I heard this song in a store weeks ago, tried to get a snippet of the lyrics to google but couldn't hear a thing. Then I heard it in the same store today and figured I should find out what it is.
Here's what I know:-male vocalist-uptempo-late 80s-ish if I had to guess-the verses sound like this (closest approximation I could do) and there's whistling of the same tune in the song as well
It has to have been a pretty popular song, the store's radio is top 40 of the 60s/70s/80s type so nothing too obscure.

That's my guess based on the note pattern provided.

I definitely wouldn't ever expect to hear XTC on that type of programming, though.

... reached No. 32 on the UK singles chart and No. 104 on the Billboard Pop chart.

ie. not totally obscure.

Where the only XTC song that might ever be played on a station like that is "Mayor of Simpleton."

yep, that's totally it! thanks!

Was it in-store programming or an actual radio station feed? In-store programming often throws a surprise in here and there.

I can imagine hearing this on a Jack-FM type of station.

It was in-store programming - there's always something good playing when I go, usually I know what it is though

I was in a coffee shop today and heard a song I liked, I decided to Shazam it and it was XTC - Generals and Majors. I think I need to bite the bullet and download the song or something idk.

Heh. Reading this topic I was half expecting the answer to be "Wishing Well" by Terence Trent D'arby, which was a song whose identity had alluded me for many years. It also didn't help that I would often confuse it with Nu Shooz's I Can't Wait and Shanice's I Love Your Smile.
