President Keyes, Wednesday, 3 April 2024 00:51 (nine months ago) link

yeah, these will always be worthwhile imo.

i used to do whole sets on blend tapes like that ― i had an outkast ep produced by havoc, pharcyde produced by dj premier, yvette michele singing over "waterfalls", etc. etc. ofc back then, it was limited to whatever accapellas would show up on singles. i have firm opinions re:the validity of tge fan/dj made blend/remix.

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Wednesday, 3 April 2024 01:11 (nine months ago) link

i know next to nothing about mr. bigg. he was from alabama, had a diamond in his eye. "trial time" was a surprise minor sensation of two decades ago now. he sold "poppin my collar" to dj paul. dead almost nine years. i can't say much more. i never heard much apart from "trial time." "traffic king" sounds familiar. i never heard "time served," the celebratory conclusion to "trial time," until earlier tonight. a good use of his voice.

on an alternate timeline, Spinna is part of the production team on Beats, Rhymes & Life and it's a 9/10. I do love that Basement Khemist record, but on the whole, wayyyy too many of his beats went to lackluster MCs. What coulda been!

i can promise you that i owned a copy of this cd. or i must have. i wrote on ilm about sheek louch releases in the early 2000s, so my record is not up for debate. there's no way that i didn't have this. no, i saw it countless times in pawn shops and discount racks and never picked it up. that must be what happened. thank goodness. i could still be swept away tonight by swizz beats plicking at the keyboard on "all for love." the rest, if i had heard it twenty years ago, might have been forgettable. this is random old rap i am loving.

I just saw that DJ Clark Kent died. Coincidentally, I've been listening to Rakim's first two solo albums lately, on which Clark Kent is the credited producer for many tracks--including my favorite, "It's the R":

JRN, Friday, 25 October 2024 21:53 (three months ago) link

Also coincidentally, I recently listened to a podcast interview with Ski Beatz, where he talked about how crucial Clark Kent was to his early career. Really made it seem like that was the professional connection that made everything possible for him. And Ski is one of my favorite beatmakers ever, so as far as I'm concerned, that alone is a major contribution

i met dru down at an in-store on the promo tour for that album. was fun.

i've been going back to diamond d's mid 90s instrumentals. he sampled vibes a lot. something about those original quantized mpc drums just does old blue note loops justice:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTKuoSv9kDs

diamond ― "this one (instrumental)" (1997)

also prefer the version of this without busta rhymes screaming "THIS ONE! RIGHT MUTHAFUCKIN HERE!!!!" on repeat.

and if i can get fourth dimensional for a moment: put some funky chicken pickin guitar stabs over a lovely vibey slightly higher fidelity instrumental like that and you basically get fishmans beats:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4V72ZJEWII

fishmans ― "pokka pokka" (1997)

also fishmans beats remind me of chops from the mountain brothers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVU4DAHg5us

the mountain brothers ― "galaxies: the next level" (1999)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HR4HTtnKhjY

the mountain brothers ― "paperchase" (1999)

embeez also some of the first asian american created hiphop i remember. philly definitely the house.
