The Silent Shout Poll

This has never been polled before, surprisingly. It's a definite ILM favourite, and the results should be interesting because there doesn't really seem to be one BIG consensus song which everyone got behind together.

Oh for goodness sake, could a mod change the title.

Davek (davek_00), Saturday, 22 May 2010 08:00 (fifteen years ago)

lol

also it's mothers' health but it's ok everyone gets it wrong

teledyldonix, Saturday, 22 May 2010 08:23 (fifteen years ago)

mothers health > everything else

although it would be really, really hard to pick my second favorite song on this as it's all amazing

Popper, Saturday, 22 May 2010 10:35 (fifteen years ago)

Either Mothers' Health or From Off to On. Think I'll vote for the latter since the former's probably going to sweep this.

Tonight I Dine on Turtle Soup (EDB), Saturday, 22 May 2010 12:06 (fifteen years ago)

Forest Families.

StanM, Saturday, 22 May 2010 12:10 (fifteen years ago)

We Share Our Mothers' Health over the title track and One Hit.

Christyles, Saturday, 22 May 2010 13:19 (fifteen years ago)

title track

Face Book (dyao), Saturday, 22 May 2010 13:25 (fifteen years ago)

neverland

Michael B, Saturday, 22 May 2010 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

xp I just love the way it sets the mood for the rest of the album. as soon as that first note hits you know what you're in for. and then the bass note syncs up.

I've always preferred the mother's health remixes to the actual track.

Face Book (dyao), Saturday, 22 May 2010 13:27 (fifteen years ago)

title track for me, not even close

dmr, Saturday, 22 May 2010 14:55 (fifteen years ago)

The title track arpeggio could be my favorite synth riff ever.

bendy, Saturday, 22 May 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

mothers health

johnny crunch, Saturday, 22 May 2010 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

The title track and "Mothers' Health" are great, undeniably, but this album's all about the hidden key track -- "The Captain," "From Off to On," "Forest Families" -- the ones that creep up on you when you least expect it. Of those, I'll go for "Forest Families" -- oh! the tension...

Did I mention the live version is even better?

"Marble House"

ksh, Saturday, 22 May 2010 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

mamas' health > marble house > title track > other stuff i can never really remember that much

The Reverend, Saturday, 22 May 2010 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

na na na or from off to on

ma/y/aoi (Future_Perfect), Saturday, 22 May 2010 15:49 (fifteen years ago)

i am having trouble choosing between mothers' health and the captain

teledyldonix, Saturday, 22 May 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

My next favorite part, the percussion "Like a Pen". The way it builds up from that cheek-popping sound- the way the song fills in the space around that lonely and slightly goofy click.

bendy, Saturday, 22 May 2010 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

na na na

This is kinda the only transitional/filler song on the album, to my ears.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 22 May 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

i used to feel that way about na na na but now i really like it.

anyway i finally decided on the captain.

teledyldonix, Saturday, 22 May 2010 22:54 (fifteen years ago)

I still really like it! But it just feels inessential, like a transitional piece rather than a focal point.

between this and the stina nordenstam thread, idk why ilx is suddenly talking about winter albums in summer. so wrong.

between the sleek mdma rush of "silent shout" and the panicked propulsion of "neverland" for me - will vote the latter as it's pretty underrated

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 24 May 2010 08:01 (fifteen years ago)

the captain for me. sounds like something old.

village idiot (dog latin), Monday, 24 May 2010 10:08 (fifteen years ago)

The first half of The Captain is just stunning in its simplicity, but I voted for Mother's Health because whenever I listen to it I wish there was an extended version where the last minute goes on for an eternity.

boxedjoy, Monday, 24 May 2010 12:32 (fifteen years ago)

WSOMH

^^^^^^^

The way this track builds and builds for about 2/3 of its runtime is really, really stunning.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Friday, 28 May 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

one of the best album ever!

this will end up in my Top five for the 2000's. here is a short story: at a job and was in a battle for a management position. he had the inside track but i knew i was better. well decision day came and they gave to job to him instead of me. i had this album in my car the day the broke the news to me and then transfered me, wanted the goth in me to take over. this album, of course, satisfied that feeling with "Marble House" (could even vote for "One Hit" or "Forest Families." and clean air :-) in this poll). fast forward in time, that guy got demoted and i became his boss about six months later. my location, LAX, was much bigger with more going on. as they say: things happen for a reason.

just an album that seems to satisfy.

Trees there will be Apples fruits maybe

Christyles, Monday, 31 May 2010 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

damn I missed this. Marble House definitely. Forest Families is the only one I'm not so keen on. Maybe WSOMH or Like a Pen second.

How did that come in 5th? I absolutely adore this album and every track on it, but that to me is the least interesting track on the album, by far. Better than Neverland? The Captain? Like a Pen? No No No. Someone please defend this choice as THE best track on the album; I can't possibly imagine a good argument for it.

9. Forest Families 7

This makes me very, very happy.

well it's all really subjective. i love the bangers on the album but i personally enjoy the low key songs that keep the pacing and mood of the album (from off to on, nanana)

on to the song itself. i love the simple arpeggiated synth line with the lovely melody. what makes this track really special for me though is the 100 copies of karin's voice moving in every direction starting @ around 1 minute in

don cab for cutie (Future_Perfect), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

also it kinda works as a soliloquy for karin

don cab for cutie (Future_Perfect), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

the vocoded/masked voice is a big theme on this album. i mean, the name of the album itself implies something hidden within 'shouting' to get out. i think the masked vocals is a personification of this idea.

so we have fragile, simple song like na na na which puts this idea at the forefront. that, for me, is why i think it's such a special song

don cab for cutie (Future_Perfect), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

well said. the album is an embarrassment of riches.

untrue pitch, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

every song on this is amazing

bageled by dementeds (HI DERE), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

had i seen this i would have voted for "the captain" those tom rolls are probably my favorite thing on the whole album.

goole, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 20:28 (fifteen years ago)

I voted "Marble House" but I could make an argument for voting for any of the other tracks, particularly WSOMH and "The Captain".

bageled by dementeds (HI DERE), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

"The Captain" by far this poll's most underrated track, # of votes wise.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

^ by far this threads's most underrated post

ksh, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

I voted for Na Na Na. I remember buying this and on my first listen I didn't really like it much apart from that song which I thought was so sweet. I kept going back to the album because of Na Na Na eventually falling in love with the rest of it. So I have that song to thank for really getting me into them and I love how it stands out as being the really light pretty moment of the record.

As many people have said this album is just about perfect.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 21:02 (fifteen years ago)

The Captain is my favourite too. It makes me think of Macbeth's Weird Sisters for some reason.

village idiot (dog latin), Thursday, 3 June 2010 10:27 (fifteen years ago)

Frankly every track on this general winner of an album is in itself a winner.

Tonight I Dine on Turtle Soup (EDB), Thursday, 3 June 2010 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

This album is the perfect soundtrack for WipeoutHD

drop it like it's hot, Elena (HI DERE), Thursday, 3 June 2010 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

can a mod change the poll results to "we're all winners"

Future_Perfect (LOLK), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

five years pass...

I probably would have voted for 'Marble House', but to be honest I love every song on this album and the production still sounds impeccable to my ears. I think it's fair to say at this point that this record is a 100% bona fide synthpop classic. However, I've often found that the vocals on this record are a love-it-or-hate-it thing... there's been countless times I've played this album to people and the vocals have been a barrier to them getting into the record.

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 02:21 (ten years ago)

From off to on and one hit are my two favorite things here and they ranked the lowest. Shame on you ilm.

weird - was just talking about Silent Shout yesterday. i see this thread is old enough that i was under my old username when I posted first!

my kids are super into Minecraft and there are a couple of tracks on the ... gameplay soundtrack? dunno what you call it... sound like they're very much inspired by the Knife around this era.
