I'm goin' with every "SAVIORS OF ROCK!!!" narrative that cropped up throughout the decade, whether it was The Strokes or The White Stripes or The Arctic Monkeys or w/e

Joanna Newsome, Devandra Banhardt (sp?) and the whole back to the beards folk schtick + Animal Collective.
Although, I've lately been wondering if I should try and listen to some AnCo pre MWP, seeing as how they're oft cited as precurors of glophy/chillwave; however, I maintain Russian Futurists as being way ahead of the glo-fi curve, 'cept very few know/care about him.

coldplay? don't think i've ever met another person whose known animal collective to exist.

the number of times something new came out last decade that everyone fell for, only for me to shrug off with a "meh, i don't see how this is any good", only for me to 180 a month or two later... i find myself getting increasingly wary about dismissing things too soon. with stuff like dubstep, i was sceptical up until only maybe two years ago. i suppose it might have been because the early stuff wasn't as ebullient as more recent stuff, or a number of other factors, but i proved myself wrong and ended up really liking it.
― village idiot (dog latin), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 11:38 (fifteen years ago)
there's been a huge knee-jerk backlash against Animal Collective; largely from people who only really listened to MWPP and didn't "get it" immediately. Those who've followed the band from their early-to-middle period can place this album contextually within their catalogue as a branch and extension of a sound. Comparing it to something like Sung Tongs (well worth a listen, even for naysayers), and while they are related, the sound is very different.

xxpost: I mean I've done 180s too, but hearing something like The White Stripes for the first time, it was pretty easy to tell that we weren't 6 months away from collectively evolving into some kind of Stonesian boomer-rock paradise, regardless of how cute Jack and Meg's outfits are
― INSUFFICIENT FUN (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 11:49 (fifteen years ago)
This question doesn't work as well as the other one because there aren't really things that "everyone" "falls for" - if by everyone you just mean your immediate circle of friends or lots of ppl on a messageboard or w/e, then maybe, but if you take even a couple of steps back from some currently-hyped entity it tends to be obvious that there are vast swathes of the listening public that don't even slightly give a shit

LJ you live in england, I am sure you can think of at least ten thousand examples of people around you getting super worked-up about mediocre music if you put your mind to it
― INSUFFICIENT FUN (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 11:52 (fifteen years ago)
It's the 'everyone BUT you' bit that's annoying to me. There have been some highly irritating buzz bands, but none of them have been universally loved, and I don't want it to seem like I'm a shining beacon for sacred truth. My first instinct on seeing this title was 'lol LCD Soundsystem' but then I was thinking of ILX rather than everyone, also really not everyone on ILX loves them, also it's really freaking annoying for everyone else when I bang on about how I can't stand James Murphy

Yeah you got me... But there are still glimpses of half-decent songs on that first album. A big problem with lot of bands in the 00s is that they not only had songs, but schtick to go with it. "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" was an amusing and fun pop-rock anthem until Justin Cabbagefillings started believing he really was a proper rock star. But yeah, the Darkness were the Kula Shaker of the '00s.
― village idiot (dog latin), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 11:57 (fifteen years ago)
I mean, sorry for hating on this thread, but it's a reaction against an inner instinct (which MUST be suppressed) to go full ham on any number of moderately-hyped bands I've perceived as selling mundane trash to the people
― pretty girl, filking a clown (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 11:57 (fifteen years ago)
one day there'll be a thread on ILX where 80% of replies aren't made up of the semantic picking apart of the original poster's question.
― village idiot (dog latin), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 12:01 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, it's phrased pretty innocuously tbf
― POLL closes: April 31st (in 100 years) (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 12:03 (fifteen years ago)
It's not so much a semantic issue as a personal longstanding aggravation at seeing stuff talked about as if it's captured the national imagination when it's quite obviously not the case
― neden magnet (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 12:19 (fifteen years ago)

Early 00s mainstream R&B pop. Just as manufactured and plastic as boy/girl bands, and with a lack of tunes in addition.

The New Concise Larousse Gastronomique describes spoom as: "A type of frothy sorbet, which used to be a great favourite in England, made with a lighter syrup than that required for a true sorbet. As it begins to set, it is mixed with half its volume of Italian meringue."
