They've been covering that song since at least 2000, it appeared on a couple of the official bootlegs from that year. Not sure why he's reading the lyrics though.

yeah, apparently that footage is from a tour dvd from that era. no idea why i never heard their version before, but...

ian, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:27 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, didn't mean that to be snarky or anything, just really familiar with their version from my PJ fanboy days. They used to play covers out of an extended "Daughter" jam all the time, frequently it was this one or "Another Brick in the Wall" or sometimes "Androgynous Mind".

pearl jam were my favorite band up until abt Binaural tbh. so i'm not trying to be snarky either like "look @ pearl jam lol" but... you know, reading the lyrics from a sheet of paper is a good way to kill any performance.

ian, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:34 (fifteen years ago)

Totally agree! I've seen them do this song live before and heard it so many times that I'm really surprised to see him needing to read the lyrics.

how the hell did you go from pearl jam fandom to liking all the good stuff you like now in such a short period of time? that's some evolution. cuz, and without being snarky, pearl jam are really kinda...um...tedious. in large doses anyway.

scott seward, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:41 (fifteen years ago)

scott, i mean, i was like 12 when pearl jam were my favorite band. 13 maybe. it's been more than ten years!

ian, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:43 (fifteen years ago)

also, the reasons i like the music i like now boil down to:

my uncle playing be pearls before swine & the flying burrito brothers
getting into sonic youth around age 13/14, and then the dead c & then siltbreeze records etc soon thereafter.

Not sure if you are talking to me scott, but I started being really into Pearl Jam in '91-'94, when I was 15-18, so I don't think thats terribly weird. I was young, living in central Illinois, and hadn't yet been exposed to a lot of good shit. I fell out a little until the glut of 2000 bootlegs came out, and due to a really weird place I was in at the time I found it really comforting to lose myself in familiar music. Since 2000 I've paid some attention to them, I still think they are a lot better live band then most people want to give them credit for. As far as the studio albums since then, meh.

Everyone starts somewhere, Scott! And I refuse to believe you don't have a tedious skeleton in your closet somewhere. :-D (I wonder what mine is.)

itt: awful band does a cover

☀ ☃ (am0n), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

nah, i always had impeccable taste. i did buy a thelonious monster album once though.

and yeah i know we all have to start somewhere. i'm not making fun. you would think that teen pearl jam fandom might lead to harder more tedious drugs though in a lot of cases.

scott seward, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

But even when I was a huge Pearl Jam fan, I still made time for other stuff. I wasn't like locked in my room with Ten playing over and over and over again.

"black" is the only pj song i ever really liked a bunch. cuz i'm goth like that. type o negative cover of black would be even more awesome though.

scott seward, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

Common ground there scott, that would be an awesome cover.

m@tt (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

scott, have you heard the pearl jam 'no code lp cuz it is my favorite one, and i do happen to have a spare vinyl copy sitting around(!!!)

ian, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

i always wanted to hear binaural, was it really recorded in binaural?

m@tt (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:07 (fifteen years ago)

Fuck, I should get ahold of some dead moon, i used to listen to my roommate's DM CDs and they were awesome when I saw them live. All I can remember now are 'God Damn I hate The Blues' and '54-40' which were both fucking jams.

The Echoes of the Past two-disc compilation ain't a bad place to start.

"scott, have you heard the pearl jam 'no code lp cuz it is my favorite one"

is that the one with the cool vinyl package with the art photo cards in it? i had a copy of that. 3rd street jazz was selling them for 2 bucks and i couldn't resist. sold mine on ebay though. their stuff is rilly good to sell on ebay. i can't say i ever played the actual album much though. maybe once. i had the mirror ball one on vinyl too. that was pretty good. sold that too though.

scott seward, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

I still love Pearl Jam and look forward to attending one of their really long concerts this summer.

Shannon Whirry and the Bad Brains, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

um you guys do realize that members of pearl jam probably played with Dead Moon quite a few times?

(ie, the cover was probably not EddieV's idea?)

One would assume so

I Smell Xasthur Williams (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 16:49 (fifteen years ago)

three years pass...

i really love when they do this song as a coda to Daughter

also 3 years later but: Eddie reading off a lyric sheet is not indicative of the song's difficulty but of Eddie's general terribleness with lyrics. If anything it means he really likes the song and wants to sing it right and not fuck it up like we all expect him to <3
