LOL Depeche Mode is a mad to claim. :)
Suede at least should have been allowed to release their best album, which was the third. Might have called it quits after that...
― Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 29 April 2010 09:53 (fifteen years ago)
is a mad claim, I mean.
Noodle Vague OTM about Radiohead, but the suggestion is almost as controversial as if I would have mentioned Talk Talk. :)

"A Broken Frame" is actually a great album, but no way it is greater than the best ones that followed. I might have agreed in the late 80s though, as I still hadn't quite forgiven them for "going metallic" then.
― Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 29 April 2010 10:29 (fifteen years ago)
As a fan of the Billy Corgan-led Smashing Pumpkins, I see no reason why legacy means a jot to one's enjoyment of music that's already been made.
Weezer's a good call, at any rate. Maybe Verve too.

I completely agree with that. I'm always surprised when I see One Step Beyond in best albums lists.
My nomination for that would be XTC. Drums & Wires is where they became a great band.

Daft Punk is a good call. Regarding Duran Duran, I actually like "Seven And The Ragged Tiger" a lot, but still not as good as the first two, and they really lost it from the fourth onwards.
― Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 29 April 2010 11:41 (fifteen years ago)
They peaked with "New Gold Dream", which was three albums later.

― Football's Flocking Home (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 April 2010 11:44 (fifteen years ago)
I'm actually a really big fan of Duran Duran but I think there's no doubt that they would have a better legacy if they had split after the first two albums which are perfect. Apart from Notorious I don't think they made another really good album just various great songs spread out over the last 25 years.
I think the problem is everytime they get back in the publics affections they manage to mess it up. After they got back on track with The Wedding Album they put out Thank You. When the original lineup got back together in 2003 they got a great reaction, all they had to do was put out a decent album but instead they released the well below average Astronaut.
― Kitchen Person, Thursday, 29 April 2010 12:34 (fifteen years ago)
That was an xpost to Geir by the way.

Their third album was their best, no question, but the "legend" was never higher after their second album (especially if they had broken up immediately after Bernard Butler left and never toured "Dog Man Star").

I think these bands' legacies havent been too tainted by anything they did after their second album. All 3 are thought of highly, a least on these boards.
― Bill Magill, Thursday, 29 April 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)
Their "legacy would have been much better." Which is not to say any has a particularly shitty legacy. I think highly of all three. Well, two of them. If you count the "Illusion" albums as one album, GNR would have been much better off without "Spaghetti" and "Democracy." I like "Songs of the Free" a lot, but it's nowhere near the first two. And no one needs "Third Stage."
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 29 April 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)
Ha, I thought you were talking about Appetite and Lies Lies Lies and I still agreed.

I read GNR as Appetite and GNR Lies, which would make more sense (especially since Spaghetti Incident was an improvement over the Illusion ones.)
