Dusty in Memphis Poll

It is all that.

Fun facts:

Final vocals were recorded in New York City.

"All Aretha ever said to me - and I died - we were in a lift, and she put her hand on my arm and went, 'Girrlll!'" (page 5 from Jim Feldman's liners to Rhino's 1999 reissue which adds fourteen largely forgettable bonus tracks)

Dusty's favorite is mine too, "I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore."

"Breakfast In Bed" kills me: the, er, earthiness of the wordplay aside (and did the songwriters know about Dusty's inclinations?), the lyric is so sad: "nothing need be said", so little is demanded of the lover; the narrator is open and giving fully of herself, and while she's trying to convince her lover to return, she knows that her lover "will come again" (also, can be read a couple of ways). And Dusty's vocal is as gentle and open as the lyric.

Wow – just finished Warren Zanes (frustrating) 33 1/3 book.

I voted for "I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore," for the way the oboe darts around her vocal.

btw my edition (1992, I think) has "Willie and Laura Mae Jones" and "What Do You Do When Love Dies," which are just as essential."

Haven't read Zanes' book. What was frustrating about it?

Loved the interviews with Jerry Wexler, but he concentrated on the mythology of the South, about which much has been written. More interesting: the British way of approaching the American South.

'Just One Smile', would've loved to hear a Dusty sings Newman album.

Least fave: "No Easy Way Down" even though I still love it.

Also, the album's brevity (33 minutes) only adds to its greatness for me (easier to obsess on its greatness and all that). I wish more artists would shoot for the half hour range.

I am more surprised by the zero votes for "I Can't It Make Alone." Great tune. Maybe I am biased because I first heard and loved the Maria McKee version.

Surprised by not enough votes, period.
