I mean, stuff like Imagination, D-Train, Whispers, Madonna's first album stuff etc. Strictly speaking, it isn't really disco, is it? Being that disco was a largely 70s genre based upon largely "real" instruments. The stuff I mention her is probably just as related to 80s synthpop as it is to 70s disco.
So, is there a name for this genre?

I've always called it 80's Groove.
post Disco early hacienda stuff right?
I believe the kids are calling it boogie now....

there's some related talk on this thread
the term 'boogie' as referring to early 80s post-disco R&B, C or D
― hobbes, Friday, 21 May 2010 20:53 (fifteen years ago)
this too, but it's on a more mid-80s tip. great thread nonetheless.Electro R&B/1984-1986 S/D

As usual, xhuxk brings the truth...
Anyway, I still think "boogie" is a really lazy name for the '80s post-disco r&b stuff. Is that really the best name they could come up with in retrospect, especially when apparently nobody called the music that when it actually existed?
"I know, let's pick a name that nobody will confuse with '40s boogie-woogie, '50s country boogie, '60s Latin boogaloo, '70s boogie rock, and 25 percent of hit '70s disco song titles that have absolutely nothing to do with the music we're talking about." "Okay, how about 'boogie'?? That'll work."

'rare groove' ?...though the wiki includes 70's funk/soul in its classification we never did.

Groove maybe. I have seen some compilations with this sort of music named as "80s soul weekender", but they also seemed to include the odd non-electro track, so I guess that's not quite it.
Now, of course, it is also close to what is referred to as electro today, I guess particularly if you add -disco, naming it electro-disco.
― Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Friday, 21 May 2010 22:18 (fifteen years ago)
electro-discoThat works I think. (Without the "disco" suffix, I think of "electro" as being closer to early hip-hop -- stuff like Afrika Bambaataa.)

But then, tracks like "The Message" and "Planet Rock" were almost seen as part of the same scene back then.

'retro-groove'...going back to the 80's, 'rare groove'...for the 70's and 'vintage groove' anything before that ?
are you into 'retro groove' Geir ?...if so, you got any mixes floating round ?
― beat boy damager, power 2 the people (Its all about face), Friday, 21 May 2010 22:34 (fifteen years ago)
Those retro groove things tend to include less synthesized 70s disco too, which is not so much my cup of tea.

i remember "dance pop" being used to describe early madonna. i never had a problem with that. fairly straightforward.
― scott seward, Friday, 21 May 2010 22:38 (fifteen years ago)
yeah...i've always been a big fan of the synthesized bassline and tend to draw the line on that basis, though i will make allowances for the brothers louis johnson and stanley clarke.
― beat boy damager, power 2 the people (Its all about face), Friday, 21 May 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)
I wouldn't object at it, but it isn't particularly specific. Plus I feel the only "Like a Virgin" track that sounds anything like what I am talking about here would be "Pretender".
― Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Friday, 21 May 2010 22:53 (fifteen years ago)
Loved the madonna stuff she did with jellybean benitez...without holiday, borderline and lucky star i doubt she woulda got the initial traction to go intercontinental.
but truly, can anything beat a synth bassline and chicken scratch guitar over a funky backbeat with some 808 percussion ?
― beat boy damager, power 2 the people (Its all about face), Friday, 21 May 2010 23:03 (fifteen years ago)
I'm pretty sure normal people just call this stuff 80s soul and r&b.
― Spectrum, Saturday, 22 May 2010 01:51 (fifteen years ago)
I might have gone for "garage" but that's both too specific (what Levan played) and too broad (it had a long life, ultimately denoting insipid vocal house nonsense). So yeah, "boogie".
