This looks kind of good actually...

village idiot (dog latin), Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:16 (fifteen years ago)

not a bad line-up! except for pumpkins and dishwalla.

scott seward, Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:17 (fifteen years ago)

I love Failure's cover of "Silence" almost as much as I do the original.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

i have a copy of this somewhere in the basement, and have prob not listened to it in uh 12 years or so. maybe tonight!

as i recall the deftones one was kind of a stunner, as was the veruca salt, but yeah i think i srsly played this once during one of my many binge buying experiences

gated community of Mordor (jjjusten), Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:20 (fifteen years ago)

what the hell is a GusGus or a Monster Magnet?

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:22 (fifteen years ago)

GusGus is/was an Icelandic electro-pop troupe, and was considered the successor to The Sugarcubes for a short while. Monster Magnet was a full-on testosterone fuelled super rock band, kind of like The Darkness but less NWOBHM and less cheesy.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:24 (fifteen years ago)

Monster Magnet were pretty awesome. Less so Gus Gus afaik.

village idiot (dog latin), Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:25 (fifteen years ago)

Just looked, apparently Monster Magnet still exists as well. Who knew!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:26 (fifteen years ago)

So do GusGus! And HI DERE will have all your collective heads for any mockery of them.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:28 (fifteen years ago)

The Deftones one was indeed fantastic, it was actually the first hint I had that they were going to stand out from the nu-metal deadzone. Covering Depeche was unexpected enough (Linkin Park's modelling on them didn't happen until a couple of years later), but covering a pretty obscure album track -- and doing it very well -- was a clearer sign.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:30 (fifteen years ago)

Unless you were a fan, this is probably the GusGus song that anyone who even remembers GusGus will remember:

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

some of you people are unbelievable. GusGus 'Attention' is one of the best albums of the 00s.

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

This thread has surely served a purpose then.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

bit drunk tbh. by one of the best i mean it's in my personal top 40.

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:45 (fifteen years ago)

so heres the gus gus cover:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEkqFShYAdw

gated community of Mordor (jjjusten), Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

Rammstein pisses all over this tho

Siegbran, Friday, 4 June 2010 10:18 (fifteen years ago)

^ monumental cover.

FAILURE

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Monday, 14 June 2010 03:43 (fourteen years ago)

"Never Let Me Down Again" by The Smashing Pumpkins

worst idea ever. i'd rather hear gwar cover this song.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 14 June 2010 03:45 (fourteen years ago)

Actually I always thought this was definitely one of the better Pumpkins covers.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 June 2010 04:49 (fourteen years ago)

listened to the deftones cover again and i rescind my endorsement it is terrible

Ok so play by play:

Pumpkins cover sounds like a parody of "how would billy corgan sing this when in one of his most self-indulgent moments". Graaaawwwnd, sk-ay-ayeeee, wearing the trawwwwsers. Eh.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 06:26 (fourteen years ago)

ok god lives underwater is supposed to be way more embarrassing sounding than this right? i mean its still some bland skiffle beat techno garbage but i was expecting faux industrial poofest. although i am now thinking that i am thinking of stabbing westward but uh same difference i thought.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 06:30 (fourteen years ago)

Failure cover is great. Fair bias assessment - love this band, but yeah this is kind of perfect, although tbf it does cling pretty close to the apron strings of the original.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 06:36 (fourteen years ago)

Hate this cure cover. Sounds like the soup dragons w/Robert smith phoning in the vox.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 06:38 (fourteen years ago)

Dishwalla - hahahahahaha NO, shut up sleazy dude.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 06:40 (fourteen years ago)

Ok my memories are obv flawed, veruca salt is also hot garbage despite what I said upthread. The version in my head was awesome tho, someone should have recorded that.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 06:42 (fourteen years ago)

Meat beat is ok but didn't really need to happen.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 06:44 (fourteen years ago)

Hooverphonic is the first one in a while to be interesting, but it's taking all the creepy out of the original so it sounds kinda whitewashed and disposible. Still better than a lot of this so far.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 06:48 (fourteen years ago)

Haha I have to keep in mind that there is more than one "locust". Would have preferred a cover by the other one. This sounds like a black velvet flag cover and I fucking hate it. Is Richard cheese in this band? Fuck this.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 06:50 (fourteen years ago)

Self cover is awesome. It's this vs. Failure so far. I miss this dude.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 06:52 (fourteen years ago)

Monster magnet sounds like it's just Dave whatshishead submitting a scratch vocal track and then some random cheeseball put some mediocre techno under it.

Speaking of which, why the hell couldn't they get at least one decent techno thing on here (and normally meat beat would count but that song was urgggggh)?

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 06:57 (fourteen years ago)

Rabbit on the moon. This lady is trying too hard. This is too long. These peeps do not get this song. I am angry. Ok adding this beat 2 minutes in is making things much better. Kind of liking this now, one of you assholes w/ some electronic chops should have managed this earlier. Still hate this lady, every time she shows up the song starts to suck more.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 07:01 (fourteen years ago)

Apollo 440 - hahahahahaha this reminds me if that first underworld album that they never want to talk about or admit to! Fucking dreadful

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 07:04 (fourteen years ago)

lol I actually like those two Underworld albums from the 80s.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 June 2010 07:06 (fourteen years ago)

gus gus - finally somebody w/some electro sensibility shows up. great brave reinvention, totally worth slogging through all the missteps so far. maybe better than the original in some ways. thank god.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 07:09 (fourteen years ago)

xpost: admission - "change the weather" is actually a great song that i will throw down for against much adversity. this apollo 440 band is like a shitty imitation of that tho.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 07:11 (fourteen years ago)

actually i really like thrash too. still, apollo 440 can suck it.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 07:14 (fourteen years ago)

relistening, this deftones cover is ok. i think my initial take on it was colored by really loving the original.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 07:16 (fourteen years ago)

ehhhhhhhhhh rammstein. always the bridesmaid, never the laibach.

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Monday, 14 June 2010 07:18 (fourteen years ago)

Come on, Laibach isn't even halfway as interesting or good as Rammstein.

Siegbran, Monday, 14 June 2010 08:36 (fourteen years ago)

their stripped cover IS terrible, though.

Krystal Chic (crüt), Monday, 14 June 2010 08:39 (fourteen years ago)

Pumpkins cover sounds like a parody of "how would billy corgan sing this when in one of his most self-indulgent moments". Graaaawwwnd, sk-ay-ayeeee, wearing the trawwwwsers. Eh.

completely disagree here, for the most part his vocals are hushed and breathy and a world away from his most egregious caterwauling. and the guitars are lovely.

sent from my neural lace (ledge), Monday, 14 June 2010 09:57 (fourteen years ago)

I learned to drive in 1998 and one of the other girls in Drivers Ed insisted on playing this in the car. I voted for the Hooverphonic one.

Most embarrassing and lolsome one on here, by far is "Stripped." It misses the camp mark by just enough to be grating. I took German my sophomore year of high school and everyone had to do a project: a video, skit, or something to show to the class. One kid had taken the class only because Rammstein just got popular in the States – he got mad at a kid from Germany who tried to tell us Rammstein was stupid. Anyway, for this kid's project, he showed us a 10 minute video of him doing BMX tricks, over which he had dubbed the German version of "Du Hast," followed by the English version of "Du Hast," and then Rammstein's cover of "Stripped." So in addition to Rammstein's "Stripped" generally being a shitty song, I will forever associate it with this mouthbreather jumping over dirt mounds on a bicycle.

Nobody else thinks the Monster Magnet track is a copy of NIN circa Pretty Hate Machine?

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 21:43 (fourteen years ago)

three months pass...

the only covers off of this that I actually remember are Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure and GusGus (which is what I would have voted for)

GLEERILLAZ! (HI DERE), Thursday, 14 October 2010 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

I remember buying this because I heard Failure's cover at a party and then playing it way too often. I remember really liking the Deftones cover (didn't hurt that that was also favorite DM song at the time), also liked the Rammstein song. I never got around to buying all the Depeche Mode albums so there's a couple of songs on this thing where the cover version is actually the only one I've heard.
