¡Olé! It's the Matador Records Poll! Part Uno: 001-050

Message Bookmarked

The first 50 catalogue numbers doled out by Matador Records - what's the best of the bunch? I hope you can tell me, as I know feck-all about the early period of the label (in fact, I think I've only heard two of these). That's why I'm doing this, after some prompting by pfunkboy.

Just to note, I'm including deleted and cancelled releases for completeness' sake; in any case it's interesting to see what might have been released, and maybe there were interesting reasons why not...

Thinking Fellers imho, but I haven't heard like 95% of these so

akontenderizer (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 12 June 2010 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

My vote's going to go for Dustdevils Struggling Electric, obviously, since it's my favorite album of all time. But lots of contenders. Without Dustdevils, I'd be tempted to go w/Mother of All Saints, the first half of which is about as perfect as perfect gets.

The Hippy Porn soundtrack can be found online, though it's not that good. Has a hard-to-find Unrest track.

Did Teenbeat 50 really come out on Matador? I remember a pretty funny cover of Pooh Sticks "On Tape" on that one. I've got Three Tea Breakfast...on tape. (About as inside an indie joke as I know.)

dlp9001, Saturday, 12 June 2010 13:54 (fifteen years ago)

Stuff on the list that I also like: Bailter Space, New York Eye & Ear Control, Christmas, Unsane, Superchunk, Bettie Serveert, Tommy Keene, Pavement, Teenage Fanclub...

1st Dustdevils album isn't so hot, other than the Hose cover (Hose=Rick Rubin's band at NYU) which is fantastic.

dlp9001, Saturday, 12 June 2010 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

I voted for "On the Mouth", my favorite Superchunk LP. Was tempted to vote for some of these singles-- "God Knows It's True" and "Tomboy."

President Keyes, Saturday, 12 June 2010 14:09 (fifteen years ago)

Teenbeat 50 really did come out on Matador. I have it on vinyl. I think it came out like 3 years after it was announced.

Bill in Chicago, Saturday, 12 June 2010 14:21 (fifteen years ago)

this should be quite the interesting poll.... leaning toward unsane singles right now...

kumar the bavarian, Saturday, 12 June 2010 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

I noticed there were TWO cancelled Toys Went Berserk releases. Was there a falling out or a contractual problem or something? I don't know the band so it's all a mystery to me.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Saturday, 12 June 2010 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

voting for Superchunk's On The Mouth.

Jonae Mitchelle (some dude), Saturday, 12 June 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

OLE-043 Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 -- Mother Of All Saints

Easy vote - one of my favorite albums of all time.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 12 June 2010 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

quite a list of albums! a lot i haven't heard though ...
i didn't like thinking feller's union when i heard them as a teenager, but I get the feeling i would love them now.

tylerw, Saturday, 12 June 2010 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

was going to vote for Teenage Fanclub's "A Catholic Education" but then didn't.

Slanted and Enchanted

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 12 June 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

The Mark Eitzel 7" edges out Unsane and TFUL282 for me, I liked Come, Bailter Space and Railroad Jerk well enough at the time but am indifferent to their charms these days tbh.

by a long shot

I noticed there were TWO cancelled Toys Went Berserk releases. Was there a falling out or a contractual problem or something? I don't know the band so it's all a mystery to me.

nfi but toys were a great band, though i'm surprised they had this sort of a profile outside of Aus. they weren't around for long after 'sensory' so maybe it was breakup related?

sugar fuckup (electricsound), Saturday, 12 June 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

Chain Gang Perfumed == very easy vote. (Though I'm not sure "Kill For You" is; never even heard of it before, and should probably check it out.) (Oh okay, it's a single; appears on Perfumed.. Curious about the Toiling Midgets one, too; I've heard other stuff by them, but don't know this one.)

xhuxk, Saturday, 12 June 2010 18:30 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, I like other stuff by them.

xhuxk, Saturday, 12 June 2010 18:30 (fifteen years ago)

ANother vote for "On The Mouth," here, although there's like a 5-way tie for #2.

I guess for copraphiles this is gonna be awesome (Pancakes Hackman), Saturday, 12 June 2010 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

how to choose between fellers & pavement is beyond me; might just have to vote for the cancelled royal trux record.

ian, Saturday, 12 June 2010 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

Voted No Pocky for Kitty though could as easily have been On the Mouth.

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 12 June 2010 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

TBH there's a lot here I haven't heard but this would be my POX:

OLE-004 Superchunk -- Superchunk
OLE-009 Unsane -- Unsane
OLE-011 Mecca Normal -- Water Cuts My Hands
OLE-012 Teenage Fanclub -- A Catholic Education
OLE-019 Chain Gang -- Perfumed
OLE-024 Unrest -- Fuck Pussy Galore And All Her Friends
OLE-025 Various Artists -- Teenbeat 50
OLE-035 Superchunk -- No Pocky For Kitty
OLE-038 Pavement -- Slanted & Enchanted
OLE-047 Unsane -- Singles '89'-'92

ksh, Saturday, 12 June 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

I should vote Pavement (not sure whether S&E or WD) but my 90s would not have been my 90s without Mecca Normal, Railroad Jerk and Bailter Space, who are probably not going to do as well as the Pave, so uhh... gonna sit on this one a while and then forget to vote I guess

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 12 June 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

<3 Bailter Space but not v familiar with those records.

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 12 June 2010 21:48 (fifteen years ago)

unsane or no pocky for kitty. hmmmmm

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Saturday, 12 June 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

toss up between a catholic education and the pavement stuff. would like to go for something a little less obvious, but prefer superchunk's b-side covers to their albums (100,000 fireflies! brand new love! lying in state!), tful confused me, fuck pussy galore is horrid, never heard the right bailter space albums, and i only ever dug unsane live. going for s&e.

Voted for Come "Eleven: Eleven." So unfairly overlooked, it's an all-time classic for me. "S+E", the Teenage Fanclub stuff were runners-up.

Anyone know what Circle X -- Compression Of The Species is? I guess "Celestial" resides in the next 50.

Robert Necrofrost, Sunday, 13 June 2010 02:38 (fifteen years ago)

I looked up the Circle X and it seems to be one of a series of 7"s they put out across a few labels in 1992. Celestial will indeed be in the next 50.

mizzell, Sunday, 13 June 2010 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't heard one single album on this list! And here I thought Matador was one of my favorite labels.

musicfanatic, Sunday, 13 June 2010 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

Let's see: Dustdevils "Struggling" can be found here (legally):

http://michaeldustdevil.wordpress.com/2008/11/13/dustdevils-struggling-electric-chemical/

And the tracks to check out are the cover of Hip Priest and Throw The Bottle Full

I guess I must have that Circle X thing, as I went on an eBay binge and bought that whole series of 7" a long time ago. Can't remember much about them, other than a cover of Puerto Rican Ghost that wasn't as good as I'd hoped.

Unless it's already happened, Mother of All Saints would probably benefit from a remaster. Love it, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't cut it on earphones.

New York Eye & Ear has an exclusive (I think) Royal Trux version of Jet Pet that's pretty great. Also a *great* song by Timber (overlooked Rick Brown band). Worth tracking down.

Found a used copy of the Chain Gang CD some years ago and was really excited, but then totally unimpressed on hearing it. Oh well...

dlp9001, Sunday, 13 June 2010 17:04 (fifteen years ago)

Haven't even heard Pavement's Slanted & Enchanted?

This is really a race for second place with that one sticking so far out in front.

Thing is with Superchunk, I don't know how you can pick one over the other much.

earlnash, Sunday, 13 June 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

love the timber 7" i have

finally registered an account here (hello all, nice to meet you!) so i could vote for Come 11:11, a truly underrated record as the gentlemen above already mentioned. runner up for me would be TFC Catholic Education if only for the monumental Everything Flows which might be their best ever song

Bummer - I've never heard this; eMusic and iTunes don't have it, and it goes for almost 20 pounds on Amazon (used)!!!

Becky Facelift, Monday, 14 June 2010 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

In that seller's dreams, maybe. It's not that rare.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0000036RE/ref=sr_1_1_olp?ie=UTF8&qid=1276479451&sr=8-1&condition=used

Also available via Rhapsody, at least in the US.

dlp9001, Monday, 14 June 2010 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

you can get it for around 12-15 on both eBay and Discogs. and it is a truly great record. I recently looked into pricing because I wanted a CD in addition to my 2LP.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Friday, 18 June 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

i voted for 11:11. but i love palomine. and have always really liked slanted & enchanted. first matador record i bought was a catholic education and i didn't really like it. liked the cover though. maybe i would like it now. my friend wayne played the entire new teenage fanclub album on his radio show the other night and it sounded really pretty.

scott seward, Friday, 18 June 2010 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

oh and i love the unsane stuff up there.

scott seward, Friday, 18 June 2010 23:11 (fifteen years ago)

Voting "Lovelyville", narrowly over "Slanted and Enchanted". Haven't listened to "Mother of All Saints" in a while, but probably should.

o. nate, Saturday, 19 June 2010 02:45 (fourteen years ago)

I had no idea Matador had plans to put out some Royal Trux way back then (other than the End of the World stuff). Wild! I've sold off most of what I had from this list, I think all that's left is the two Chain Gang records (great but prefer the comp on Lost), the Eitzel single (good but prefer the Songs of Love Live version), Slanted (unimpeachable), and the Shams (unimpeachable). Deciding between those last two, only one has Sue Garner on it, that tips it.

The Toiling Midgets album Son for me. A few years later you couldn't move for bands doing atmospheric guitar instrumentals, but they did it better than most, earlier than most.

no votes for Catholic Education kind of a shocker

dmr, Saturday, 19 June 2010 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

Pavement takes the top spot, followed by Superchunk - not a huge surprise. That is a shocker about A Catholic Education, though (it was one of the only ones I'd heard before starting the poll).

I've been checking out the Dustdevils myself; they're a Sonic Youth rip-off, surely, but I like that kinda thing. Might check out the Toiling Midgets next. Thinking Fellers didn't really do anything for me, which was a shame as I was hoping to like them. Oh well, one likes what one likes, I suppose.

But anyway, Part Dos is now up.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Saturday, 19 June 2010 23:11 (fourteen years ago)

Babylon Dance Band was really good. I have a sweet 7" by them. Not on Matador though...
