remember the first time I heard Heart Full of Soul...working at McDonalds in Brighton MI ca. 2003...thought it sounded alot like Doolittle-era Pixies actually...

Over Under Sideways Down is the jam, though, I kinda hope it wins...

"Shapes of Things"

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:12 (fifteen years ago)

Was 'Stroll On' never a single?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

Happenings
or Heart Full of Soul.
Hard for me to decide between those two.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

xp Stroll on is good, but I like their original Train Kept a Rollin cover even more with the simultaneous duelling verses; in some ways its the most psychedelic thing they've ever done

Chris Isaak's cover of "Heart Full of Soul" is what made me track down the Yardbirds in the first place, and it's really a hard song to beat.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

I'm telling ya I voted off the top of my head, but OUSD is probably the best...awesome psych guitar riff over a Bill Haley drumbeat plus an awesome druid-psych breakdown...it's TOPS!

gonna have to change jobs & change gods (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

like, Over Under Sideways Down is one of the greatest rock songs ever!

(the main riff was featured in all those Observe & Report previews)

Happenings is way more intense and psychedelic imo but yeah OUSD rules too.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

It's between those two for me. Think I'm going for Happenings. Yeaahh.

I had thought 'Train Kept A-Rollin' was Zep's version xp, and that The Yardbirds never got theirs down except as 'Stroll On' - need to track this down I think.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

no, there is a regular yardbirds train kept a rollin' on the Ultimate Yardbirds 2CD rhino comp

voted over under sideways down

btw the comp i just mentioned is AWESOME and a perfect "all the yardbirds you will ever need" for the casual fan. great liner notes too! (some by cub koda RIP)

m@tt (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i have that matt! it is really cool! the last half of the first disc is seriously unfuckwithable

"Over Under Sideways Down" is great but I don't get thinking it's better than "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" let alone "Shapes of Things".

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, and in a limited context (the first half of the first disc) i even get down with the more trad clapton era blues covers stuff...even though i always kinda feel like any early period blues covers era of any british band is about as good as any other (like pretty things or yardbirds or small faces or stones etc etc)

Photo finish between "Over, Under, Sideways, Down," "Shapes of Things," and "Heart Full of Soul." I'd put those three up against pretty much anyone's three best. "Shapes of Things," I guess.

clemenza, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

xxp yeah, same here. it gets a bit samey/academic for me, but once you hit Heart Full of Soul, it's nothing but straight goodness...the first half of the 2nd disc is great too...OUSD, HTYTA, Psycho Daisies, The Nazz are Blue, Hot House of Omagararshid, What Do You Want, I Can't Make Your Way, Turn Into Earth, White Summer (practically a Zep song)...it's great stuff!

gonna have to change jobs & change gods (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

jeff beck pwns eric clapton as a guitarist on every level, it's not even close

m@tt (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

'White Summer' *is* a Zep song, is it not?! I'm sure I finally tracked it down somewhere a couple of years back (their dvd set?) and being disappointed that it's basically just 'Black Mountain Side'

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 22:01 (fifteen years ago)

xpost i'm willing to agree to that

Yardbirds live version of White Summer is pretty sweet, tho.

wrong. white summer is a weirder more raga-y song, black mtn. side is the catchier ABriggs/BJansch groover.

I voted for Evil Hearted You but it was a tough choice between it and Happenings.

Jim, Monday, 26 April 2010 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

If B Sides were part of the poll I would have voted for "Think About It", it may actually be my favorite Yardbirds song.

Jim, Thursday, 29 April 2010 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

OUSD is probably the best...awesome psych guitar riff

hell yeah Suggest OTM

If anyone votes for Ha Ha Said The Clown they need to get their ears checked.

Jim, Thursday, 13 May 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

no love for I'm A Man?? My vote goes to Heart Full of Soul but I'm A Man is a close runner up.
