Holy fuck, and I thought it was Russell Mulcahy who was the star of the time.

He directed Electric Dreams and the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie! Okay, new all time film hero.

We shot the video in LA some six weeks before anyone had heard the album. On the set Michael was quiet and charming. Whilst I apologetically showed him the few paving stones that would actually light up I asked him if he wanted to rehearse. He replied softly that he was OK to shoot.

poll inspired by the VH1 Classic series "The Art of Music Video" -- watching this guy's episode as they rolled out classic for classic pretty much was "holy fuck" for me

some dude, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

er no wait the show is called "The Music Video Exposed"

some dude, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

Many good ones. Overall it's between the three mentioned in the header, but "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" was a really good video back then too. And "Electric Dreams" is a great underrated 80s movie!

Def Leppard - "Let's Get Rocked"

This puts a pretty giant stain on his legacy, tbh.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 June 2010 23:59 (fifteen years ago)

visually, billie jean is one of my fav videos of all time

stfü (crüt), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

word to both these last two posts

did he do "rough boy" and not its prequel, "sleeping bag"?

I had never wathed the video for "Electric Avenue" – I dug it! I love that it's him looking serious on a boring couch w/normal bad living room lighting.

I voted for "Take On Me," which is not only iconic and grand, but is the only music video that not only has made me cry, but makes me tear up a little every time I watch it.

breaking that little dog's heart chakra (Abbott), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 00:12 (fifteen years ago)

When I found out about downloading videos 10 years ago, "Take On Me" was the first thing I grabbed.

breaking that little dog's heart chakra (Abbott), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

yeah abbott I just rewatched the Electric Avenue vid. <3 him jumping into his living room floor which has turned to water

stfü (crüt), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 00:17 (fifteen years ago)

I remember someone explaining grunge and the late eighties underground scene to me a long time ago by talking about the character Danny from the Ninja Turtles movie, and how he didn't fit in and how his dad didn't "get" him

Cunga, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 00:23 (fifteen years ago)

haha

stfü (crüt), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 00:24 (fifteen years ago)

I loved "Billie Jean," but when "Beat It" and "Thriller" pulled back to just showed Michael dancing, Fred Astaire-movie-style, without cutting it up, that was so much better that "Billie Jean" suffered in comparison. Still a great video. Went with "Take on Me." Can't seem to conjure a single image from those Culture Club videos, though I liked the songs.

Probably Barron's first masterpiece video, and definitely one that put Boy George in the public eye.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 08:25 (fifteen years ago)

Love that song. Totally missed the Jamaican iconography as a kid, or even that it was reggae. The slavery-free antebellum South of "Karma Chameleon" and the Japanese stuff in "Miss Me Blind" is just as, um, racially interesting, or sexually interesting.

Thanks for hipping me to this TV show that I'm gonna now watch online

it's funny how it's not even THAT different from "Money For Nothing," but that little gap in time and technology makes a huge difference

some dude, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

well, also the blocky moving men were cute and cartoony and the "Let's Get Rocked" kid is hideous and retarded looking
