Help me identify these Vitalic tracks

As I've given up on finding the Poney EP anywhere (if anyone knows where I can pick it up in London please let me know!), I've tried downloading it. But, *shock horror!* I think the tracks have been misnamed - I currently have 3 out of 4 of them:

La Rock 01 - Or La Rock 01 according to the Soulwax album anyway, the file I have is labelled Poney Pt 1. Is the track on 2 Many DJs really La Rock 01?

La Rock 01 - This one is the tune actually labelled La Rock 01 - 4/4 beat, funky bassline, then some high synth noises and a wheezy robotic voice that comes in at about 2:50. What is it?

And the third one, which is labelled Poney Pt 2 is (I think) You Prefer Cocaine... well, it goes "cocaine, dance like a machine" at any rate.

I am now utterly confuzzled and waiting to be led out of my ignorance.

Matt DC, Sunday, 28 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All Virgin Megastores in Yorkshire seem to be overflowing with copies, I got mine in York one. Which is of very little use to yourself, I realise. The La Rock 01: 4/4 beat, funky bassline, high synth noises one that you describe is Poney Pt.1, the "cocaine, dance like a machine" one is You Prefer Cocaine, am unsure which the Soulwax album one is. You smell reeeeeal good.

alex linsdell, Sunday, 28 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's confusing innit. I have had the same problem with La Rock being labeled Poney part 1. All I know is that La Rock is the track that makes you go "GODDAMN!!": beat not too in your face and then after a while that riff. As featured on the Soulwax album and Miss Kittin On The Road mix-cd.

Aaargh to make things worse: You Prefer Cocaine as downloaded is named Poney Part 1 on American Gigolo , yet You Prefer Cocaine on American Gigolo when downloaded is named the Felix Da Housecat remix of said track (that is, the one that goes "Cocaine. Dance like a machine." (genius btw).

Omar, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha I do know You Prefer Cocaine!

The song on Soulwax, whatever it is, is the most fucking amazing techno song I've heard in years. Dave Angel played it ages ago and practically froze the dancefloor in shock.

four weeks pass...
Right, here's my attempt at sorting out the 'Poney' E.P. tracklisting confusion.

4 tracks.

1. Poney Pt.1 - This the one Matt DC identified as having a 'wheezy robotic voice' come in at about the 2:50 mark, this is my second favourite track.

2. Poney Pt.2 - This track has a funny voice come in at 0:50, then at about 2:02 the track breaks down and a wonderful melody comes in, the voice returns at 3:42. My favourite track.

3. La Rock 01 - This is the one that's on the Soulwax mix an is probably the most famous track. It just builds and builds. Not my favourite as it lacks the wonderful melodies of the other tracks but I guess it's the track that works best on the danceflor.

4. You Prefer Cocaine - The easiest to indentify since the vocal clearly say ' Dance like A Machine'. Again at 2:26 the chords change and we get another wonderful synth melody, great stuff.

Problem is, how are Vitalic ever gonna top this? One of the best E.P.s ever released.

two weeks pass...
if u really know vitalic, and dont how he/they (whoever) should top this ... u ever heard the vitalic remix of "demon vs. heartbreaker - You Are My High"??
with the vitalic remix of "Lady B feat. Samantha Nice - Swany" and "la rock" very close, THIS is my new super-over-famous track of vitalic!. this is UNBEATABLE by even the topmost superstar djs i know this far.. and imho could only be toped by the "master himself" :)

that guy(s?) just rock

(i really would like to see vitalic live in an middle-sized club feat. superior light/SFX [not superior in mass, but in scene-tech-quality, if u know?)

TranceaverMX400, Monday, 16 September 2002 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually found that "You Are My High" remix pretty average...does anyone know if the Poney EP will be released on CD?

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Monday, 16 September 2002 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Phil Nicholson is right according to me .
Anybody ever heard the collaboration of Vitalic and Al Ferox with the song Absolut ?!!!! first time i heard it i was on E (Sven Vath @ Beach Rock) and i can tell you my head was a fucking bomb ready to explode . never ever ever ever ever ever happened to me

MJfloppy, Friday, 27 September 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

ALL OF YOU, DOWNLOAD VITALIC LIVE AT FUSE AND BASK IN THE GLORY OF IT ALL.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 27 September 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i found another funky track in the web by vitalic. title=ghost train
That would be the Vitalic remix of Manu Le Malin "Ghost Train"

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Friday, 27 September 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i found out that vitalic also produces tracks under the synonym "STERIL".

MJfloppy, Thursday, 10 October 2002 09:01 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
that's not right. latex = steril

Gizmo, Friday, 22 November 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

what? I've had all these tracks under different names! AACK!

For me, according to Phil N,

Poney I was La Rock 01 and vice versa
Poney II was You Prefer Cocaine

and I've got Everything is OK which is good too.

According to Phil, I like Poney II best. What's so good about La Rock 01 though? DEf not my fave.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 22 November 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
I may even show him this thread later, so no scurrilous comments please!

That is inviting trouble, but not from me. Many congratulations Archel + Matt.

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 2 January 2003 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

erm, not only wrong thread, but wrong group entirely.

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 2 January 2003 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't heard the Soulwax thing yet (OH NO!), so to make things fully clear for me, is "La Rock 01" the song that sounds sort of like a Kawasaki superbike accelerating?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 4 January 2003 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

They all sound like that.

Siegbran (eofor), Saturday, 4 January 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

as i understood it, La roCk and Poney part 1 were one and the same, and yes its the one that sounds as Nate describes it - it has that noitceable pitch bend in the sound and a crescendo effect

and the one i have as 'Poney part 2' is the one that starts with an electro-type beat (not 4/4) and reminds me a bit of Daft Punk's 'Superheroes' - neither of these have vocals tho so i'm even more confused now

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 4 January 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Just noticed this. Like dog latin, I have them the other way around to the way phil describes. This is bothering me now. If the no-robot voice one is actually 'Poney pt.1' and not 'La Rock 01' then I guess I'll change them. The track timings at discogs.com suggest Phil is right, in that the 2:50 robot voice one is a bit longer, though my timings don't quite match (my mp3s being 5:28 and 5:36).

I don't understand how stevem can say they are one and the same.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 October 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The insane banging one is La Rock 01. The not quite but almost as insane hard eletro one is Poney Pt 1. The "Cocaine, dance like a machine" one is You Prefer Cocaine. I confirmed this on the decks at the local record store just the other day.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 18 October 2004 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Arrgh - by 'no-robot' I meant 'robot'. So Phil was right. OK, I've changed them. Thank you.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 18 October 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

On Saturday I was at a none-more-schmindie club and at about 3am the DJ appeared to either take an admirable risk or go mad, and played Alter Ego's Rocker mixed into La Rock 01. Predictably, I went absolutely fucking mental. Somewhat less predictably, so did everyone else.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

where was that?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, so I had Poney Pt. 1 mislabeled as "La Rock" like a lot of people... and it seems that the more uptempo one with the pitch shifting bassline that goes into overdrive is actually La Rock, am I right?
So, why is it that every copy of that one that I find online is titled "Darkwave" and just stops suddenly at 4:17? I just figured it must have been off of a cd on which it just mixed into a following track that I didn't have, but now I'm not so sure. Also, why have I found a track titled "Le Rock" that's about 3 minutes long and features the same riff as what I figure is *La* Rock but never kicks into overdrive.
Filesharing is soo confusing for me, at times.
And I guess this means I've still never heard Poney Pt. 2, which I've gotta find.

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"that one" = pitchshifting bassline, presumed to be La Rock 01

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

and I've got something else identified as "Ghost Train Remix" that features a different pitch shifting bassline, but similar percussion as La Rock 01????

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

If I'm reading this right, La Rock 01 is the only one without vocals.

The "Cocaine, dance like a machine" one is You Prefer Cocaine.

Wait, I thought that was Poney Pt 2.

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It looks like whoever tagged the mp3s I got accidentally switched sides A and B of the vinyl.

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It looks like the Poney EP has been pretty badly mp3-tagged on all fronts.

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Monday, 18 October 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

GABBA/AMP I'M LOOKING AT YOU

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is right:

Poney Part 1 = about 5'28' long, portentous high-pitched synth riff, incomprehensible treated vocals (something about "thought it was reality, but it was just a nightmare), vocals start about 2'50".

Poney Part 2 = about 5'54" long, quite a bit slower than Part 1, arpeggiated bassline, vocals similar to Part 1 but they kick in in the first minute.

You Prefer Cocaine = about 5'43", about the same tempo as Poney Part 2, arpeggiated bassline, synth effect that sounds a bit like crickets chirping, vocals = "you prefer cocaine, dance like a machine".

La Rock 01 = about 5'33", absolutely mental, you know it if you've heard it.

Angus Gordon (angusg), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

So what I've now realized is that I'm missing a full version of La Rock 01 (I've got various other mixes/corrupt versions) and haven't heard Poney Part 2.

Now I will find these.

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Angus is correct.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The trouble is that Gigolo don't write "A" and "B" on their vinyl so you don't actually know which side is which when looking at the EP (the track listing is on one side only). I only worked it out through a process of elimination cos it's obvious which one is "you prefer cocaine" and cos Poney 1 and 2 have more in common with one another than with the other two tracks...

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Looking at the etchings for "A" and "B" normally works. Faultlessly.

___ (___), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Assuming you have good lighting.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the idea that there's been two and a half years of confusion due to bad lighting!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Also of course some of the tracks appear on compilations/mixes etc (eg "La Rock" on Radio Soulwax Part 2). Although God knows it's common enough to see tracks mislabelled on compilations too!

Angus Gordon (angusg), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

if you got the record just remember:
words side: poneys 1 and 2
ahnold side: you prefer cocaine, la rock 01

and i listened closely (perhaps for the first time ever) to the words on poney, and i got "working at the fun fare." so is it really about, as i read somewhere, a pony who escapes a circus or something? strange.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe it is actually "working at Fine Fare." He is relating the story of how, as a young robot, he used to work there on the till, and was annoyed when someone tried to pay for some crisps with a £25 note, and how it was ridiculous because not only was he short of change, but there are no £25 notes, so it was obviously a forgery.
