the important thing is that this is not hippie or glam long hair, this is short hair left to wild excess.

Pineapple hair is pretty much a grown-out mohawk gone wrong.

I recall the rats nest on top, but buzzed from the temples on down, being referred to as "brioche". I had this hair.

(Yes, I know, so did Siouxsie, but I picked a pic with her natural hair.)

Lately, I've been delectating over Wizzard:

bendy, Monday, 10 May 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

wizzard's makeup & facial hair combo somehow never caught on

Brio, Monday, 10 May 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

Americans tended to do more big Glam style a la hair metal.

It didn't have quite that combination of being completely disgustingly ratted but also carefully sculpted like topiary the way that British big hair went.

3-D Whinge-ometer (Masonic Boom), Monday, 10 May 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

Some of these are a variation on a shag. Basically its a case of spending quite a bit of time working on your hair to make it look like you never brush or comb it.

ImprovSpirit, Monday, 10 May 2010 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

It was pretty common among some US HC bands,

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_k-nrWPgxpbI/Sc__KLuCcoI/AAAAAAAAAlo/NJjUUDPCtqs/s400/image+76.bmp

gradually matting and clumping down to anarcho-crusty-dreads by the end of the decade.

bendy, Monday, 10 May 2010 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

Big Stick were from New York. (There are actually pictures where their hair was way more insane than on the record cover I posted, but I'm not finding them on line right now.) Also, some guys in T.S.O.L. (mid/late '80s metal sellout era), I think. Also, this guy, maybe:

scott seward, Monday, 10 May 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, there definitely were two traditions. One was big glam rock hair, which came down from Keith Richards to glam, which was piled up on top, but long in the back and sides.

And then there was the post-quiff hair that came down through the DA and rockabilly hair grown out and wild - this is what Nick Cave was doing. Which was big big on top, but shorter on the sides (though sometimes the very back would grow sort of mulletish)
