what the shit geir

I mean this is like the most common recording technique ever

Double tracking is common, but most of those acts who are particularly famous for their vocal harmonies have had at least 2-3 voices in the band who were able to sing good enough. For instance, Hollies and 10cc would not be on the list here.

Billy Corgan caws, though.

Marvin Gaye. He had a mic in the control room so that he could sing into it when he was sitting at the board.

Blecch Generation (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 29 April 2010 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

Mary Ford was the first pop singer to do this, as far as I'm aware.

Anybody putting the name "Ian Brown" next to the word "harmony" shd probably get their ears syringed.

Sub/Doms Whipping Here (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 29 April 2010 06:18 (fifteen years ago)

I think every living musician has tried to use this trick at least once.

Chan Marshall comes to my mind immediatly idkw... she seems to use it on every song... never been sure if it's actually her or a backing singer though.

Moka, Thursday, 29 April 2010 07:38 (fifteen years ago)

She never lists a backing singer in the album credits, does she?

Moka, Thursday, 29 April 2010 07:41 (fifteen years ago)

George Fucking Harrison and the George O'Hara Smith Singers ffs.

Uh, but Brian Wilson is? That's Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys...

Football's Flocking Home (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 April 2010 10:16 (fifteen years ago)

When I say Brian Wilson I mean Brian Wilson as a solo act, although there are a few Beach Boys tracks where he did most of the vocals himself too.

2-track stereo recording was invented in 1943 Geir

why am I even bothering...

the sound of a norwegian guy being wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 30 April 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

Is Dan's point that the singer is hearing one note but singing another?

Blecch Generation (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 30 April 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

My point was that practically everyone who has recorded a popular song with any sort of harmony on it in the past 30 years who has not been part of a group with multiple singers has sung their own harmony parts at least once, only seasoned liberally with exasperated hyperbole.

Yours is more interesting though, so I'm changing it to that.

Bruce Springsteen.

true story: three tenors was actually just pavarotti singing over two tracks of his own voice, but 'the tenor' would not have been as commercially viable, so thyey brought in a couple of mimes to fill out the group

those are some fat mimes

the sound of a norwegian guy being wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 30 April 2010 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

you pay 4 mimes by the pound, so they were v good

For some reason, I keep reading this thread as "Singers Who Frequently Annoy Themselves." Sure hope the lead singer of Hinder is one of them.
