Supported SVIIB last night at the Scala. Ended up enjoying it - kind of Erasure vocals over the top of bog standard blogtronica. But not really feeling the YouToob posted above.

really liking Curtis Lane

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 25 November 2010 10:25 (fourteen years ago)

Also saw him (them, it was a duo live) opening for SVIIB -- really great and we chatted a bit afterwards. I said something about how it reminded me of a-ha and Alphaville and they were all "Two of our favorite bands!"

Anyone else here hearing "When Your Love Is Safe" = Gin Blossoms "Follow You Down" on helium?

And what's up with those overly-loud '80s-drum-machine handclaps? More cowbell!

I like this guy

A41 (admrl), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

Album's beautiful ... I do think it's a bit same-y throughout, in the sense that the compositions are really packed and a bit more aggressive in a slow, icy way than this earlier stuff. I could use a moment or two with some space and quietude, but I do like that he did an instrumental ("Way Too Fast"). The White Sea remix of "Hanging On" is nice too, turns the vocals into an almost neon new romantic thing.

Dare, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

I might see him play next month. I wonder what it will be like? I picture white guy, onstage amidst laptops, being mad senti?

A41 (admrl), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 22:15 (thirteen years ago)

Actually not quite like that, the vibe was more gentle serenity when I saw him last year. Friendly guy too. Also it was a duo for most of the performance I seem to remember.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 22:20 (thirteen years ago)

so...two white guys, onstage amidst laptops, being mad serene?

A41 (admrl), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 22:21 (thirteen years ago)

Trying to remember if there was only the one. And maybe a guitar even!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 22:22 (thirteen years ago)

jesus

A41 (admrl), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

iirc theres a dude on drums too and he (the active child) plays the harp and sings

i am definitely seeing him play next month fwiw

Fun to sing along to
My neighbours love me

lil wayne newton (Ówen P.), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 00:16 (thirteen years ago)

I kind of like them, but after only hearing the classixx remix, I didn't expect them to be so full-on falsetto Enya!

Dan I., Wednesday, 17 August 2011 06:14 (thirteen years ago)

Did not expect this album to turn into quite such an a-ha tribute midway through. Not that that's such a bad thing.

Stevie T, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

A lot of dangerous comparisons being thrown around here

A41 (admrl), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

my mam loves this guy

plax (ico), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

Big fan of the Curtis Lane E.P. - "Take Shelter" being best unsung hero - love this effort. "Playing House" sounds like Mr. Grossi might've spun the Drake/Weekend disc a couple times, but, right nice... and it satisfies my anticipation for this full-length.

suspecterrain, Thursday, 18 August 2011 04:22 (thirteen years ago)

Another nod goes to The Knife's with High Priestess - but still, very welcome.

suspecterrain, Thursday, 18 August 2011 06:10 (thirteen years ago)

A lot of dangerous comparisons being thrown around here
which of course is a good thing, right?

he put on a great live show in NY last month

max, Monday, 3 October 2011 20:07 (thirteen years ago)

Ned, :)

Just saw he will be opening for M83.

tubby permacrocked whorefucker (Lostandfound), Monday, 3 October 2011 20:20 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, saw that too. Sorry to have missed the club tour earlier this year!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 3 October 2011 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah. I've almost listened to zero new music this year, so this is good. What ILM threads are active/good right now for decent 2011 stuff in general?

tubby permacrocked whorefucker (Lostandfound), Monday, 3 October 2011 22:18 (thirteen years ago)

Can't wait to see him next week, missing Yoko Ono for him, yeesh.

Saw him again for the second time tonight. Still so good. I really like the fact that there are two ends to his sound, and I still can't work out if I prefer the twinkly harp stuff or the harp-less heavy synths bits.

The new EP is lovely, shimmery goodness.

Hated Ellie Goulding's cover of "Hanging On" but she did good on "Silhouette" - a song so huge it makes my heart want to burst.
