Mexico, camp, horns, Zappa, Mr. Bungle (Matos W.K.), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

"Rock Your Body" in a walk.

"Big Yellow Taxi" was No. 1 on F2K; "Have You Forgotten?" could have been.

Mexico, camp, horns, Zappa, Mr. Bungle (Matos W.K.), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

"Get By" is close, but yeah. Kinda sorry lot overall.

The Reverend, Monday, 24 May 2010 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

there's some decent stuff here

i love 21 questions & rock your body pretty equally, but i'm gonna vote for the former -- talib joint is obv a banger & i've always liked "i can" -- "put that woman first" is also amazing -- fabolous joint was also a nice little radio thing as usual

mr. milquetoast (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

it's not all bad, but there's a distinct lack of greatness other than JT and Kweli

The Reverend, Monday, 24 May 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

Once again I've heard hardly any of these (4, I think) - is there anything on the list that's better than JT?

seandalai, Monday, 24 May 2010 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

Ah ok, people like the Talib Kweli. I'll check it out before casting my crucial vote.

seandalai, Monday, 24 May 2010 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

i love u like a fat kid loves cake

The Reverend, Monday, 24 May 2010 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

just needed to post that

The Reverend, Monday, 24 May 2010 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

obv the "get by" remix is better than the OG tho -- the sample in the jaheim song has been used to death but that song is really great

mr. milquetoast (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

I still can't tell if I like or hate the way Justin pronounces the word "physi-clay."

frozen cookie (Abbott), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

xp: i think it's probably my least favorite use of that sample i've heard tbh

The Reverend, Monday, 24 May 2010 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

it's such a sweet song

mr. milquetoast (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

only jahiem joint i've ever liked is "Could It Be"

The Reverend, Monday, 24 May 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

something about him rubs me wrong, point blank

The Reverend, Monday, 24 May 2010 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

it's hard for me to pinpoint why i love the jaheim song -- very abstract nostalgic thing for me

mr. milquetoast (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

lol, I voted Kelly Rowland because I didn't notice the Taleb Kweli track oops

Have a slice of wine! (HI DERE), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:51 (fifteen years ago)

The worst track on this list is "Like A Stone," which was way overplayed around the time I was making donuts (on my fellow donut-makers' radio station of choice).

frozen cookie (Abbott), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

my brother used to give our teenaged cousins tons of shit over their B2K fandom, it was kind of hilarious

Marni and Louboutin: coming to Tuesdays this fall on FOX (HI DERE), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

that totally soporific busta/mariah joint is the worst thing on here i had to hear all the time

The Reverend, Monday, 24 May 2010 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

see i feel like there's rarely saccharine for the ladies tracks that are as acceptable as the busta & fab joints anymore? i always dug the flipmode/mariah one for some reason on some ja rule/ashanti type ish or something. it has a cool lil beat.

mr. milquetoast (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

listening back, busta's out of tune singing is cute & endearing in a post-autotune context

mr. milquetoast (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

even tho the fab/busta joints are obv inherently insipid i miss when rappers made these light, airy r&b tracks that weren't, like, great by any means but were sort of pleasant to listen to -- "bust it baby pt 2" was kind of like that in a way i guess

mr. milquetoast (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

allowing for the fact that it would be impossible to ever classify plies as "pleasant to listen to"

mr. milquetoast (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 May 2010 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

uh

http://synamatiq.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/drake-black-white.jpg

The Reverend, Monday, 24 May 2010 20:02 (fifteen years ago)

yeah "best i ever had" is sort of like that but drake is an overbearing rapper even on his r&b songs

mr. milquetoast (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 May 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

true

The Reverend, Monday, 24 May 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

still think that busta joint is terrible tho. fab joint is fine but not nearly as good as "into you"

The Reverend, Monday, 24 May 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

altho i would say that "best i ever had" is a classic rap/r&b radio jam

mr. milquetoast (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 May 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

i have trouble remembering the difference xp

mr. milquetoast (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 May 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

"Can't Let You" and "Into You" are like the most lyrical girl songs ever, though.

Never liked "Can't Let You Go", but "Into You" always jumped out at me as "wait....he's doing 4-syllable rhymes through the whole verse.....on a chick song?" Total summer jam to this day and gets my vote.

― The Reverend, Thursday, July 24, 2008 11:57 PM Bookmark

also "can't let u go" has kinda annoying choppy guitars and "into you" is a breezy 80s "juicy fruit"-type summer jam

The Reverend, Monday, 24 May 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

so tempted to vote "say yes" b/c ill blu & shanique's uk funky cover has been so huge over the past year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gi_Y8VAMCM

but honestly it's "i know what you want", sunglasses and beads of sweat and summer vybez

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 24 May 2010 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

i def think of it as more of a mariah joint than a busta one, weirdly. it has her imprint on it.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 24 May 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

bump

Mexico, camp, horns, Zappa, Mr. Bungle (Matos W.K.), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:30 (fifteen years ago)

lemme find a youtube of the ill blu cover of toby keith

mr. milquetoast (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:44 (fifteen years ago)

it's not all bad, but there's a distinct lack of greatness other than JT and Kweli

Rev saying it so I don't have to. Voted Kweli as I'm sure JT will get his due here; does he really need a wider margin?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 13:28 (fifteen years ago)

The Fleetwood Mac song is very good. I thought I should mention it.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 13:31 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I was wondering about that; curious about Boomkat too, partially since I'm not sure I ever really understand who or what a Boomkat was.

Voting Justin. Like the Montgomery Gentry more than the Trace Adkins, though they're almost both the same song. Could take or leave most of the other ones I know (mostly leave), including the country ones.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 25 May 2010 13:58 (fifteen years ago)

...really understood...

xhuxk, Tuesday, 25 May 2010 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

Boomkat was Taryn Manning and her brother and their album is actually pretty good trip-hop/big beat pastiche.

Marni and Louboutin: coming to Tuesdays this fall on FOX (HI DERE), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

obv the "get by" remix is better than the OG tho

disagree with this -- remix is too much "hey check out my guests" and not enough "check out my guests being awesome"

upper mississippi sh@key mo (The Reverend), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Saturday, 29 May 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

yeah there is absolutely nothing special about the "Get By" remix, no great verses -- totally got on the Pitchfork decade list etc. on lineup alone.

love both the Fab/Lil Mo songs here, tempted to vote for one of those. played "4Ever" at my wedding!

Christina NAGLera (some dude), Sunday, 30 May 2010 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

every song with ahead of "21 questions" aside from JT is markedly worse

except maybe lil mo

ok dennis hopper (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 30 May 2010 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

Never minded "Unwell" -- the chorus was stuck in my head for weeks in the fall of '03.

I'm impressed, guys: I only know two of the songs you mentioned. Only Evanescence got massive radio play.
