Dischord Records discography 2003-2010 poll

the last Fugazi album was released in 2001 and the [i]20 Years of Dischord[i] box set was released in 2002, and I thought it'd be interesting to look at the years since then. I've enjoyed a lot of this stuff but it doesn't seem like there's been much in the way of consensus favorites or breakout hits. maybe I'll do polls for earlier eras if there's interest, possibly w/o Fugazi albums just to make it interesting.

Black Eyes - Cough takes it for me. Amazing.

Jamie_ATP, Monday, 7 June 2010 21:23 (fifteen years ago)

my top 5, more or less:

2005 147 Lungfish Feral Hymns
2004 139 Beauty Pill The Unsustainable Lifestyle
2006 160 The Evens Get Evens
2005 149 Medications Your Favorite People All in One Place
2008 159 Faraquet Anthology 1997-98

liked a few others, only really disliked the first Joe Lally solo album (didn't hear the 2nd) and the Andalusians EP. saw French Toast, Q And Not U and All Scars live but never bothered to check out their records.

some dude, Monday, 7 June 2010 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

The S/T Black Eyes disc. I love the first two Q and Not U albums, but I've never heard Power. I like The Evens okay, but they aren't like "best" worthy.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 7 June 2010 22:11 (fifteen years ago)

french toast in a cave gets points for the name. want the follow up to involve foxes and boxes.

the other is a black gay gentleman from Los Angeles (contenderizer), Monday, 7 June 2010 22:15 (fifteen years ago)

I have no idea who any of these bands are.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 June 2010 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

a pretty large percentage of them feature members of Fugazi or Smart Went Crazy

some dude, Monday, 7 June 2010 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

Not sure I've heard enough of these to vote, but I really, really like the s/t Evens album, so that.

Though I should go back and listen to Beauty Pill and Faraquet to see if I still like them, and French Toast to see if I've started liking them as much as I was told I would (or uh at all, really).

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 7 June 2010 22:25 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah it has to be the first Evens record.

Bilderbooger (van smack), Monday, 7 June 2010 22:38 (fifteen years ago)

139 Beauty Pill The Unsustainable Lifestyle
152 Soccer Team 'Volunteered' Civility and Professionalism
157 Antelope Reflector

^ these are my three favorites. Despite who The Evens are, I could never fully get into either record.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 June 2010 22:41 (fifteen years ago)

I prefer the first Beauty Pill ep to their other output.

Bilderbooger (van smack), Monday, 7 June 2010 22:43 (fifteen years ago)

Lungfish is a no-brainer for me here

underwater, please (bear, bear, bear), Monday, 7 June 2010 22:46 (fifteen years ago)

Antelope's "Reflector" is my total sleeper of this batch, but Q and Not U's "Power" might get my vote.

The Lungfish albums from this era are not their best, but are still way better than almost all albums by any band ever.

The Make Up thing is a VHS/DVD and is amusing.

I'm a total Dischord nerd and I've never heard of 2007 / 160½ / Fast Piece of Furniture / Adventures in Contentment, but I suspect it might be a Jeff Nelson band.

Black Eyes were SO good live.

The Soccer Team album is really tuneful and unique.

Dischord hasn't put out my last few favorite DC things (The Points, the Title Tracks full length, the recent Daniel Higgs album), but I hope they keep going with their remastering/re-pressing efforts.

Hey, does Guy Picciotto write music anymore? I know he toured with Vic Chesnutt, but does he ever play out or anything?

Becky Facelift, Monday, 7 June 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

title tracks 7" for sure

Help Im minger (electricsound), Monday, 7 June 2010 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

The Title Tracks full length is awesome too. In all seriousness, why doesn't that get more attention? The songwriting is really amazing!

Becky Facelift, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 12:27 (fifteen years ago)

extremely sweet sounding 8-track recording too

It does not seem like it. Unless this live soundtrack counts:

A live collaboration with (Jem)Cohen and DJ/Rupture, Andy Moor (the Ex) and Guy Picciotto (Fugazi), Mexico City By Chance, premiered in Mexico City in 2009 and was presented at the Santiago Film Festival in Chile that August.

2003 137 Lungfish Love is Love

^one of my friends constantly puts this one post-club or whatever when shitfaced so I have listened to it quite a bit this year - it's probably the best thing here

From a Paste interview with Q and Not U/Title Track's John Davis:

Paste: It seems like Dischord Records is less visible now, too. The label doesn’t sign a lot of new bands or release many new albums.
Davis: The label has really wound down in a lot of ways. Dischord still exists, and it still has a lot of purpose, but they’re more concerned with making sure they stay afloat and that business continues so they can keep their catalogue in print. They’re not doing too much in the way of new bands, and I know that Ian is not really excited in much of what’s going on ... meanwhile, bands from D.C. aren’t touring, so they aren’t making a name for themselves. Very few people can name more than a handful of bands from D.C. now, so D.C. has really fallen off the map nationally.

Evan R, Friday, 11 June 2010 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

There have been articles about John Davis' points in both the Washington City Paper and the DC version of the Onion. I think I or someone might have linked to them in the Capitol Swamp thread.

curmudgeon, Friday, 11 June 2010 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

That's a bummer. I haven't lived in D.C. in many years, but I've always tried to keep up with the music scene there from afar for nostalgia's sake (and for the fact that so many of my all time favorite bands came of the scene). But over the last few years I've struggled to find bands from D.C. that I've really liked. I figured that I was just old and that maybe it became uncool to be on Dischord and so I didn't know the new labels, or something, but it seems like there just aren't too many new exciting bands there these days. Is that unfair?

(Oh - I checked out some of the stuff on that Fan Death label after reading that article about the shit-talking label bosses, but I didn't dig much of it).

I have liked all the Felt Letters (Ian Svenonius and Brendan Canty) songs I've heard - http://www.myspace.com/feltletters - but the Spiv seems to be sticking with the K Records kind of thing these days.

the black eyes debut is only like half good, but that half is good enough to get my vote

OK so 2 people voted for "other in case I missed anything" but nobody pointed out in the thread anything I missed.

neal page (some dude), Monday, 21 June 2010 23:32 (fourteen years ago)

They don't show up here obviously but I was JUST listening to a cope of Polymer by Bluetip (2000), they are an under appreciated band on this label or in general.

Evan, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 00:48 (fourteen years ago)

copy... how did I type cope?

Evan, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 00:49 (fourteen years ago)

2006 152 Soccer Team 'Volunteered' Civility and Professionalism 0

Hm, I could've sworn I voted for this. I must have voted for Beauty Pill instead.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 01:01 (fourteen years ago)
