginas the way male rappers talk about their penises (well...), which never bothered me, but talking abt yr boyfriends penis via really obvious euphemism is maybe where i draw the line.

tmi finney (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

ego is the only good song on that album

horseshoe, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

she talks about her boyfriend's penis, then talks about her own

The Reverend, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)
