gotta be physical graffiti side three. perfect song sequence -- "in the light" -> "bron-yr-aur" -> "down by the seaside" -> "ten years gone"

kamerad, Sunday, 11 April 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

Side 2 of Physical Graffiti over Side 1 of I and side 2 of IV.

Euler, Sunday, 11 April 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

i felt the same way till recently. those songs on side 2 rule so much it's hard to get over. lately i've been appreciating the quieter comedown of side 3 though, how the intro to "in the light" amps up jpj's synths in "kashmir." it's a smooth ride from there straight through "ten years gone"

kamerad, Sunday, 11 April 2010 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

Side I of IV, a smidgeon ahead of Side I of III

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 April 2010 18:57 (fifteen years ago)

Side 3 is great but I've never loved "In The Light" as much as the other songs on it; and side 2 is just a juggernaut of boss: "Houses of the Holy" is probably my favorite Zep song.

Euler, Sunday, 11 April 2010 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

Side 2 of Physical, just over side 2 of IV and side 2 of III.

sofatruck, Sunday, 11 April 2010 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

side 1 of Houses

Side 2 of III, followed by Side 1 of In Through The Out Door.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 11 April 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

Side 1 of III, then side 1 of I, then side 1 of HOTH.

nate woolls, Sunday, 11 April 2010 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

I went side two of houses of the holy.

physical graffiti side 2

side two of one. "you're time is gonna come" really should have been the album opener

Zep III side 2 is my jam, love that sequence.

No Mike Damone in the original post, no credibility.

A Century Of Elvin (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 12 April 2010 01:57 (fifteen years ago)

2 of IV IVEVA!!!!!!!!!!

kornrulez6969, Monday, 12 April 2010 01:58 (fifteen years ago)

Seriously. I was going to be boring and write, "Well, really, it's IV, Side 2." PG's side two is pretty great thouh.

III side 2 is where they move from become a boogie band to legends.

bendy, Monday, 12 April 2010 02:48 (fifteen years ago)

One more vote for Side Two of "four."
Listened to it this weekend, it's the fucking best.

Trip Maker, Monday, 12 April 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

Not being a fan of "Misty Mountain Hop" docks that side a bit for me, otherwise all aces. Maybe HOTH side 1 for me; not sure how big a fan I am of the opening cut, it's been ages.

I turn it up when I hear the banjo (Dan Peterson), Monday, 12 April 2010 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

Leaning side 1 of Houses but not 100% atm

repugnant appearance, Irish background, not an animal (Jon Lewis), Monday, 12 April 2010 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

III side 2 (it's the classic "departure point" for me) but good arguments could be made for IV and PG so whatevs

Shamandy Warhol (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 12 April 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

Side 2 of IV, all my favourite elements of Zeppelin are there: feelgood rock; cool eastern droney chord progessions; folksy prettiness; apocalyptic heavy blues.

Voted 'Zep II', side 2. The (dark-horse) runner-up: 'Presence' side 1.

Chooglin'alCarbon, Monday, 12 April 2010 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

I would've considered it if 'Achilles' had the side to itself, like those interminable things on The Song Remains The Same

Ismael Klata, Monday, 12 April 2010 20:28 (fifteen years ago)

Went for Zep I, side 1. (Good Times->Babe->You Shook Me->Dazed) Two of their hardest rocking and transportive songs (Dazed and Babe) and I've always found the call and response thing in You Shook Me really funny. The highlights of each album seem evenly spread across LPs though, like Stairway and Levee on IV for instance.

Davek (davek_00), Monday, 12 April 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

went IV-I for "Black Dog" and "The Battle of Evermore"

Bear Ana Gasteyer (HI DERE), Monday, 12 April 2010 20:34 (fifteen years ago)

IV-I is faultless. Could only've been improved by swapping Stairway and Levee.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 12 April 2010 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

I grew up with the cassette version of "Houses", and I still think Side One of the cassette (Song Remains the Same/The Ocean/No Quarter/The Crunge) flows better than either side of the LP. And still I'm not entirely happy with the sequence. (Or the fact that they withheld the title cut.)

Gonna go with Side Two of III, although Side Two of PG and either side of IV are all pretty voteworthy

PG side 2 is pretty much undeniable.

blair x-soul (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 30 May 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

but it has Kashmir so it is not the winner!

Presence side 2

The two softies were our bedtime listening my first year of college.... and still my faves - Side 2 of III (my vote) and side 3 of PG.

It's a personal peeve I don't expect anyone else to be on board with, but I just find that staccato, three-note vocal line ("I/was/sitting/in/the/park/one/day/yadda/yadda/etc.") annoying.

I turn it up when I hear the banjo (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

I was the lone soul who voted for PG Side IV. It sums up a lot of what Led Zeppelin was about, with the heavy/folky action going on, slammin' semi-acoustic jammin' alongside 'Sick Again' and things like that. It has been known to produce chills & smiles.

ImprovSpirit, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

So III seems like the consensus ILM favourite..neat.

Kashmir just came up on shuffle and it made me think: Zeppelin - unheralded hip-hop godfathers. It's more than just sample pickings; it's the immaculate production, the huge drums, you feel Jay-Z or someone could step in over Plant with minimal fuss.

Which also makes me think, if Zep were really canny about their legacy they would've sent Page/JPJ/Jason Bonham out on a reunion tour with a posse of rappers.

Keep it coolin' baby

Davek (davek_00), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

Also best Zeppelin song you probably haven't heard: Carouselambra from ITTOD. It's their Prog track.

Davek (davek_00), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

Not exactly their only one.

I voted side 2 of III but didn't think anyone would agree with me!

Sundar, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

Ok...what strike you as more...and I'm talking pure Prog rather than anything which happens to have an extended song length, multiple sections etc. All of these things ≠ progressive rock.

And what about their disco song...surely The Crunge is closest, right?

Davek (davek_00), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

Given that definition, I'm thinking Led Zep didn't really do a Prog tune.

In terms of disco, yeah - either "The Crunge" or maybe "Royal Orleans."

ImprovSpirit, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

uh Trampled Underfoot is their uber-disco moment imho

in my day we had to walk 10 miles in the snow for VU bootleg (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

You might disagree but I think "Stairway to Heaven" is pretty much 'textbook' prog going by genre characteristics such as those identified by Edward Macan: extended form with strong dynamic contrasts, contrasts between folk/pastoral and modern/electric aesthetics, expanded instrumentation (with recorders), changing metres (in the fanfare section), changes in tempo, more complex harmony suggesting Western art music influence and reduced blues influence (e.g. the introductory progression built over a chromatically descending 'ground bass'). I'm not sure that it's so far-fetched to see something like "The Rain Song" this way too. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "pure prog" though.

dancing to trampled underfoot at a club was my favorite zeppelin experience ever.
