'Adieu'? D'oh! Of course I meant 'ado'.

Anyway, I'm sure pfunkboy will be voting for Fatso Jetson. But there are quite a few gems even in this late stage - it's not just Greg Ginn under a bunch of different names.

The Roger Miller solo stuff is interesting (I have a cut-out tape of Elemental Guitar knocking around somewhere); the Oxbow album is one of the best records they put out in the '90s (even if it was a licence from another label); and I still play the Guns, Books & Tools debut.

Have not heard ONE of these (and had no knowledge til now of that Minutemen compilation.) Just realizing I was far off the SST bus by '96.

I turn it up when I hear the banjo (Dan Peterson), Friday, 21 May 2010 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

Jambang ftw.

Vision Creation Mansun (NickB), Friday, 21 May 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

I have heard none of these btw.

Vision Creation Mansun (NickB), Friday, 21 May 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

yeah guys vote fatso jetson or a sort of quartet! give them a vote!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 21 May 2010 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

If you haven't heard any, now's your chance to give 'em a shot! I dunno how many are on Spotify or eMusic or whatever but I'm sure many of them can be found.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Friday, 21 May 2010 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

I voted for the Leaving Trains, but the Last was pretty good too. I haven't heard a lot of these though...

ImprovSpirit, Friday, 21 May 2010 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

I'm with Dan and Nick - haven't heard a single one of these, and I have a feeling that it was more to do with the big imbroglio around the Negs and the "U2" single than any perceived quality issue I had with the albums. Oh well.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 21 May 2010 19:25 (fifteen years ago)

stoner rockers who like kyuss/qotsa should check out Fatso Jetson and A Sort Of Quartet. More desert rock though, not heavy like Kyuss.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 21 May 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

OXBOW!

Fists all gnarly and dick-dented (jjjusten), Friday, 21 May 2010 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

Fatso Jetson just released their new album last week.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 21 May 2010 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

Oxbow is the only one of these I've actually heard, I too was well of the SST bus by the mid 90s. Are Jambang as bad as they sound, isn't it one of Ginn's projects?

Via the thread on Damaged that got revived earlier, here's an interview from 2008 with Greg Ginn by William DuVall of Alice In Chains (who was also briefly a member of BL'AST! back in the day before they signed to - ta da! - SST):

Did these records ever see the light of day?:

Hor How Much?
Mojack Rub A Dub
Fastgato Feral
Confront James We Are Humored

They were announced when SST signed its distribution deal with Koch back in 2003, but I don't believe they were ever actually released. They're not available from the SST Superstore.

The only one that I'm sure actually exists is the Fastgato, as I found a leak of it online somewhere a few months ago. Maybe it's just a bad copy, but the production is AWFUL - I'm normally a fan of anything Scott Reynolds sings on, but I couldn't get through more than two songs.

lol lowest turn out yet. Good show though stoner rockers of ILM!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 28 May 2010 23:41 (fifteen years ago)

is it safe to assume noone gave a shit about SST by 1996?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 29 May 2010 10:27 (fifteen years ago)

Yes.

Matt #2, Saturday, 29 May 2010 11:31 (fifteen years ago)

I think the only one of these I've heard is Guns, Books & Tools and that's only because my wife used to know someone in the band and we bumped into him at a gig a few years ago and he gave her the CD. The Oxbow is probably good but I haven't heard that one.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 29 May 2010 11:38 (fifteen years ago)

Greg is very inspiring isn't he?

I can see where one of the angriest albums ever (Damaged) came from

Fooking spooky

Fer Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Saturday, 29 May 2010 14:34 (fifteen years ago)

I like Jambang a lot, and am sorry I missed Ginn's most recent tour. It's definitely an atmosphere/live thing, but a very cool one.

eight years pass...

My favorite piece of trivia about William DuVall is that he cowrote Dionne Farris' "I Know" which spent 29 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Top 40 in 1995.
