All the various No-Man and family tree related stuff I had the pleasure of picking up this past month, which in large part prompted my Tim Bowness interview. I especially recommend Alias Grace's _Embers_ to all and sundry, which you can pick up directly at Burning Shed's website (http://www.burningshed.com/).

I read this great book called Reggae Routes recently, so I've been listening to Desmond Dekker - Rockin' Steady: the Best Of; Tougher Than Tough: The Story Of Jamaican Music; This Is Ska; Toots & The Maytals, Funky Kingston as well as Reggae Greats; the Harder They Come soundtrack and The Wailers' Catch A Fire.

Patrick, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New: "The Cold Vein" by Cannibal Ox - best hip hop album of the 21st century to date. Old: Shuggie Otis' "Inspiration Information," Tom Jobim's "Matita Pere" and Mike Westbrook's "Metropolis" (Sun Ra meets the Mike Flowers Pops?). The Avalanches naturally go without saying. Destiny's Child? Like staring at the pseudo-skyscrapers when you come out of Old Street tube station - dazzling and undoubtedly impressive, but rather cold and ruthless, not to mention sexless.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

psychopharmocology? that's a Paul Westerberg song title. any correlation?

Larms, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

psychopharmocology? that's a Paul Westerberg song title. any correlation? probably not but just asking.

Larms, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY is the third album from NYC's Firewater. It hasn't actually been released (pushed back until July), but I managed to get m'self a pre-release copy. Centered around ex-Cop Shoot Cop main man Tod Ashley, Firewater are an ever shifting conglomerate of musicians (often counting members of the Jesus Lizard, Elysian Fields, Soul Coughing and Skeleton Key in its ranks). The band experiments with variety of styles...from klezmer workouts to a barbed cha-cha through to full-out rock numbers. A critic once described them as something akin to LONDON CALLING-era Clash crashing a Jewish wedding. PSYCHOPHARMACOLGY is the band's most adventurous work thus far, and I *HIGHLY* recommend it. For more, check out: www.fireh2o.com. They're great, I promise you!

bows 'cassidy' - luke sutherland is incapable of doing anything wrong, this is album of the year for me unless something amazing comes out in the next 6 months. if this is the sound of spain i am moving there tomorrow. cloudboy'down at the end of the garden'-gorgeous, dream music of montreal 'coquelicot...' -i am amazed people can dismiss this as twee with the complexity of arrangements pearlfishers 'across the milky way' my adult contemporary fare ladytron '604' i don't think it is as retro as everyone else does, maybe i haven't heard enough kraftwerk but they never were as pop as this orange peels 'so far' sunny west coast pop modesty blaise'melancholia' epic pop josef k 'endless soul' to me it sounds like the iron curtain fonda 500 'autumn winter collection' pretty voices harper lee 'go back to bed' a new brighter record!

keith, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mouse On Mars, _Idiology_ is the latest. Spoon's latest is still fresh, and I've been all about the Tim Buckley Anthology lately.

Marquee Moon is my favorite *classic* lately, and Ginuwine is my forward-thinker. Right now, however, Pearl Jam is on VH1; lovely.

...holding my breath for _Survivor_.

Keiko, Monday, 30 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i look at what's out next to the record player and i feel like the apocryphal old man in the cafe who reads the newspaper from exactly one year ago. or many more in my case... much hip hop coming this summer... i hope...

* get ur freak on of course. is it just me or is the cool mix in the video where the song TOTALLY CHANGES unavailable for purchase??? is that is subtle suggestion that the proper way to hear it is in a dj set? and any truth to the rumor that her new album's called "miss e: the addiction"?

* "Beep Me 911" the 12"... the timbo remix moves... like an asp. it's aspish. jason nevins mix suprisingly okay.

* "Salsa" by albert cabrera, b-side of something else called Albertracks. on nervous records.

* Mount Florida.

* Painkiller, by "slack". on sabres' septic cuts. i don't know what to say about this besides the fact that it's perfect. A+++++++ just me or is house and techno not nearly this "reverb-y" anymore?

* "One Sock Missing" by the Grifters. do they still exist?

* "Houserockin" and "I Know You Fine, But How You Doin" by the Gories. they definitely don't which is a shame because the demolition dollrods kind of... um, suck. i'm sorry. i don't care how "into it" the hairy tranny who doesn't play an instrument onstage gets.

* the Ladomat 100 compilations!!!! my lord!!!! "1234" by golden boy feat. miss kittin will infect you and then you will be done for.

"let me tell you about my shoes collection even if you just don't care. are you the guy that looks at women's bodies walking down the street? do you like girls? you have to know about fashion too and that's the way it is. yes, that's what i wanted to say. you are the music master."

Strangely (well, perhaps not that strangely), I'm agreeing with The Pinefox and saying 69 Love Songs. It's making a comeback of Lazurian proportions. And the Pinefox himself, as usual.

the bit at the end of the 'get ur freak on' video is likely part of the next song on the album (or the next single), much as jay- z's 'change the game' video ended with about thirty seconds of 'guilty until proven innocent'.

I'm listening to Joe's Bruce Springsteen CD right now if it helps anyone. It's "Born to Run". The song playing is "Night". I'm sure you're all thrilled. I did have in the Manics' latest a while ago but I'm sick of that. Fucking Nicky Wire, man. You can't be cool if you look like that.
