1990s Reissue Thread!

Hello everybody. I love 90s music a lot, mostly college rock or indie, and I would love to have a place where we can talk specifically about music from the 90s that is being reissued on vinyl or CD, because I don't want to miss anything. Please share whatever you hear about here, and thanks in advance!

Evan, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 04:47 (fifteen years ago)

Just saw that The Amps - Pacer is being reissued on vinyl!

Evan, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 13:52 (fifteen years ago)

Also, just some bands that I'd love to see reissued, who also need it badly:

The Lilys
The Pastels
The Cannanes
The Ropers

I think I heard that The Ropers might get one, and apparently "All The Time" is still available on vinyl, but they still need it.

Evan, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 14:10 (fifteen years ago)

you can buy the amps cd for a dollar. in the name of environmentalism, they should hold off on reissues until every last dollar amps cd is bought.

scott seward, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 14:16 (fifteen years ago)

Haha very true! At my record store there is always one copy of it in the clearance bin. Luckily though, it looks like its only being reissued on vinyl.

Evan, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

Also Medicine reissues would be nice.

Evan, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 22:01 (fifteen years ago)

That's another band that clogs up dollar bins... did their albums ever come out on vinyl?

Feelies' Time For A Witness could be reissued ...

tylerw, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 22:03 (fifteen years ago)

Medicine? My store is competitively selling the CDs for between 17.99 and 38.99 (based on amazon prices). I'd be happy to find one in a dollar bin! As for vinyl copies I haven't done any research honestly.

Evan, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

And yeah Feelies would be great. I know the owner of Bar/None records and he expressed a possibility of reissuing the later albums but I don't know if it'll happen any time soon.

Evan, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

Funny, I see copies of these albums floating around for $5.00 around here...

This year I re-bought "The Buried Life," "Shot Forth Self Living" and "Sounds of Medicine" for $2 each (CD), and they were pretty much brand new... I mean, if people are buying them for 18-39 dollars, this world has gone insane.

the island's magical waterslide vagina of light (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised if the Amazon price was because people got sick of trying to move them for a penny each and the only sellers left are the opportunist types who figure someone will pay that much for them...

baffled (when not disgusted) by record stores that base their prices on what some random internet asshole is asking for

contenderizer, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 22:27 (fifteen years ago)

The 1st Medicine LP exists on vinyl. Found several copies cheap years ago at the (then) annual Mammoth Music Mart in Skokie, IL (RIP), but only bought one.

drench, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 22:29 (fifteen years ago)

yeah creation were still doing LPs when that one came out. i think there might even be an aussie LP version

keeley mod (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 22:58 (fifteen years ago)

i had shot forth on vinyl for years. on creation. maybe it was u.k. vinyl only? i don't remember. definitely sounded cool on vinyl. that album is pretty fucked up sound-wise.

^^^^^ this. disgusting fucking savages imho

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 13 May 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

Its actually basing it off of the majority of the prices online, not one "internet asshole". In the end, we make a profit off of rare OOP items that sell for high online, and we don't charge too much for items that wouldn't sell above 1.99 or 2.99. Also, prices fluctuate, and we pull inventory after a period of time and re-price it to stay current. Those Medicine albums are actually due to be priced lower, and we're in that process. Our business model works, where most record stores that depend on new items and who slap 8.00 price tags on all used items fail.

baffled (when not disgusted) by record stores that base their prices on what some random internet asshole is asking for

Still remember walking into an Austin store (which shall remain unnamed) and finding some ridiculous prices. This was back when I was filling a lot of gaps in my post-punk era stuff... was excited to find Gang of Four's Songs of the Free... until I saw something like $89.99 on the price tag. This was "based on the Amazon.com price," I learned upon asking. Mentioned no one would buy it at that price but, you know, they stuck to their guns. Found it a few weeks later at Waterloo Records for $7.99 used.

A few months later I came across Joy Division's Peel Sessions CD... the original 1990 issue, not the 2001(?) era reissue with a bit different cover art. This one was priced around $115, again, based on Amazon prices. I talked the guy at the register down to $10 and that was that.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

my hunch is that those insane Amazon prices are using some algorithm to automatically adjust price based on availability. I've seen used DVDs jump from like $10 to $70 in a day when they get down to a single merchant, then back to normal once someone else lists it.

nuttin doin (herb albert), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

Yep, wouldn't be surprised.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

Can anyone who sells on Amazon confirm/deny?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

No we don't have anything that adjusts it that sporadically, and we aren't trying to screw over customers. If something is rare we have to charge what we see as its current price range. We price competitively so we are a good deal and it gets sold- not so we can squeeze money out of somebody with a vague rareness justification. Waterloo Records may have been screwing themselves over by slapping 7.99 on it, I don't know, but I know that the whole used section where everything is 7.99/dependence on new items to make money model is failing. The referential pricing and constant circulation of mainly used items model is working.

Evan, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:39 (fifteen years ago)

I myself would love if nobody based prices of music on what other people sell it for, cause then I'd have a huge collection of rare vinyl that I purchased on ebay for 7.99 a piece. Thats not how it works though, with anything. CDs aren't loaves of bread or something, specific titles have their own degree of availability, and we have to pay attention to that in order to stay in business.

Evan, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

And as a store buyer, you're buying the rare stuff for a fair price right? For example, if you are selling a disc for 90 bucks on the floor, you paid the seller 30-45 bucks for it right?

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

I have a buddy at a record store who's told me they intentionally pay low prices for rare stuff, then mark it way up on Amazon or some similar outlet. Reason being, if a person's coming to a local used shop with something really rare, then that person probably doesn't know what the album is worth. Can't speak for specific record stores but I'd imagine that's a pretty common practice.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

Well we have a low cap on what we can spend per single CD, but we let the seller know, and they are free to decide whether they would still like to sell it anyway or not. We would never take advantage of a seller. If they still want to get rid of it, we're happy to take it. It is totally up to them. We don't want to upset anyone, and our business depends on people selling to us. We have to set such a low cap so we can afford to constantly make buys, and if that $90 CD never sold and we had to keep lowering the price, we'd be taking a much bigger risk if we spent $30 on it initially.

Evan, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

Anyway though, does anybody know of some great reissues coming out?

Evan, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

There's this Speed Dating comp of all No. 6's singles, came out last year, haven't heard it mentioned here before ... includes Tindersticks, Dean Wareham, Greg Dulli/Marcy Mays, tons of Dwarves and Vegetarian Meat and Unrest, all sorts of early 90s college rock for ya.

dad a, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

There was a record store up near the IL-WI border that only lasted a couple months, but the dude that ran it was extremely shady. I went in there one day and, although he had a great selection, almost everything was priced at $24 and above. I asked him why stuff was so expensive and he told me that he based his prices off eBay (this was 2002ish). I went home and looked up some of the records I had my eye on, saw they were priced exactly the same as in the store. Because, guess what, he was the seller!

The Connells are finally going to have their first few albums reissued! The TVT deal with Bicycle is really great. I've been wanting Boylan Heights on CD for years.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

LOL! xp

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 13 May 2010 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

dad a, that comp sounds great!

Evan, Thursday, 13 May 2010 17:18 (fifteen years ago)

Hahaha thats hilarious, jon!

Evan, Thursday, 13 May 2010 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

i look at what people are PAYING online for records. not what they are selling things for. well, that's not entirely true. sometimes that can be helpful too. if 10 people are selling something and they are all in the same general price range then that can be helpful.

scott seward, Thursday, 13 May 2010 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

apalled that there is no mention of the Bill Fox "Shelter From The Smoke" reissue on this thread, which has been blowing me away regularly for the past few months. (on Scat.)

ian, Thursday, 13 May 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

Well Amazon is helpful because we can scan the UPC, which makes the process more efficient.
ian- I'll check it out!

Released in 1995 on Creation Wake Up! is the fourth album by the Boo Radleys Although the band had received critical acclaim with their previous album, Giant Steps, Wake Up! was their first true commercial success, reaching number one in the UK album charts. there is going to be also this, thanks for pointing this out F'n'B.

Re- Released on 17/05/10 on Cherry Red Records.

Giant Steps is the third album by the Boo Radleys, released in 1993. NME and Select named it as album of the year. It reached the UK Top 20, but did not spawn a Top 40 single. The title is inspired by John Coltrane’s album of the same name. The Boo Radleys were never comfortable fitting into any of the easily defined categories that Pigeon-holed so many British bands in the early 1990s. Arriving on the scene as shoe-gazing My Bloody Valentine wannabes, they signed to Alan McGee's hip-to-the-times Creation Records.

They surprised everyone by releasing Giant Steps in early '93. Living up to its title, the album is indeed a step above and away both from what their peers were doing and what was expected of the band themselves. The album is a cornucopia of varying influences from the Smiths-y "Wish I Was Skinny" to the lovely brass arrangement in "Lazarus". Giant Steps is a mouthful, containing 17 songs, but it's also their definitive album. This re-issue brings together all the b-sides and singles from around the time into one great triple CD.

CD1: Original album track listing:

1. "I Hang Suspended" - 3:57
2. "Upon Ninth and Fairchild" - 4:50
3. "Wish I Was Skinny" - 3:37

5. "Butterfly McQueen" - 3:28

8. "Barney (...and Me)" - 4:42
9. "Spun Around" - 2:31
10. "If You Want It, Take It" - 2:47
11. "Best Lose the Fear" - 4:12
12. "Take the Time Around" - 4:07
13. "Lazarus" - 4:38
14. "One Is For" - 1:36
