The Hold Steady, Gaslight Anthem, Titus Andronicus -- other examples? What is this genre called? So awesome. (Forgive if already a thread like this.)

xxp i should've included all the disclaimers h00s did on the other thread. 'not arguing about class,' etc.
― Mordy, Friday, 23 April 2010 17:14 (fifteen years ago)
scott, looks amazing. checking it out now.
Lots of stuff happened between Bruce and Hold Steady et. al., though; gets talked about pretty often on the Rolling Past Expiry Hard Rock thread. Here too:
What is John (Cougar) Mellancamp's best song?
And not American, but related:

here's what i wrote about arlyn once:
Arlyn Gale – Back To The Midwest Night (ABC – 1978) What the fuck? How come you major dudes never told me about this guy? Complete missing link between Phil Lynott and Craig Finn. Springsteen wannabe? Yeah, so what? I’ve already HEARD all HIS songs. I dig this mightily. Cool band. Long rambling rock and R&B excursions tied together by Arlyn’s slick yawp. Check it: "I crashed on that crowd like my soul had a debt to pay/So those Hollywood kids braced up for a one man invasion/I pleaded hard wired blues, turned it all into cannon-blasted energy/I strut a mad man's fandango, reeled 'round that axis and rode out the night". Or this: "Indiscreet, bittersweet/It's her deal, give her the wheel/She’s in the driver’s seat/Dutchess of Earl, Mother of Pearl/She’s leaning on the off beat/Nylon hose, crossed-leg pose/So inviting, delighting/Got me reciting prose/Hypnotic, narcotic/A shape so melodic/I wanna know how it goes”. I know what you’re thinking, he's no Tonio K, but still...Cover shot: Arlyn standing in front of his ride at sunset. The headlights are blazing. The bridge behind him stands mute.

How come you major dudes never told me about this guy?
Willy Nile, Carolyn Mas, Carla Ollson, etc probably used to scratch their heads overs the same question.

Anyway, I have no use for them, but don't some people think Arcade Fire fit in this category too? (I'd say some stuff by Drive-By Truckers and Dropkick Murphys comes closer class-wise, but I wouldn't swear to their post-Bruceness.)
― xhuxk, Friday, 23 April 2010 17:33 (fifteen years ago)
Love Dropkick Murphys + Flogging Molly, but yeah, don't see a huge lineage between them and Bruce. I remember Arcade Fire (and the Killers around second album!) got a lot of Bruce comparisons, but I never really heard it explicitly enough (or maybe I did, but it wasn't what was interesting about the music that I wanted to keep hearing it). How about Green Day's last two albums?

I thought we were supposed to post pics of boss American shades that somehow reflected American working class rock music. Like:

When you use the "post" prefix you may ruling out Carla Olson, who is closer to a Springsteen comtemporary - but that's a small matter.
I think Against Me might qualify. Also you might wanna consider Lucero & Son Volt.
― ImprovSpirit, Friday, 23 April 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)
Lots of explicitly post-Bruce working class rock in Nashville these days too, btw, but I'm not sure whether you're interested in that or not. (If you are, you might want to start with the first Eric Church album, and work from there.)

Ok, having trouble finding that Arlyn Gale album (can't even hear samples of it on iTunes). :(
