well, more the year prior

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:43 (fifteen years ago)

I am not voting for him but props 2 shaq b/c "biological didn't bother" sounds like a retarded convoluted display name I would use

I went to your blog and I didn't feel anything (Curt1s Stephens), Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:27 (fifteen years ago)

voted black moon, barely beating out the scarface

in movie 2001 resurrect thread on planet jupiter (Pillbox), Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:35 (fifteen years ago)

oh shit...this one has the first ever rap song i remember being completely obsessed with - "none of your business" - SO, YO, SO YO HO, CHECK IT ON A RECORD BUTT NAKED - PEP'S ASS GETS RESPECTED - and the one i'm obsessed with right now because the dj in the bar last weekend played it twice in a row and it was an amazing moment - "juicy" - birthdays were the worst days but now we sip champagne when we thirsty. and also "thuggish ruggish bone" and "afro puffs"! aargh

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:48 (fifteen years ago)

bop gun is dope

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Friday, 23 April 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, it took less than a split second to decide "juicy" but holy fuck what a bunch of songs.

imma sb (samosa gibreel), Friday, 23 April 2010 01:31 (fifteen years ago)

^my reaction exactly

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blinky_Blink (The Reverend), Friday, 23 April 2010 02:44 (fifteen years ago)

I may be the only vote but I'm voting for Lady of Rage, "Afro Puffz". the beat was sick, and she had charisma. it's a shame her solo album had to drop when Death Row had become an afterthought of a label, to very little reception.

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Friday, 23 April 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

damn even the Heavy D track ("Black Coffee") was a banger

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Friday, 23 April 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

haha

i have a tape kicking around somewhere from when i was like 11 that has 'funkdafied' 'black coffee' 'sweet potato pie' (notoriously absent on this list) 'bop gun' 'whats my name' by snoop 'back in the day' by ahmad and 'passin me by' by the pharcyde -- many of them cut short bcuz i could only manage to tape the last 1:30 of a song or something

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Friday, 23 April 2010 03:24 (fifteen years ago)

oh man, Sweet Potato Pie. I got that Domino album used for five bucks, it's actually pretty good even if I don't play it a lot....

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Friday, 23 April 2010 03:33 (fifteen years ago)

If it was "Flava In Ya Ear (Remix)" .. no contest.

But it's not, so... "Heaven And Hell."

billstevejim, Friday, 23 April 2010 03:40 (fifteen years ago)

wow. just. wow.

i can't even really pick.

m@tt (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 23 April 2010 03:54 (fifteen years ago)

Well, let's make it easier and rule out the few songs we can.

69 Boyz -- "Tootsee Roll" and "Kitty Kitty" are obviously out ....as is Shaq's Biological Didn't Bother...hmm that still leaves a lot

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Friday, 23 April 2010 03:56 (fifteen years ago)

I was sure i'd vote "Tootsee Roll" til I saw "LUCAS WIT DA LID OFF" omg so good

piping hot dish and a cup of chat (Stevie D), Friday, 23 April 2010 03:58 (fifteen years ago)

Lucas with the Lid Off....GAWD, memories. I remember seeing that video for the first time (mind you, not even being a fan of rap) and thinking it was unique and cool.

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Friday, 23 April 2010 03:59 (fifteen years ago)

man "black superman" by above the law, i ain't thought of that in a long time

if lucas with the fuckin' lid off wins this poll i will go postal

m@tt (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 23 April 2010 03:59 (fifteen years ago)

xpost for some reason I barely remember "Funkdafied" other than the fact that it ruled the rap charts, but I remember "Fa Alla Y'all" vividly....likewise I don't know that Rappin 4-Tay song, but I did know "I'll Be Around"....

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Friday, 23 April 2010 04:01 (fifteen years ago)

dude players club oh man sooo fuckin smooth

chop up some game right here:

m@tt (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 23 April 2010 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

huh is that JT tha Bigga Figga running the board on screen in the first chorus? i wonder if he produced that....

m@tt (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 23 April 2010 04:05 (fifteen years ago)

I love 4-Tay, but everytime I see one of his videos I keep thinking he's an extra in Boyz in the Hood....sweet track though. Sorry I missed it in '94.

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Friday, 23 April 2010 04:08 (fifteen years ago)

nothing to be sorry about i just thought it was a good song if peeps hadn't heard it :)

m@tt (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 23 April 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

well I mean I'm sorry I missed it at the time considering what crap I DID listen to :)

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Friday, 23 April 2010 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

I mean really, my memories of a lot of these songs are tainted because I wasn't allowed to have explicit label albums so i heard the clean radio versions, which were essentially completely diff. songs!

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Friday, 23 April 2010 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

playaz club is super classic -- recently copped the 12"

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Friday, 23 April 2010 04:19 (fifteen years ago)

Gone but not forgotten....

Sagat -- "Funk Dat"

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Friday, 23 April 2010 04:22 (fifteen years ago)

also remembering...

Hammer--'Pumps and a Bump'
Coolio--'I Remember'

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Friday, 23 April 2010 04:29 (fifteen years ago)

Totally amazed "Lucas with the Lid Off" made the rap charts, because the only place I ever heard it was at Sunday Night Dance Party at First Avenue, sandwiched with the likes of Soul Coughing.

Great list--Rodney, did you just happen upon this or are you planning a series of these?

Please Do Not Swagga Jack Me (Matos W.K.), Friday, 23 April 2010 04:31 (fifteen years ago)

Just saying: KEITH MURRAY GOD DAMN IT.

T Bone Streep (Cave17Matt), Friday, 23 April 2010 04:47 (fifteen years ago)

yeah "Lucas" seem liked so much more an MTV/alt rock audience thing than a rap hit, although i guess i shouldn't be surprised to see it here

some dude, Friday, 23 April 2010 05:06 (fifteen years ago)

Matos: This is already the second of these polls: Billboard Hot Rap Singles for the week ending Jan. 13, 1996

They have random issues of Billboard (about 1 a month maybe) on Google Books.

During the mid-90s, Coolio was my favorite rapper. "Fantastic Voyage" was the perfect school bus jam.

Going to vote for the Craig Mack, but I used to really love "This DJ".

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 23 April 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

disappointed at the lack of love for "none of your business"

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 23 April 2010 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

One of my favorite college stories involves a friend who was volunteering for an afterschool program in Dorchester; she was driving the kids (ages 8-12) home and a bunch of them were in the back of the van shouting a really terrible, dirty song. My friend was all, "What are you SINGING back there???" and one of the kinds answered "'None Of Your Business'!", to which my friend responded "GET OUT OF MY VAN! YOU WILL NOT TALK TO ME THAT WAY!"

Later she heard the Salt 'n Pepa song in question and was massively embarrassed.

HI DERE, Friday, 23 April 2010 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

btw "None of Your Business" rules

HI DERE, Friday, 23 April 2010 18:09 (fifteen years ago)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 23 April 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

oh shit 'this dj' was on that tape i had too

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Saturday, 24 April 2010 00:37 (fifteen years ago)

I still pull out Warren G's "Regulate" now and then. There's filler on it to be sure but "This DJ" and "Can You See?", as well as a few of the non-single tracks are fairly solid.

Bogart Puff 'n Stuff (Cattle Grind), Saturday, 24 April 2010 00:43 (fifteen years ago)

i liked 'this dj' more than 'regulate' at the time tbh. always found it funny that dude hops on a schwinn when that was the kind of bike mom had -- lol warren g uses an old ppl bike

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Saturday, 24 April 2010 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

I like how Ice Cube is like "man I don't know, your parties can get pretty wild.." but then the party in the video just looks like every other rap video ever made...
