Help me with a playlist of uncool post-college soft rock one hit wonders from about 97/98

Stuff's that's probably standard in the type of bar I never go to. I'm looking for a certain feel, and that feel is more important than strict adherence to the release dates or 'one hit wonder' requirements.

so far, I've got

Eagle Eye Cherry - Save Tonight
Natalie Imbruglia - Torn
Semisonic - Closing Time
New Radicals - You Get What You Give
Wallflowers - One Headlight
Third Eye Blind - Semi Charmed Life
Ben Folds Five - Brick
Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me
Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at Tiffany's
Paula Cole - I Don't Want to Wait
Donna Lewis - I Love You Always Forever

Left off Fastball because they were always too goofy for me to think of them in the same light as these 'serious' artists. Left off The Verve Pipe's 'Freshmen' because it's just too dark for this. I'm looking for wistful but optimistic summer evening tunes dudes. Included 'Brick' even though dude had a huge following because it's still the only song I've heard from him. Similar deal with third eye blind, though I have heard their other 'hits.' I just think they suck. Left off "Sex and Candy" and "Lovefool" for being a little too novel. Left off "Bitch" for not being very good. Left off Nada Surf and Harvey Danger for being too smart for this crowd. Left off Tonic for being no fun, Presidents of the USA for being too much fun. I'm conflicted about everything from "breakfast at tiffany's" down, but I'll likely sticking with them.

I've already scanned this thread, which is full of a lot of "I don't like this music" or "they were HARDLY a one hit wonder" that I'd rather avoid here. If you're too cool, man that's fine. there are still two active threads where you can make sure everyone knows you're smarter than shaggy 2 dope.

Anyway, if you made a mix for a middle school sweetheart in this era can probably help me out.

Also, if you're going to include "Breakfast At Tiffany's", you might want "She's So High" by Tal Bachman. Both annoy the hell out of me and they blend together in my mind.

Wishes he picked a cooler name. Fat. (will), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:27 (fifteen years ago)

Primitive Radio Gods, White Town, and Fatboy slim are all good recs, and then I think I have to go with 'Bittersweet Symphony' too, since it and 'Praise You' are in the same head space for me. I've been meaning to hear their respective full-lengths for a decade now.

close but no cigars to Macy Gray (too late) and Dishwalla, which is just a bit too early/young/angry

Fellini.Kuti, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

how about "Lovefool" by The Cardigans?

etrian odysseus (cozen), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

And, begrudgingly, I may have to add Citizen Kings "Better Days (And the Bottom Drops Out)" because I made the mistake of listening and it's in my head now, and OMC for the same damn reason. But I will NOT include "steal my sunshine."

Fellini.Kuti, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

Glasgow band The Hector Collectors performed all of these songs as part of a 'late 90s one-hit wonder' medley (not all songs are strictly eleigable, some liberties were taken):

# Breakfast At Tiffany's
# Steal My Sunshine
# Nanny In Manhatten
# Walking On The Sun
# Kiss Me
# Little Pink Stars
# '74-'75
# You Get What You Give
# My Own Worst Enemy
# Flagpole Sitta
# Every Morning
# Drinking In L.A.
# The Way
# Goddess On A Hiway
# Dance The Night Away

matchbox 20 is like the center of this nucleus, right? i remember liking "to the moon and back" by savage garden though it was barely a blip. how the hell did fatboy slim end up here i wonder now that i think about it? the "funky and fun" side of this format for those w/ friends who liked jam bands and/or sublime? sheryl crow otm too; she seems more representative of this particular era than lilith fair chix imo.
