All things considered, if Mark E. Smith asked you to, would you join The Fall?

I joined The Fall for my gap year. Great fun except when Mark called me a cunt for having cider at the pub one night.

Ha, I was just browsing the Domino website re the 2LP version of Clut.
In a word, no.
It's a question posed in his book, basically. MES goes around saying "You! You're in the fall NOW!" and people going "... OK" and MES going "Pack now for Bremen!"
― Mark G, Thursday, 15 April 2010 11:02 (fourteen years ago) link
The problem with joining now is that MES's liver will have packed up before he grudgingly gets round to admitting that he should never have kicked you out of the group, bottled you onstage or left you stranded at an airport in Valdivostock
― Dr X O'Skeleton, Thursday, 15 April 2010 12:31 (fourteen years ago) link
Valdivostock
It's your own fault, you should have been in Vladivostok.

I would join The Fall. I'm unemployed at the moment, so it's not like I'm, you know, doing anything. And instead of having a 3rd party outsourced advisor tell me something like "Try cold calling two or three potential employers a day to see if they have any unadvertised vacancies", I'd much rather hear MES saying "Stop playin' that fookin' chord, you cnut!!! You're SHIT-ah!!!! <throws ashtray>". Because then at least I'd know where I was, you know.

"There is one great thing that you will all be able to say after this tour is over and you are home once again. You may be thankful that twenty years from now when you are sitting by the fireplace with your grandson on your knee and he asks you what you did in rock and roll, you WON'T have to cough, shift him to the other knee and say, "Well, your Granddaddy shoveled shit in Louisiana." No, Sir, you can look him straight in the eye and say, "Son, your Granddaddy rode with the Great Fall and a Son-of-a-Goddamned-Bitch named Mark E. Smith!"

You know, the thing is to play it with an inflection. " - MES

― Bashful Johnny C. (staggerlee), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 23:02 (fourteen years ago) link
I don't know - I'm like, employed and stuff? I like the Fall! I just think you'd have a whirlwind three months of being shouted at, unbearable at the time but obviously amazing in retrospect, then after that you'd spend yr remaining 40-50 years stumbling into bushes and smelling of urine.
― Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 23:09 (fourteen years ago) link
I never voted in this, but I would totally go for it. Can't play an instrument for shit, but maybe that increases my chances? Even playing only two shows before getting abandoned at a bus station in the middle of Bumblefuck, Iowa would be far far more interesting than anything else I've done lately.

I've listened to some tunes by The Fall on Youtube, I'd rather join pretty much any other band than The Fall. Just the idea of having to listen to their "singer" day after day would be sheer torture.

I make my living on tour. When a tour goes to shit, there are few shitty jobs that are worse. It's not "well, this job fucking blows, but at least I'm seeing this exciting new place!" it's "my worst day washing dishes was better than this godforsaken tour." Which is how you would feel every day on a Fall tour.

The whole "miserable experience" thing, I don't get. I mean, yeah, the band has had tons of members, but there have also been members who were in the band for years and years, and various former members have rejoined the band at times. I can't imagine those things would be true if it was so terrible.

Actually, I sort of already came up with this idea - me and the mister are in an imaginary band that does twee versions of ridiculously offensive tracks (i.e. DJ Assault's 'Ass'n'Titties' rendered as 'Hugs'n'Kisses') and we are called... Kitten Conspiracy.

Not sure about this in Britain or Europe, mostly members seem to have a gas, but totally otm when it comes to the car crash that is The Fall in the States. Really hoping this excellent new incarnation doesn't go there, despite the deprivation of US fans because if they go out, they won't be coming back.
