no one would ever vote for Dirty Work, would they? ;)

will never understand ilm's abiding love for GHS.

and yeah i think Exile's got this

GHS has three or four really good songs. but it's no classic stones record.

tylerw, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

i mean i like it fine, maybe even a lot on some days, but why it's regarded over stuff like IORnR (which i think is vastly underrated), i'm not sure i understand.

We'll never reach consensus on those three mid seventies albums.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

GHS is the last stones alb to sustain a (fuggy) mood the whole way through, works as a gd 'comedown' alb after Exile

If I save seven songs from those three albums it's plenty:

Starfucker
Fingerprint File
Memory Motel
Fool To Cry
Hand of Fate
Crazy Mama

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

wish you'd done included 4 pre-exile too, aftermath woulda thrown the oldies fans like me a bone

Brio, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 01:29 (fifteen years ago)

Echoing something I've said in other threads, I'd rather see a fight between their various greatest hits collections...

dlp9001, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 01:39 (fifteen years ago)

Surprised "Aftermath" didn't make it too, but hey.

2 days to go..

Mark G, Sunday, 27 June 2010 22:50 (fourteen years ago)

Let It Bleed. I love EOMS to death, almost love it more purely from a fan's perspective, but can't see anything more perfect than Let It Bleed--ne plus ultra

iago g., Monday, 28 June 2010 01:00 (fourteen years ago)

GHS, cuz that's just how it is these days.

I don't think I've ever even bothered to listen to GHS all the way through

They were much better at being "professional" in the eighties, although not many people I know share this view. And they were much more than that on Dirty Work, in which they turned their contempt in on themselves, with a booming production as correlative for the war in their hearts.

Tattoo You, Undercover, Dirty Work >>>>>>>>>>> Goats Head Soup, It's Only Rock n Roll, Black and Blue.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 23:15 (fourteen years ago)

don't bother...winter and comin' down again are the only good songs on it

iago g., Tuesday, 29 June 2010 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

Goats Head Soup is not as bad as it's made out to be. It just starts off with the mother of all clunkers, Dancing With Mr. D. It's not in the same universe as the previous 4, but what is?

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 01:21 (fourteen years ago)

I think that I need to give Goats Head Soup and It's Only Rock 'n' Roll both a fair listen, but in my head, they still don't occupy the same classic plain of existence as Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile (or even Aftermath and Between the Buttons).

strong boy burger (KMS), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:47 (fourteen years ago)

i like alfred's suggestion of culling the best tracks of the three, 'cause there are some great ones. and over the years i've really become fond of the filler on iorar

"three" being GHS, B&B, IOR'NR

I'm surprised by the fine showing for GHS. Pleasantly surprised because I think its unfairly slagged due to the transcendent nature of the previous four. "Can You Hear the Music" strikes me as one of the Rolling Stones' most psychedelic tunes, and at a time when such a thing had become quite out of fashion. "Star Star" & "Silver Train" are top-notch Stones pelvic-thrust rawkerz. Not a bad LP at all really, which I loved when it came out. That said, GHS hasn't aged as well as Black & Blue which I initially despised but have grown to like quite a lot for its dirty funk shellac.

ImprovSpirit, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno. I slag it because most of the album is no good on any level.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

I kind of look at Black & Blue as kicking off a second period of Rolling Stone classic goodness extending through Tatto You and peaking with Some Girls (not counting the horrible live albums they put our during this period). Never really cared for Undercover, but probably never gave it a fair listen either.

strong boy burger (KMS), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:24 (fourteen years ago)

I cited it above but I don't care for it either: a punked-up aural version of a Haneke movie.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:26 (fourteen years ago)

i ignored it initially b/c i didn't care for "undercover" (song), but i picked it up for pocket change last year and have grown to love it.
