I'll second the Nitty Gritty album for the top spot; but the top 10 has to include the GBV Director's Cut of Bee Thousand.

Wasn't even aware of their being such a concept outside of Greatest Hits/compilation releases.

Even though Oneida's triple album Rated O just came out last year and most triple albums have already had some time to marinate I'm ready to claim Rated O as my favorite.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 22 April 2010 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

I'm torn between Lotus and Yessongs. Oh, wait, ELP's Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends was a triple, too. Decisions, decisions...

Nice to see praise for the Dirt Band album, that's a great one.

My own personal favorite may be:

Rated O is definitely up there. really solid album

Sun City Girls 'Dante's Disneyland Inferno' and '330,003 Crossdressers' are among their best work and are triple LP sets both.

I listen to my favorite cuts from Sandinista! more, but Will the Circle Be Unbroken is the only triple album I've heard where every cut earns its place. Nothing feels bloated, and its scope feels genuinely magisterial.

I have always been curious about something - does anybody actually like "Apple Jam" off All Things Must Pass? I'm usually inclined to think of that as two disc album since the third disc seems like a throwaway.

ATMP can't be great if you dismiss an entire side.

does anybody actually like "Apple Jam" off All Things Must Pass?

pfft don't listen to Alfred re: George Harrison (or Dennis Wilson!) I like a good deal of the Apple Jam side, particularly Side 6 ("Thanks for the Pepperoni"/"Out of the Blue") which approaches Can/krautrock levels of jammy awesomeness imho. Side 5 is the weaker one but It's Johnny's Birthday is a good little laugh, and even "I Remember Jeep" has enough endearing Arp squiggles to keep me interested.

Was looking through http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_triple_albums - mostly compilations (and Grateful Dead bootlegs) it seems. I'm sure there's loads of great stuff missing off that list, but for now, I'm voting for the unicorn.

If comps count from that list count, then I'd like to change my answer to Prince's The Hits/B Sides.

re: "Apple Jam", this was the only volume I had off "All things", bought in a jumble sale for 3p.

When I eventually got the CD box version, it was the only track(s) I liked...

I know, I have to try again with this set, and it's been in my car ever since, one day I'll actually put it on.

That's no way to talk about Frank Zappa.

well, technically it was Zappa's mustache next to the vagina in the collage

Asstral Cheeks (latebloomer), Saturday, 24 April 2010 10:27 (fifteen years ago)

Just release your album on vinyl first, then it's much easier to have a triple album.
