Brian Wilson - That Lucky Old Sun

So I just found a used copy today. Obviously first listens aren't real revealing but I REALLY like this. The music seems to be still very rooted in yesteryear but he isn't merely recreating his past here. It's catchy.

Not to mention that his voice sounds better than it did on Smile. the album isnt' as good as Smile, but Brian's voice sounds more confident and he doesn't really "mumble" much. and don't forget dude was 65-ish at the time.

Thoughts?

Yeah, it's super good, especially after the debacles of Gettin' in Over My Head and that Christmas album. Totally out of the blue and amazing.

The only thing I didn't really like much was the narrations, but it's not like they detracted that much. really love "Going Home" and "Can't Wait Too Long"

that little snippet of "Can't Wait Too Long" is the cruelest trick ever. every time I hear it, I have to fight the urge to stop the record and put on the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey twofer so I can listen to the '60s version in its full 5-minute-long, cut 'n' paste glory.

It's nice that a life crash survivor like Brian Wilson is all happy pills and sunny beaches these days, but I wish he'd write some more aching, world-weary goth pieces along the lines of "'Til I Die." "Midnight's Another Day" is sort of like this, and it's probably the most affecting thing on the album afaic.

As said, the album is not as good as "Smile", but this is Brian Wilson's best solo album consisting of newly written material.

picked this up for $3 when circuit city was going out of business. listened to it once. i seem to remember thinking it was okay aside from "mexican girl" which was a little embarrassing.

"Mexican girl" is a bit of an outlier, but I still like it. the other material is far better though.
