Doubts Even Here

LeRooLeRoo, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 14:45 (fifteen years ago)

"Senses" always most impressed: those shattered-glass synth samples, those tentative guitar strums, followed by aggressive strums, the way Sumner lets "No reason ever was given" float up like a trial balloon.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

Fantastic record, very consistent throughout. Coming on the heels of the "Ceremony"/"In a Lonely Place" jewel (one of the best 7" discs ever, IMO), New Order was definitely on a roll.

ImprovSpirit, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

Dreams ftw

on the eve of my birthday, while listening to these clips, i realize how much for Bimble wherever you are

Mr. Boo Radley (Bee OK), Thursday, 3 June 2010 06:33 (fifteen years ago)

(i miss)

Mr. Boo Radley (Bee OK), Thursday, 3 June 2010 06:34 (fifteen years ago)

Wow, this is difficult. I love too many of these songs, each for different reasons. Funny how each track can be so immersive, a self-contained exercise in songwriting and production, on an album that's oft criticised for murky sameness.

Millsner, Thursday, 3 June 2010 07:36 (fifteen years ago)

so i have been reading a few Bimble threads tonight: this one the DISINTEGRATION poll took my breath away.

Jesus there is just no way to fuck with this album. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. I was surprised, actually that Dan complained about some song or whatever because as far as I'm concerned there is absolutely not a fucking thing wrong with this album.

― Gross Chapel British Grenadiers (Bimble), Monday, April 13, 2009 1:14 AM (1 year ago)

Disintegration comes out next week!

Mr. Boo Radley (Bee OK), Thursday, 3 June 2010 07:37 (fifteen years ago)

Doubts Even Here.

Dr.C, Thursday, 3 June 2010 09:07 (fifteen years ago)

Senses.

Hazy, Thursday, 3 June 2010 10:46 (fifteen years ago)

Has to be Doubts Even Here - it always has been.

A brief mention for Truth though - that is lovely.

kraudive, Thursday, 3 June 2010 12:04 (fifteen years ago)

sorry to get off track with Bimble last night.

of these video's the best one is "Truth" because of how it ends.

Mr. Boo Radley (Bee OK), Friday, 4 June 2010 05:12 (fifteen years ago)

"Dreams Never End" for me.

Euler, Friday, 4 June 2010 05:20 (fifteen years ago)

it has to be "Doubts Even Here."

Mr. Boo Radley (Bee OK), Saturday, 5 June 2010 06:28 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Saturday, 5 June 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

"Doubts Even Here" will do fine, so I'm voting "The Him."

(Plus, yeah, I miss Bimble right now.)

Lostandfound, Saturday, 5 June 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Sunday, 6 June 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

only 27 votes :-(

i just feel that New Order are one the the best bands ever. that being said, this might have their weakest moments (not including the newer stuff(which i don't really know)).

Mr. Boo Radley (Bee OK), Monday, 7 June 2010 05:45 (fifteen years ago)

I like them a lot, but not this album, and didn't form a relationship with this to be able to pick a *best*.

Mark G, Monday, 7 June 2010 07:26 (fifteen years ago)

Surprised there's not more votes for Chosen Time. It has that deep warm mystery of Heart and Soul, and still sounds like the future.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Monday, 7 June 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

I also voted Chosen Time

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 7 June 2010 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

Chosen time was my #2, but I felt that ICB needed some attention (even though pretty much every other recorded version is superior).

Millsner, Monday, 7 June 2010 23:06 (fifteen years ago)

This is very close to being New Order's best album.

the british must pay for this (HI DERE), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

love the production on this record, don't find it monochromatic at all.

zappi, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

It's really not. I'd agree that the production buries things somewhat, but it's brimming with details and interesting sounds.

Millsner, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

this album evokes a feeling I can't quite put a finger on and which few other albums do. I rarely put it on but when I do it's like manna.

fruiting bodies of minds in agony (dyao), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 01:55 (fifteen years ago)

This is very close to being New Order's best album.

Yeah totally! If only it weren't for that one New Order album that's miles and miles better... what was it called... Technique? Power Corruption and Lies? Oh wait, maybe I was thinking of Low-Life or Brotherhood... or even Republic... so, wait, it's actually their sixth best album. And the worst of their first six. I guess that's pretty close?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 04:44 (fifteen years ago)

ha. it's like calling The Top the best Cure album. i can totally respect where they are coming from but really? no doubt great, i personally enjoy just about everything else, more.

Mr. Boo Radley (Bee OK), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 05:12 (fifteen years ago)

It's always been Dreams....

Blue Sky Whine (SeekAltRoute), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 05:39 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think Dan's any more wrong than ilxor, and I'm sure he could make a case for Movement being the best as much as ilxor (or me, or at least someone more articulate than me, or whoever) could make a case for Technique. And I know I probably sound incoherent, but on any given day, I too might pick Movement as their best. Although, the next day...

Point being, there's no point. I mean, no point drenching our opinions in layers of alienating sarcasm as this field is wide open.

Lostandfound, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 22:18 (fifteen years ago)

^solitary posts that sum up the spirit of ilm imo.
I feel that way about music most of the time.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 22:36 (fifteen years ago)

Glad I'm not alone. Is there a sad lol emoticon?

Lostandfound, Thursday, 10 June 2010 03:41 (fifteen years ago)

missed this. would have been doubts even here.

akm, Thursday, 10 June 2010 07:11 (fifteen years ago)

three years pass...

I'd forgotten how massive the Peel version of ICB could sound on good speakers. Funkier, dronier and even more absorbing than the album version

one year passes...

I've been listening to Movement a fair amount today after realising I hadn't given it a listen for quite some time - 'Doubts Even Here' has always been my favourite track on this, but my god are there some great musical moments on this record. The way that 'The Him' drops down to the sustained chord that creates tension before the band come thudding back in is masterful, and Hannett's treatment of the drums and percussion on 'Senses' is just incredible.

Turrican, Tuesday, 15 September 2015 19:16 (ten years ago)

i missed this poll. my favourite would be truth, i guess. it is such a fierce song, esp. the live versions. this album is almost flawless, only chosen time is not top notch. an amazing moment in music, when joy division turned into new order, is captured here. how they slowly shift from the dark and dense joy div to the life-affirming rhythm-orientated dance combo new order always leaves me speechless.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 16 September 2015 06:07 (ten years ago)

"ICB" was robbed here

this is like the best second half of an album ever
