tbh w/ you this is actually hitting me kind of hard -- gang starr was the only rap group i owned that many albums of (all of them) & relistening to this stuff now i cant believe how well i remember all these words -- there was a period where hard to earn was basically the only record i was listening to, at all

can't say I've ever heard the first album. kinda weird that The Ownerz is the first Gang Starr album I ever had, but it came out at the time I was first getting into them and I worked backwards from there

oh shit I forgot "Code of the Streets", that needs to be in my list

thats bcuz its really hard dude!!

anyway

1. royalty -- one of the best premier beats ever, that looping sample is dope & kci & jojo over premier is this awesome clash that i cant explain, plus some of guru's most emotionally affirming moments -- he was always super good @ being motivational -- that part about from the street corners to the library you're royalty, w/ that chorus about being nothing less than the best, but somehow it never sounds cheesy at all, real difficult trick to pull off -- nice career capstone kinda jam

2. mass appeal -- first gang starr track i ever heard on the radio before i knew what gang starr was, its so many ppl's fav track for a reason, premo making musical samples sound like found-sounds, this track just sounds like rattling el trains & beepers, & guru fits the vibe perfectly -- some beats were just made for the laid back drawl

3. soliloquy of chaos -- great concept for a song, the word 'soliloquy' as an understated way to describe the way dumbasses ruin parties by being violent & disrupting everyone else's lives in the area, performed perfectly

4. the planet -- i love the way this captures a kind of portrait-of-the-artist-as-a-young-man vibe. im gonna make it god dammit. out in b r double o k lyn the planet.

5. take it personal -- on a beat nerd type, wasnt this one of premo's earliest points where he started chopping up samples? ive heard everyone kinda went nuts when they heard how he flipped 'skull snaps.' (gonna cheat & mention 'i'm the man' here cuz premo's beat under jeru's part has some crazy-for-the-era triggered sample shit as well)

6. take two and pass -- sleeper album track, this is front-to-back perfect.
