Okay I couldn't find a thread on this LA label, so here it is. Tons of stuff and most are very limited. I have only heard a handful (well maybe a couple handfuls) of bands. help search/destroy this label

God, Heavy Deeds so good. On Patrol is good, too.
I have this little teenage friend with a bunch of old nnf tapes. I should call him & ask him what up.

Psychic Reality/LA Vampires split is pure shit. Didn't they put out one of the Dolphins Into the Future LPs, too? Terrible, regardless of label.
Blank Realm LP was pretty good; cassette EP was better, I thought. That Topping Bottoms cassette was fantastic. Sun Araw, Magic Lantern, (new) Pocahaunted, plenty of Raccoo-oo-oon, Wet Hair, etc. = Search. Plenty more where that came from, too. Great label.
― winnebago taco, Friday, 16 April 2010 03:36 (fifteen years ago)
I kinda dug that Dolphins Into The Future LP. It was nice. 2nd the Pocahaunted/C. Carter & Swans/Ex-Cocaine recs, though the latter mostly for the ex cocaine side. totally underrated band.
― ian, Friday, 16 April 2010 03:41 (fifteen years ago)
Re: Dolphins, I just can't get into anything/much of anything in that whole Skaters biosphere. I dunno.
― winnebago taco, Friday, 16 April 2010 03:48 (fifteen years ago)
huh, I didn't think it was a skaters related project, nor does it sound much like them... i dunno though. so much of that stuff is willfully obscure. i did like the secret abuse stuff too.
― ian, Friday, 16 April 2010 04:14 (fifteen years ago)
i think it sounds like a lot like james ferraro's solo stuff. and i fucking love almost every skaters side project i've come across, as well as that dolphins into the future lp. hard to imagine why anyone wouldn't like it tbh
nnf is sometimes a good label, but sorta spotty too
― a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Friday, 16 April 2010 22:50 (fifteen years ago)
Blank Realm LP was pretty good; cassette EP was better, I thought.
Initially i was like nahhh - But yuh clean shoes, fuck so dope. I know that this stuff was recorded baot 1.5 yrs ago too, fyi.
― wilter, Monday, 19 April 2010 10:06 (fifteen years ago)
They sound more like Van Halen now
― wilter, Monday, 19 April 2010 10:08 (fifteen years ago)
one of my favorite labels...although I agree on the Psychic Reality/LA Vampires thing. There's one LA Vampires song that is pretty dope tho.
Sun Araw is pretty much the best. New Heather Leigh LP is great. My Estrogeneration comp is kinda spotty, but when it hits, it hits hard. Secret Abuse and Social Junk LPs are fantastic.
― jonathan - stl, Monday, 19 April 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)
Oh, Barn Owl too. Although it seems they're doing a lot of their stuff with Digitalis and Root Strata now.
― jonathan - stl, Monday, 19 April 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)
Word on that Heather Leigh reissue. So good. Just got my Magic Lantern LP and 7", too. Hot DAMN, search it out. Wow. Much better than the new Sun Araw.
― winnebago taco, Monday, 19 April 2010 18:41 (fifteen years ago)
yes, ex-cocaine are so underrated. that side is a bomb
― rizzx, Monday, 19 April 2010 20:36 (fifteen years ago)
Placed and received a mail-order, recently. When it arrived, it had a bonus CD-r which I hadn't ordered and of which I've never heard. It was in a black jewel case. Written on the front in what looked like white out were the words "EARTH MASTERS." Six tracks, about 15 minutes long. Sounds, uh...like a Not Not Fun release. Lo-fi, outre psych-folk...Pacific NW-y. I dunno. Anybody have any fucking idea what this thing is?
― winnebago taco, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 17:41 (fifteen years ago)
the sun araw is da best summer music eva. temperature, sunniness and humidity are directly proportional to how much you enjoy it.
― imma sb (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)
xp: I ordered the new Magic Lantern stuff recently, and I didn't get anything cool like a cdr, but what I did get was a fucking empty Raccoo-oo-oon lp cover. You gotta be shitting me.
― van smack, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 23:28 (fifteen years ago)
I also got the insert from Wet Hair's Dream, which featured a "Recorded in December 2012" typo (well, I assume it's a typo...?). But I don't really care about that. I just wanna know what the fuzz them tunes are.
Of note: In the past, I have received many random inserts, empty sleeves, a test pressing of the new Blank Realm LP, and a sleeveless Odd Clouds LP. Oh, and they once sent me all of their then nearly OOP cassettes because something I ordered wasn't in stock. Can't say that I really needed an Expensive Shit cassette, but what are you going to do? Not just send me back my $5, I guess.
― winnebago taco, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 23:41 (fifteen years ago)
to be fair; they also send stuff out that never reaches its destination. happened couple of times with me and a friend. not so rad
― rizzx, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 13:50 (fifteen years ago)
I thought I'd post this here, since most of his music is on this label.

Sun Araw kills it! Related in some way to Magic Lantern, I think - but I don't follow those details quite as closely as I should.
― ImprovSpirit, Friday, 7 May 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, he and the guitarist behind him (William Giacchi, i believe) are in Magic Lantern.
― van smack, Friday, 7 May 2010 17:48 (fifteen years ago)
been meaning to check him out. if that's what his album sounds like i can live without

i can do without as well..bawring
― rizzx, Friday, 7 May 2010 19:28 (fifteen years ago)
That Neil Young cover is not indicative to what most of his music sounds like. Check out anything from Heavy Deeds or Beach Head. But if that clip annoyed you, maybe just pass on him all together. Better yet, just listen to Magic Lantern.
― van smack, Friday, 7 May 2010 20:57 (fifteen years ago)
Magic Lantern > Sun Araw
Fewer releases = greater quality control.
― winnebago taco, Friday, 7 May 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)
Not Not Fun is my favorite current record label. Even their not so good releases are worth hearing once or twice. Anyway, whoever said that the Psychic Reality/LA Vampires split LP is pure shit is fucked in the head. That's easily one of the best releases of '10 so far, from any label. Some crazy beats, rhythms, and samples going on in that one.
Also, while I generally prefer Sun Araw to Magic Lantern, I must admit that Platoon is better than On Patrol. Both are fine albums, though.

― Mexico, camp, horns, Zappa, Mr. Bungle (Matos W.K.), Thursday, 20 May 2010 07:59 (fifteen years ago)
I will go to Hell/my grave before having anything good to say about that Psychic Reality/LA Vampires split, but it's all good. To each, his/her own. I just...oh, man, I hated it. Can't love 'em all, right?
― winnebago taco, Thursday, 20 May 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I suppose so. I'm also clearly biased, since I'll automatically devour anything associated with Amanda Brown.
Anyway, the NNF website has announced that another Bored Fortress 7" series will be dropped sometime within the next few months. As I missed out on the last few, I could not be more psyched for this.
― rrrr6666, Thursday, 20 May 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)
anyone else pick up the latest batch? this new Umberto is the best thing I've heard from NNF this year.http://www.midheaven.com/products/p/114795/images/6550358212140_main.jpg

ha i was just looking at all the new releases theyve got - really interested in the 'new age outlaws' rerelease
best nnf release ive heard this year is the outer limits recordings lp which manages to walk the pretty/ugly divide really well & still sound p fresh/interesting.
― ======.======= (Lamp), Sunday, 24 October 2010 23:58 (fifteen years ago)
tons of this label's records are "heavily recommended" in the weekly roundups from the aquarius records and volcanic tounge record-shops.
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 25 October 2010 00:00 (fifteen years ago)
that new age outlaws record is beyond naff, could it be any more zeitgeist baiting cringey? look at the fucking cover
― straightola, Monday, 25 October 2010 11:43 (fifteen years ago)
saw wet hair last night & they were amazing. first i'd ever heard them and for some reason i was expecting noize (& they were billed w aids wolf who now only have one guitarist extreme noise terror), so happy when they started playing and it was all groovy organ melodies & cool jams

― meisenfek, Saturday, 30 October 2010 19:59 (fifteen years ago)
yeah this umberto is cool. first track just went from giant squelching psych to creepy squelching disco. totally was not expecting that
― i got her... colostomy bag (samosa gibreel), Saturday, 30 October 2010 20:07 (fifteen years ago)
dig the umberto, but after one listen, it seems like a bit of a step down from the first one. check it if you like the NNF lp.

This thread is almost impossible to search for! ("not" gets stopworded out and there are 5000 threads about fun)
Which of this year's output so far is classic? I've raved about the Peaking Lights album elsewhere, but I haven't heard much else from NNF. And then there's the 100% Silk stuff, about which I know nothing...
Pointers please!
― Can't Stop the Rop (seandalai), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 16:24 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, 936 is great. I'm also a Maria Minerva stan, but I really haven't heard much else from NNF this year.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)
I listened to the Maria Minerva once and it didn't make much of an impression, might check it out again.
Currently listening to the Xander Harris album (lol 90s ephemera)...it's Italo horror pastiche in the vein of Umberto, certainly not bad but hardly essential on first listen.
― Can't Stop the Rop (seandalai), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 16:33 (fourteen years ago)
Reissue of Barn Owl "From Our Mouths A Perpetual Light." Yeah it's a reissue BUT COME ON PEOPLE. Also reissue of early Blues Control tape "Riverboat Styx." Ensemble Economique LP is really good, more on the weird rather than pop end. Dylan Ettinger is either gonna click with you or not, but he is one of the more "definitive" NNF artists right now - definitely worth exploring if you haven't heard anything. The NNF dance 12" sub-label, 100% Silk has been making some interesting moves. Looks like a Rangers 2xLP is on the horizon...stoked for that.
― Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 16:35 (fourteen years ago)
I liked the Ettinger album from last year ok...the Lion of Judah single/EP/??? seemed less interesting.

― pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 16:47 (fourteen years ago)

Amanda Brown's enthusiasm for her own label is incredible, at the 100% Silk showcase I attended she was going positively wild at the front of the crowd while everybody else, even the folk on stage, seemed completely static.
There is so much stuff from this label, it can't all be brilliant surely? And yet, I've enjoyed most of everything I've heard from it.
