December 1997, Select magazine present their 100 people "who define the pre-millennial world" as voted by the staff and various luminaries of cool Britannia (Zoe Ball, John Robb, Charlotte Raven, Ozwald Boateng, DJ Rap... ).
Looking back from the lofty heights of 2010, who, from the top 30, now looks like the worst, most baffling choice?

Hmm..

Beck? A dude who made a record, went away, came back made another one, etc.

That said, John Woo.

Mark G, Friday, 14 May 2010 11:33 (fifteen years ago)

would love to see renzo rosso's inclusion explained

Select also published a list of those that weren't deemed worthy of a place: "ten people who weren't included - and, frankly it's no mistake"

1. Damon Albarn
2. Chris Evans
3. Steve Coogan
4. Paul Weller
5. Crispin Mills
6. Bono
7. Madonna
8. Ice-T
9. Anna Friel
10. The Spice Girls

Renzo Rosso: "Diesel's brilliant ad campaigns have been statospherically influential... Diesel exudes the kind of knowing, eclectic 90s cool that everyone seeks but few manage to pull off"

Nicky Wire, for the most unhappy image result when I googled to find out who he was.

kkvgz, Friday, 14 May 2010 11:40 (fifteen years ago)

going with Prince Naseem much as I loved watching him pummel no-hopers and past it champions at the time

this skit is ba-na-nas (onimo), Friday, 14 May 2010 11:41 (fifteen years ago)

Cauty & Drummond are kinda baffling given this was 1997.

Matt DC, Friday, 14 May 2010 11:45 (fifteen years ago)

I was looking through a copy of Vox from 1997 recently. It's like looking into a different world. They're getting excited about Three Colours Red and Tiger. Louise Wener is on the cover. There's a picture of a lingerie model who looks exactly like Brian Molko, which is kinda lol.

Nicky Wire - he was a phenomenal tit then and is (arguably even more of) a phenomenal tit now.

BLOODY BOLLOCKS HELL! (aldo), Friday, 14 May 2010 11:50 (fifteen years ago)

This was the "we hate Damon the songwriter but we like Graham so yeah" thing kicking off. God, Select got so joyless and shit after Britpop's peak.

i had thought the anti-oasis backlash had begun sooner

They were on this tip which got a bit of press at the time, being a more innocent era and all

Prince Naseem. The poor man's Macho Camacho. Pretty easy choice.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 14 May 2010 12:18 (fifteen years ago)

This was the "we hate Damon the songwriter but we like Graham so yeah" thing kicking off.

Coxon scrapes into the list at #100. Albarn is lambasted for making the anti-Cool Britannia comment "nothing good is happening in Britain at the moment", and for "displaying a Man-at-C&A understanding of US casualwear".

In the following issue though, Blur ("Graham's album") makes #9 in their EOY poll (Be Here Now at #14).

Hah, I didn't notice Blair there.

1997's kind of an odd time to have been trumpeting the importance of John Cusack

Surely it's the Yahoo! guys? Although looking at it objectively, there aren't too many "WTF who are they?" type folks on this. There are a lot of people who aren't doing much today, but they left some sort of legacy. I'd love to compare this to, say, the NME cool list 1997.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 14 May 2010 13:29 (fifteen years ago)

NME cool list 1997

top 5 was Tiny Ultrasound, Bahamadia, Wrekked Train, Tjinder Singh and John Thompson iirc

mdskltr (blueski), Friday, 14 May 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

Bahamadia? That's not even a real STD..

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 14 May 2010 13:56 (fifteen years ago)

Were Ultrasound actually any good at all? I don't remember what they sounded like.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 14 May 2010 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

took me a minute to figure out what "the yahoo guys" even meant

sonderangerbot, Friday, 14 May 2010 14:03 (fifteen years ago)

Bahamadia? That's not even a real STD..

And "Who Let The Dogs Out?" still three years away...

kkvgz, Friday, 14 May 2010 14:07 (fifteen years ago)

To be fair, if their claim to fame is "defining the pre-millenial world," should we be surprised that they're irrelevant now, here in the post-millenium? I have to cast my mind back to 1997 and say which of these people would I be most annoyed at finding on such a list.

Of the ones I've heard of, Kurt Cobain is the odd one out - - - how was he pitched in the article? Godfather to all the others? "THERE COULD BE NO YAHOO WITHOUT NEVERMIND!"?

Doctor Casino, Friday, 14 May 2010 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

What, no Bill Clinton?
