still tippin vs what we do

although "still tippin" obv doesn't feature anyone with the status of jay-z, both of these songs are three-rapper posse cuts that were arguably the best, if not the most visible, songs of the texas & east coast soul sampling (respectively) mini-'eras' in popular rap

not sure i'd call 'still tippin' a soul sampling song. but ya freeway for sure

jaxon, Monday, 17 May 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

ha i didn't!

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 May 2010 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe my favourite part of "What We Do" is when Jay leans over Freeway's shoulder and say "KEEP GOIN'!" Electric.

rennavate, Monday, 17 May 2010 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

still tippin = 3 rapper posse cut representing high point of when texas rap was a 'thing' (obv i recognize the issues w/ being this reductive when it comes to texas rap, but play along)
what we do = 3 rapper posse cut representing high point of when soul sampling was a 'thing'

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 May 2010 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

xpost. wait, is "east coast soul sampling" like one thing? vs texas? not both texas and east coast 'soul sampling'?

ah, i see

jaxon, Monday, 17 May 2010 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

i'm still not sure which one i'm picking -- i'm gonna vote "still tippin" #1 in my 05-09 ballot, but "what we do" is obv a classic on the same level

The Reverend, Monday, 17 May 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

have to go for what we do i think? man this is hard

just sayin, Monday, 17 May 2010 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

By the way, I didn't need more than ten seconds to decide who I was voting for. "What We Do."

rennavate, Monday, 17 May 2010 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

weird pairing, but i'm gonna be an obvious lil Freeway stan and vote for "What We Do."

i remember seeing "Still Tippin" on BET Uncut for like a year before Jones got signed and it became a mainstream hit, all that time I knew a lot of people that were into underground Houston shit and still think that song is kinda boring and unremarkable compared to a lot of stuff out of that scene at the time. i think if Dr. Teeth hadn't made such a good video for it back when it was just a regional record we wouldn't be talking about it today.

couldn't think of anything to write instead of 'steendriver' (some dude), Monday, 17 May 2010 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

i really disagree with that -- i mean it's certainly more indicative of how good texas rap was/is than a huge standout album but so many parts of that song are so sick -- the violin sample, slim thug's whole fucking verse (he should've just retired after)

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 May 2010 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

also i thought this was a pretty obvious pairing! not obvious but like, the tenuous connections i drew sort of made sense for an arbitrary poll

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 May 2010 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

maybe a better poll would've been still tippin original vs still tippin single version

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 May 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

for the record i like the single version better -- it's weird that both songs have totally different moods -- the original version is cool on some top-down summer jam funk shit, but i love how the single version is more drive slow, menacing & foreboding

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 May 2010 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

(he should've just retired after

sadly otm really

I thought there were some nice joints on Already Platinum, but that was probably due to the Neptunes giving him some awesome beats.

rennavate, Monday, 17 May 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

i had high hopes for that dude. they did not pan out.

xxp to myself -- this was kinda echoed in the video with it being shot on an overcast day -- you have slim thug's army of cars slowly swerving down the street under this gray sky all villain like -- it's very archetypal in a way that i think is incredibly dope, intentional or not

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 May 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

wonder where "the chick giving road head to slim thug" ranks on the all time list of video ho displays during the BET uncut era? certainly behind the "girl who gets her ass crack swiped by a credit card" in the tip drill video and "completely naked treadmill user" in that one 504 boyz video

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 May 2010 21:48 (fifteen years ago)

i never even noticed that that's what was going on in that video

but no this is not an obvious pairing at all.
