i just don't understand WHY. WHY would he make a whole new thing to release music that sounds just like nin. is it because he wanted a female vocalist, and didn't want to do that as nin?
i'm listening to it right now: this sigh thing she does, around 5 minutes, and the piano, holy smokes, both sound exactly like a nine inch nails song. this whole thing sounds exactly like a fucking outtake from with teeth.

it's lame that trent (probably) won't be doing the whole give-his-music-away-for-free thing with this band. there aren't any legal free downloads for this single, are there? you have to buy it. lame!

...although, if you listen closely, it sounds like there was some engineer drinking a milkshake in the studio during the time of the recording. You can hear that slurping straw sound in the right channel periodically through the track.

I haven't heard Coil influence in NIN since or before they remixed him (aside from maybe my favorite dreams are nightmares). I'm a fan of both acts but it does Coil's brilliance a pretty massive injustice to compare them to NIN just b/c Trent's a fan and rips a band name from an early Coil track.

I'd say HTDA owes more to the Sneaker Pimps than Coil, but whatever.

Sorry for the radio silence lately... I've been busy! There's a number of things to be revealed over the coming months. Some you may expect, others you may not. Patience, my friends.

Today's news is about my band How To Destroy Angels. I'm happy to announce we've formally partnered with Columbia Records for our next series of releases. The first of these will be available in November and it's called An Omen EP. As you may have guessed, it's an EP. It contains six songs, some of which are from our full-length LP which is coming early next year.
We are making some videos, we are going to be performing live, and that's all the details I have for now on those matters.

Regarding our decision to sign with Columbia, we've really spent a long time thinking about things and it makes sense for a lot of reasons, including a chance to work with our old friend Mark Williams. There's a much more granular and rambling answer I could give (and likely will in an interview someplace) but it really comes down to us experimenting and trying new things to see what best serves our needs. Complete independent releasing has its great points but also comes with shortcomings.

We are all very excited about you checking out the new stuff. Wish I could tell you more, but you know how this works... it would take all the fun out of it!

There's only a couple of things that weren't used, actually; I'll have to go back and review the transcript. Anyway, thanks! I have to say that getting compliments from him for interesting questions was a nice charge.

And it turns out the New Yorker has a big piece about him up and there's more about that Beats by Dre thing, borrowing from the Pitchfork summary:

He's helping to design a new music-streaming service, which is currently being called Daisy, and is set to launch early next year.

The service "uses mathematics to offer suggestions to the listener... [but also] would present choices based partly on suggestions made by connoisseurs, making it a platform in which the machine and the human would collide more intimately."

I was a bit underwhelmed by the EP so I'm hesitant to pursue this any further.

I am digging the EP in much the same way I dug the Doubting Thomas album

They've gotten steadily better, it seems to me, but not a whole lot better. The first EP was wan and disappointing; the second EP was slightly less so, with one really great song ("Ice Age"); the full-length repeats "Ice Age" and a few more tracks from the second EP, and is, again, a little better than its predecessors. But none of what HTDA has done to date is as good as, say, The Slip.

This is pretty good, even if it is essentially trip hop. Maybe Sneaker Pimps, actually kind of reminds me of a slightly gloomier Garbage.
