To be honest this is the last Fall album I really paid attention to.

Dr. Buck's Letter, with Cyber Insekt being a killer opener.

This is the last stone-cold *great* Fall album, but there've been two or three since then (COTC, IWS, YFOC) that are all but.

Probably going to vote Ketamine Sun, but it's really not easy to choose between a good four or five of these. Last four tracks are hideously underrated, btw

I just listened to this album again and I have to agree that song is really shocking, what were they thinking with those awful keyboard trumpets?

I voted for Dr, Buck's Letter just ahead of Serum. This album would easily make my Fall top 5.

Dr. Bucks, if I think about it. Or Ketamine. But "Oprah Winfrey, she studied bees" might be my favorite shoutout ever.

I've only heard this album on Youtube.

agreed that LUS on is one of the best periods of the band. i'm a little cool on "fall heads roll" and "are you are missing winner" is a disaster but the new one is amazing, up there with LUS and the Unutterable and county on the click.

Still don't know why Are You Are Missing Winner is so bad and hated. It's far from their best album but doesn't seem particularly in a different league to the other albums from that period. Love My Ex-Classmates' Kids.

those two + reformation ptlc are merely ok-to-good, every single other album the fall have made since the mid-90's is nothing short of genius and I will defend that opinion to the grave

Ah no way this song sounds like some bizarre lost Twin Peaks audio w/ MES on it somehow, I kinda love it actually.

I straight-up decided today that this might be my favourite Fall album, with Levitate and Perverted By Language hovering somewhere nearby

I'd even go as far as to say that The Fall's run of untrammeled genius began with Cerebral Caustic, but I'm pretty much just talking about one song here (the obvious). Mind you it's one of the greatest things recorded by mortal man

(LUS is on average a pretty GOOD if overlong album IMO, but its highs justify its stated excellence - then the fun really began)

I think Unutterable, COTC, and Imperial Wax Solvent all make the case that the Fall were one of the best bands of the last decade...throw Levitate in there, and WOW!...

Yep, seem to remember Peel referring to some sort of 'silly disagreement'.

With the BBC, it was implied, rather than with Peel himself.

The way he interpreted the bit about the palm pilot is nothing short of genius.

His barely contained laughter in this bit was the first time I got a glimpse of the soft underbelly of MES.

MES's line reading of "she runs my diary and I DON-loadit" is all-time

Also he is 100% reading that article for the first time & cutting the vocal at the exact same time.

The laughter was also after the track opening with "I lost my temper with a friend / mocked him and treated him with rudeness /and though I tried to make amends / still I miss him and walk a dark corridor" - still seems like a revelation to see him opening up like this.

Sorry to parachute in, but just to point out that the song was first performed at London Astoria 2 on 24 May 2000, and MES basically read out most of the article. At that point there weren't any of the apparently more personal bits, they didn't appear until later. They started recording the album mid-year; a few weeks later. So what you hear on the album is not MES reading the article for the first time.

i was at that gig. it was memorable for that first performance of dr buck’s letter.

these chortles and vulnerabilities seeping out prob make Unutterable through Clutter my favorite period of The Fall. I'd been buying records since the 80s, but this zone makes me laugh harder and draws me closer with his defiance in the face of self-inflicted decay.
