I really loved the Forest Swords, Matrix Metals and Rangers LPs. Anyone else know if anything else on the label is worth checking out?

― nerve_pylon, Thursday, 10 June 2010 03:48 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah. I love Ducktail's Landscapes.

Mouthus & Axolotl - "12-25-04"
That's the only one I have, though, I think. It's really good!!

New Stellar Om Source comp coming out, drawing on her recent trilogy of CD-R albums. Some beautiful ambient synth stuff, some noiser techno influenced workouts too.
And for something completely different, Susan Alcorn's And I Await The Resurrection Of The Pedal Steel Guitar is gorgeous.

the ducktails album is great
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 10 June 2010 12:32 (fifteen years ago)
I am well-pleased with all of those mentioned except for the Stellar Om Source, which I found to be a bit of a snooze. Forest Swords absolutely threw me for a loop, even more than the others.

Nice to see a thread about these guys. Any article links about the people behind the label?
Loving the Forest Swords record also. Are the other releases mentioned above made by people from the US? I know the Forest Swords guy is from the Wirral.
Must check out that Ducktails record next....
― kraudive, Thursday, 10 June 2010 21:17 (fifteen years ago)
I'm not sure where any of them are from.
― ImprovSpirit, Thursday, 10 June 2010 21:50 (fifteen years ago)
Aside from the opening track of the Forest Swords album, I find it pretty boring and uninteresting. Now, Last American Hero from J. Ferraro I like quite a bit.
I tried listening to the Rangers album -- couldn't get over the horrible production and said fuck this. Ducktails album = just okay.

Am I the only one that thought this thread would be about trying to spell things after getting hammered on malt liquor? :(

That sounds like a contrived joke, but it isn't. :S

the guy that runs OESB used to do Bobby J (an old cassette/ record label) most famous for releasing early Johnny Jewel stuff. they also released a record by my old ensemble, Tonalamotl.try these links:http://white-rose.net/mystere13.htmlhttp://grown-so-ugly.blogspot.com/2008/01/requested-repost-twenty-six-this-skin.html

i like the Alice Cohen LP on OESB.

I don't think the Forest Swords record is an LP. It says on the back it's an EP and the music seems to me, if not remixes of the same tune, then various reworkings of the same idea.

Last American Hero from J. Ferraro I like quite a bit
I need to hear more from this guy, listened to this one a ton:http://www.discogs.com/90210-90210/release/1460371

i don't think "kraudive" is an actual music listener. it seems that he might not understand music. or maybe he just has no idea what he's talking about re: Forest Swords being a bunch of remixes of the same tune. as the songs are very distinct in a way that would be obvious to most listeners of music. also it does say "e.p." on the back cover and it is 6 songs with an overall length of 34 minutes. so although it is indeed album-length the artist chose to call it an "ep" because 4 of the 6 tracks were taken from two limited-run cassette releases - so it was not planned out as an album proper...
― OESB, Friday, 11 June 2010 22:18 (fifteen years ago)
okay. Calm down. I just was writing about my impression of the record. As I said above, I like it a lot. Maybe I was wrong but I thought on listening a fair amount of times that the tunes were kinda similar.
But maybe I'm not listening right, eh?
― kraudive, Friday, 11 June 2010 22:42 (fifteen years ago)
i had to take a nap. now i feel calm. sorry if i insulted you kraudive - just wanted to make it clear that the Forest Swords record is not remixes. he does create a very unique soundworld so the most obvious similarities are to other songs on the same record.. just like Burial's "Untrue" - you could say that it is various reworkings of the same set of ideas and that would make sense. and the closest relative of any song would be to another track on the same record.. but definitely there are very distinct songs within that soundworld. and he never recycles parts of one track to use on another. so speculating that it's all "remixes of the same tune" is dangerously reductive. that's all - thanks for listening... seriously - thanks...

Julian Lynch LP is quite nice.

maybe we can talk about the autre ne veut record here. i like how he tries to really go pop on the whole "twisted indie take on r&b" thing. no hiding behind layers of grime a la how to dress well. not that i don't like htdw, but to me that stuff is more about atmosphere and anv seems to be more about the songs
― uptown churl, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 15:43 (fourteen years ago)
Just got the Autre Ne Veut. Listening now. Trying to get my head around it. It's not at all what I was expecting (not exactly sure what I was expecting) Agreed on htdw, like this much better so far.
― chromecassettes, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 23:58 (fourteen years ago)
yeah it's definitely a pretty weird record. in an era where that descriptor gets thrown around a lot i feel like it actually stands out for being out there, if in a subtle way. puts on a good show, too; if you have a chance to see him, he makes the 'dude with an ipod full of beats' thing work better than most. and i like how it's trying to be a POP record; there's no 'uh it sounds like shit because, you know, memory'
― teflon dawn (uptown churl), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 14:22 (fourteen years ago)
I like the Autre Ne Veut quite a bit, especially Drama Cum Drama. Not sure it transcends its influences, but it's an enjoyable listen.
― seandalai, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 14:59 (fourteen years ago)
i love that ANV disc! i think soldier is my favorite? also, i think side-two is stronger than side-one, which seems odd for an old-school album fan like me (who expects discs to be heavily front-loaded).

Pigeons LP slays. new 7" too. love that band.

went to a listening party for the upcoming julian lynch, sounded nice from what i could tell ('listening' and 'party' don't go together very well, though).

How have people been getting on with the new James Ferraro album? I've seen a lot of positive write-ups but I haven't been taken by what I've heard. It's supposed to be a "pop" move by Ferraro, which turns out to entail scuzzy freeform reimagination of 80's radio rock. Not that this is an irredeemable concept, but there aren't enough hooks and the sound palette is just kind of annoying. This is the best track out of what's on Youtube:

Any thoughts on the new Autre ne Veut EP, or the Creed tribute album from a few months back?
