'I could really give it the melody it never had.'

Personally I'm all for it, my only fear as such is that the beats won't be as great as the original's are.

"I could really give it the melody it never had."

okay fuck you lady gaga

i am down with both DM and lady gaga but when i try to shoehorn her voice into this song it makes my brain hurt

ok which one of you is her

She's more of a man than I'll ever be

Wenlock & Mandelson (Tom D.), Thursday, 3 June 2010 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

...I was so surprised that many Depeche Mode fans appeared to be Lady GaGa fans. I didn't know the band existed until I saw a mash-up of 'Paparazzi' with 'Just Can't Get Enough'."

yeah see that does not bode well

CUSE EX MACHINA (jjjusten), Thursday, 3 June 2010 15:19 (fifteen years ago)

also i call complete bullshit on that statement

why is it unbelievable that lady gaga had never heard of depeche mode? I'm about her age and I'd bet half the people I know wouldn't know who they are.

iatee, Thursday, 3 June 2010 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

(this is obv gonna be awful)

iatee, Thursday, 3 June 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)

eh, i dont buy that thing about never hearing them at all. a) certain DM songs (people are people and for sure personal jesus) are kind of constantly in circulation both for airplay and as references (lots o personal jesus jokes out there in the mainstream) b) as somebody hell bent on establishing her cred as a visual/video artist, you cant tell me that no one ever sat her down and had her watch the "wrong" video. c) it isnt as if DM was an underground sensation really, the penetration into the mainstream has been significant, and over a long span of time. LG seems pretty steeped and studied in pop culture, i find it implausible that she never stumbled across these guys.

gated community of Mordor (jjjusten), Thursday, 3 June 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

also i think its fair to say that LG is a pretty good example of the "unreliable witness", shes smart enough to say things that will get her quoted and discussed

gated community of Mordor (jjjusten), Thursday, 3 June 2010 15:49 (fifteen years ago)

You know, the more I think about this the more I think it could work. I'm basing this pretty much solely on how much I love Gaga but I'm willing to keep the faith until I hear it and decide otherwise.

Aqua Backrat (ENBB), Thursday, 3 June 2010 15:49 (fifteen years ago)

I predict that this will still be a dumb song

'I'd never even heard of depeche mode' isn't even a controversial statement tho! I'm sure she's heard 'personal jesus' on the radio or something, but in the non-ilx world it's not that crazy for somebody who grew up in the late 90s/00s to not be super familiar with 80s music.

You can't expect the Gaga to work miracles now, can you? (xp)

I think it could totally work.

Haha I just realized I made Depeche's Twitter fan feed about this:

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 3 June 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

well of course it's going to "work" but will it be worth it? hell no.

Oh and in the feeling old sweepstakes, also from Depeche's page:

Basic are an electro alternative duo from Basildon, Essex, England. The Band was founded by cousins Louis Hyde (lead vocals) and Dean Oldfield (Chief Songwriter, Keyboards) in 2005 due to their joint passion for music. Their music is influenced by their uncle (Martin Gore), as well as bands like New Order, Joy Division and Kraftwerk.

Crut I think you need to just let go and embrace Gaga. It'll all be OK. I promise.

I like "Paparazzi" and "Bad Romance"! And they have nice melodies. But I gotta call Gaga out for 1) implying that she could do better things with the "People Are People" melody than Martin Gore and Alan Wilder and Dave Gahan. Hell, Andrew Fletcher could do better with the melody than she could based on her track record. 2) having never heard DEPECHE MODE before wtf, I mean I know most people mine & gaga's age don't know DM but they are prominent enough to be noticed by anyone who relies on as many New Romantic signifiers for their career as Lady Gaga. Next thing you know she'll say she never heard Grace Jones before searching for her own name on youtube.

I say that as someone who never really heard more than one grace jones song until like 3 days ago btw, it's just that I expect someone who is making their schtick be how stylistically innovative and different they are to have done at least some cursory research about people who have done the same things in the past

BEEEEeeeeooooeee rara people be people (crüt), Thursday, 3 June 2010 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

FWIW, I always thought that "People Are People" was one of DM's weaker songs. Interested in hearing the Gaga version.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 3 June 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

It's a terrible lyric (as Martin's said more than once) and the nag of the chorus probably drove them nuts live -- BUT the arrangement saves it, those are some of the best beats they ever made, not to mention the bass, and if you stripped out the lyric and had it be a pure instrumental that thing would be seen more clearly as the real monster it is, but it wouldn't have been anywhere as notable a pop hit.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

I feel like she'd do a better "Enjoy the Silence" -- something with a strong melody but a smoother beat for her to bulk up. Doing "People Are People" is kind of ambitious: a lot of stuff about the rhythm and lead vocal is ... well, not that the song is outdated, but I'm not sure it'd fly to replicate very closely today!

oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:06 (fifteen years ago)

I'd say the stupid lyrics, hinting at sophistication, are exactly why it became a pop hit.

theskysgoneout (Jason Pitzl-Waters), Friday, 4 June 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

However, we advise miss Gaga to do some fact checking before she takes a shot at a Depeche Mode classic. In the same interview she namely appears to believe that Vince Clarke (Erasure) is still part of the band: "I'm a huge fan of Erasure and it was so funny when I heard that Vince is also a part of Depeche Mode! It's so unlike his Erasure sound!" So how did she end up choosing "People are people"? Simple: "My manager choose the song for me, he knows things so much better." Ok... well, you all know what to expect: an Erasure version of "People are people". That promises to be funny!
