Thread for Usher's "OMG"

it's the new single "omg" ft/prod by will.i.am

it sounds like an outtake from the E.N.D. which i'm totally okay with, cuz those were pretty good pop songs

i def respect will as one of the few avant garde pop stars that are around right now -- kinda felt that way ever since i grasped "boom boom pow" as a weird & risky world-conquering banger as opposed to some weird ass song

"omg" is all over the place stylistically and still is hooky -- usher kind of blends in with the FUTURE SPACE FUTURO the e.n.d.-style production and in turn comes off as agreeable & not out of place, as opposed to shit like "daddy's home" & "little freak" which are creepy and cringeworthy

I hated "Yeah" forever and always but this breed of maximalism in an Usher song I decided I was okay with - the chanting or whatever in the background, I mean, and all those hissy and breathy sounds. And starts slow and goes fast and slows down again and makes it all smooth.

I like the way he doesn't show off; he sings in some fake this-is-my-everyday-voice voice like the Shangri-las, but because it's Usher he reminds you that he can not give a damn and still sound [fab].

Then there's that trick I don't know if I have ever gotten tired of where the noise in the song goes quiet so you can hear everything (esp. so you can hear nothing in between everything). And I liked most of all that the house beat functions as a bass line, or the bass line is disguised behind the house beat, and it doesn't sound like subsonic mud the way a lot of hiphouse beats have. Maybe I just don't like house, but probably that isn't it.

Does he only say "Oh my gosh" at the end? I kept hearing "oh my god" until the last line, but Internet lyrics disagree. If the Internet is wrong, why that "gosh" at the end?

(everything I know about "OMG" to date)

not gonna lie, I keep expecting Fergie to come in at some point

HI DERE, Friday, 23 April 2010 18:27 (fifteen years ago)

Which is a good thing, right?

Have you guys heard that Toby Kieth "I Love This Bar" song? It's pretty good, but you think it's run out of tricks when it does that same Gary Glitter soccer stadium chant thing, except country style. I heard someone else do this - maybe it's going the rounds. Chanting and shit.

If you like "OMG" and hate "Yeah!", we are very different people.

That's true, Rev!

If you like "OMG" and hate "Yeah!", we are very different people. you need to replace your ears.

Results 1 - 10 of about 15,900 for "Ear store". (0.23 seconds)

yo gotti or notti (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 April 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

I tend to disagree with almost every one of lex pretend's opinions.

bamcquern, Friday, 23 April 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

then you definitely need to replace your ears. hurry!

Making fun of people isn't your forte! There are ilxors you can look up to, whose good example can help.

bamcquern, Friday, 23 April 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

I literally do not have enough face to palm.

HI DERE, Friday, 23 April 2010 18:49 (fifteen years ago)

What? That's not a zing. I don't really care to zing people. But I think other people are much better than this guy at mocking someone else and that he maybe should be more cautious about it.

bamcquern, Friday, 23 April 2010 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

Like, you are not much of a zinger, Dan, but you can get to me emotionally. But lex's comment has a weird bully in a teen comedy vibe that's easy to dismiss.

bamcquern, Friday, 23 April 2010 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

That was more about how instructing someone to become better at the art of making fun of people is likely not going to be a constructive way of generating the conversation you wanted to have on this thread.

HI DERE, Friday, 23 April 2010 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

Oh. It would be fine if there were conversation on this thread about that song, but I never had high hopes for it in the first place. Not so attached to threads I start.

bamcquern, Friday, 23 April 2010 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

I would be more impressed with this trick if the first things out of Usher's mouth the very first second we can hear him properly is "Honey got a booty like pow pow pow/Honey got some boobies like wow oh wow."

this is like exactly the thread this song deserved.

xxp I didn't really mean that at the time. I'd only heard the song 1.5 times, and now I've heard it .25 to .5 times for four or five more times. It's wearying, like feeding 2 cats 4 snacks a day plus their 2 meals and the 1 cat's 2 pills and then cleaning at least 10 little dishes a day and filling up the 2 water bowls about 3 times a day and the little milk bowl also three times a day, making at least 9 bowl rinses and 9 bowl fills.

almost liked this song til i heard that line

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

those cats sure do drink a lot of water. Funny, I liked the song AS SOON as I heard that line. I have heard the song countless times now it has reached change the channel status. Now I'm into "There Goes My Baby." Usher has a thing with the word "poke"

is this the first top 40 hit to use the word 'boobies'? i feel like we've reached a milestone as a culture, like when they started saying 'ass' on TV

peacocks, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

one month passes...

Lyrics are incredibly inane but heard this one last night in a club and found myself very excited... dancing and fist pumping to it, granted I was drunk... but I dunno... William's production is the highlight here, the 'oooh ooh' backing chorus is very catchy. Usher doesn't seem to add any personality or anything remotely meaningful to the song... could be a Black Eyed Peas song for all I care.

this song would've been better if it was a straight will song, but it's still prob the best US #1 of the year

Tim F, Sunday, 22 August 2010 07:58 (fifteen years ago)

which US #1 is better? katy perry? i guess i forgot about "rude boy" -- unless i'm forgetting something else, i think "omg" is a solid #2

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 08:00 (fifteen years ago)

i just ranked them on rolling pop

I would gladly commission Usher to write an ILX theme song titled "GTFO"

something about this song makes me feel like its already a timeless classic to be replayed on radio forever

i dont even love it like that -- it just sounds like a 'timeless classic' should sound. like i heard that melody 20 yrs ago

that makes a certain kind of sense in that this song is as garish and embarrassing as most of the pop hits circa 1990

Ready For The World had that hit in '86. And then re-done by Inoj in '97.
