This topic has been brought up before but I wanna be more specific. I have just been think of how there has always been one really awesome local band in my life - and by local i mean one that i saw their first show and hasn't 'made it' yet. This summer I've been in toronto and have been completely blown away by a band called 'The creeping nobodies'. I can't stop listening to their CD (on kosher rock records). Anyways all i want to do is go to live shows to see local bands that i've never heard of. Obviously, bigger bands are fun to see too because typically some personal hype is involved if you know their songs etc. anyways, do you derive more pleasure from seeing something growing and changing around you or do you preffer to go and see bands full grown that you already know and love?

also, who are these bands? by the way, creeping nobodies are my new favourite band.

It's kind of a slippery slope, actually. While it's great fun to see a local band thrive and gain a wider audience, there's still that precious twang of elitism that dictates that the "newcomer" fans somehow don't deserve to be "in on the secret." And there are few people more boorish than those who claim ad nauseum that they saw ________ (fill in the blank) back when they were still a club act and that people now who buy their albums and go to their shows just don't understand'em because they weren't there from the beginning, maaaaaan.

In my case, I was lucky enough (in my opinion, anyway) to stumble upon one-time local faves Cop Shoot Cop at a relatively early stage in their gradual development, and became a zealous, frothing-at-the-mouth devotee of all things C$C -- following their slow process from their hip status as feted "post-'no wave' guerilla noise unit" into the gaping jaws of the major label, who only saw fit to turn them into some sort've poor man's Nine Inch Nails (without a bondage fixation). Said process eventually caused the band's acrimonious demise. Cop centerpiece Tod [A] jumped ship and formed the considerably more eclectic Firewater, who I've also had the pleasure/malaise to watch develop from being a great secret into a wider success. They too briefly took the apple from the major label serpent, but managed to extricate themselves before the machine broke the band in half (i.e. the A&R guy that picked'em up got fired -- and Universal tried to turn them into the new Smashmouth). Back on an indie now, they still seem to be holding onto their integrity and creative control -- which will serve them well for both die-hards like myself and any new fans that happen to stumble onto them, I hope.

We have good local bands in SF/Oakland, so I can't complain... I like the Cutz, Drunkhorse, The Evening, etc. But we also have Third Eye Blind, who should really be taken out behind the woodshed and dispatched quietly with a small caliber varmint rifle.

Andy, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what do the creeping nobodies sound like? perhaps i'll check them out sometime.

i had the good fortune of seeing the new deal at one of their earliest shows and have only missed a handful of their shows since. i love the new deal crowds perfect they way they are now. they've gown enough to fill a decent sized bar and everyone there is always real into the sets. it's always great.

dyson, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well since your mentioning, The Creeping Nobodies are faboo, but even wierder was they're opening for Damo Sazuki, way too much Fall references, but I rambled on that one before. Sadly I missed that show and I really really wanted to go but was physically drained from a recent physical upheaval of my few material possessions. I still think Im going to suggest to them "Damo Sazuki's Wang" as their next release title but who knows.
Otherwise The Peter Parkers were my favorite. They used to once upon a time do Archer's Of Loaf covers, now its more likely to be a SP3 cover and all their songs are hitting 5 minutes or longer. But yet again I've mentioned them endlessly here. Its my mission that they one day get the recognition they deserve. Them and More Plastic.

Mr Noodles, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the Creeping Nobodies sound like a more melodic version of Partsunknown, which is where two of the nobodies came from (Derek and Eric) and I know other members also play in other bands.
if you like The Fall, the psychedlic side of Husker Du or maybe The Clash you'd like them.

Mr Noodles, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

local faves in nashville include...

lady cop - straight-up, kick ass 80's style hardcore thrash.

new faggot cunts - free noise with a roving membership.

ocelots - a mix of pop, punk, rock, noise, and everything in between.

dave cloud - remember the elvis guy in gummo? that's dave cloud. crazy and rock.

there are plenty of other groups in town. ..so it goes...i think the silver jews are in town...etc...steve earle. ..i should stop there. m.

I live in a city that pines for its golden age. The Minneapolis of the 80's is remembered at one level for Prince and at another for Husker Du and the Replacements. The shadow of their success falls over everything here, a kind of psycho-musical high-jump bar that everyone is waiting, hoping to see reached again. But I didn't grow up here, so what do I know. It's the feeling I get when I go out...maybe it's my feeling. Not that I'm waiting for another 'Mats (the first one was quite enough, thanks) but that there was a time when things here didn't feel secondhand and "pretty good, i guess." Any other Twin Citians, past or present (I know there are a few of you) have anything?

The hip-hop scene here is pretty serious (Atmosphere et al). The Fog, a turntablist-led band in the Radiohead vein, recently got signed to Ninja Tune. Sean Na Na is probably the biggest indierock type thang. Chick-magnet folkie-drawler serioso irritant Mason Jennings is currently on deck in the perennial gonna-make-it-outta- this-city slot. We also cursed the world with Semisonic, sorry.

My favorite act, after Lifter Puller (RIP), is the Plastic Constellations, an emo band (!), but now that they're out of high school (!!) they don't play as much. There's always something to see locally, tho very little to get seriously excited about. Please, prove me wrong. I'm not as deep'n'down a scenester as I'd like to be, I'm sure I'm overlooking something.

ps: I think I've seen the New Faggot Cunts...noise show at a gallery/warehouse here in Minneap. Either that or it was Cock ESP...or Wolf Pups Fuck Like Wolf Pups. The billing was a little off, I've never known. Great, tho, whoever it was.

GCannon, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its great when I go out to see a band that I've never hear before and they blow me away. However I find that its happening less often. Everyone and their mother is in a band and has a CD out now. And since I find that at least 95% of all new bands are either 1. Crap or 2. Need to practice a hell of a lot more before they play out, It increases the time to get a drink factor a lot more than it did in the late 80's.

But the ones to watch from Western Mass :

The Magic Markers- Hot off their 1st cross country US tour. No music lessons for this trio-Shaggs be damned!! The musical equivalent of hanging off the edge of a cliff by your pinkie knowing if ya let go you'll plummet to your death.

Joshua Burkett- Mentioned in Mojo as a folk Psych Nomad?!? He's just a regular really nice guy who helps fill the not so crowded psych- folk section. If you like Tower Recordings, Bert Jansch,Michael Hurley,Tim Buckley this will float your boat.

brg30, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cock esp is likely....they've played many shows here... we get a lot of the freedom from crowd (from the twin cities) down here in town...for a town that prides itself on breeding corporate fed music race horses a la the glamour side of country, there's a decent little crowd of noise enthusiasts here.

If it's a big band I know and love and I can stand in the front row If I don't want to fork a weeks salary then that's great. If I can't I would (usually) prefer a small local up and coming band. (unless they suck)

A Nairn, Saturday, 27 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry, gcannon, I haven't lived here long and don't like doing to shows. I do hope that mason jennings never breaks, though, because whenever I hear him I want to punch him in the face. no, wait, maybe if he does break then he'll get out of my town. hmmm.

Here on Martha's Vineyard, we have a lot of fairly good bands. Does your locale breed good musicians?

Perverts, all of you.

Trying to think of a good OC band that's just started. The fact that I can't should tell you something.

Happy Bastards

Middian
www.myspace.com/middiandoom

and these are just the ones I try to go see! mostly indie rock altho The Ovulators are more glam/Hedwig influenced. Happy Bastards are more classic hardcore/punk, and Middian is crazy complicated sludge metal with an ex-member of Yob. Heavenly Oceans are a great intrumental trio. Going to see Middian tonight!

we have a really good radio station here that plays a lot of local stuff and I think that has really been helping with attendance and general interest.

sleeve (sleeve), Saturday, 3 February 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

I heard that Middian show was great. I work with Mike, and he's a helluva nice guy on top of being a great musician. The upcoming Middian album is going to be amazing.

vartman (novaheat), Sunday, 11 February 2007 07:29 (eighteen years ago)

I'd add that if you're in Eugene (which you seem to be, sleeve), you should try to see Avoid the Future Shadow. They're on the heavier end of the post-rock spectrum, I guess you could say... though maybe a bit more atmospheric at this point than they were a few years back, due to lineup changes (they lost their bassist and drummer, and added keyboards).

Alas, they don't play too often anymore except for occasional appearances at various events at the DIVA downtown, although I'd be on the lookout for an upcoming show at the Samurai Duck... Definitely a band worth keeping an eye out for.

seven years pass...

Is there another thread for local music appreciation or is this the only one? Should have more posts!

Living in a city with great local bands (and labels) makes me feel pretty fortunate. I know that in today's bandcamp age it's kinda hard to tell what is a local band and what isn't, but things are definitely changing and I don't notice any kind of lesser-than attitude from the audience perspective so is that even there anymore? Is there a stigma to being in a local band? Honest q because I live in a big city and remember the hometown local bands of my youth always being considered 2nd rate (if that) for whatever reason. It always seemed like bs to me even back then, but there were some hilarious local big shots who never failed to use their name recognition to bag my friends, so that makes them seem kinda lame in retrospect.

I dunno. Talk about local bands, please. Your favorites, what it's like to be in one then or now, whatever.
