Denim "Novelty Rock"

NO-ONE SEEMS TO TAKE THIS VERY SERIOUSLY. Is basically just b-sides and stuff, I think, but it's fantastic - variously joysome and moving and pulsatingly throbbingly wondrous. The way it's sequenced always puts me in mind of Kittenz And Thee Glitz, for some reason, and has similar gleaming freshness to it.

...anyone?

I loved it! "We lived in a field/Now we live in a tin/we are the new potatoes!" "Son of My Father" is my second favorite song, so I thought"On a Chicory Tip" was terrific, as well. It's a much sillier and more entertaining record that Kittenz and Thee Glitz. I like it a whole lot more.

I think Ned likes it, too. Or so it says on AMG.

the Tron-style INT-ER-NET CUR-TAINS! is best though, although it sounds slightly dated with the Chris Evans reference (remember it was born out of the dadrock-saturated post-britpop era where every twat with a casiotone was doing 'funny' songs about Evans or Lamacq or whoever.. helen love, bis, period pains, anyone that was ever on a Snakebite City compilation etc).

and Supermarket is arguably a better kraftwerk-pastiche than anything Komputer did.

Denim On Ice was a favourite when i was a teenager.. i do find it a bit trying these days, however.

"Novelty Rock" is probably my favourite Denim album, because it's outright laugh out loud funny and silly all the way through, right to the end where "I will cry at Christmas" breaks my heart (but can't you just tell it's an old Felt out-take?) The other Denim LPs I can take or leave - I like 'em but they get a bit too much after a while, a bit of editing wouldn't have gone amiss. But "Novelty rock" comes along, makes you giggle, then sods off again before you can get bored.

Hmm, how did this escape under my radar? I shall have to check this out. I have "Back in Denim", bits of which I like a lot (altho' I haven't played it for years, so maybe its schtick won't sound so "right" as it did back in 1990 - I was "against the 80s" then too).

Another big yes for Novelty Rock from this cornor. But then I like (to a greater or lesser) extent pretty much everything he's done.

The Go Kart Mozart album is also very enjoyable indeed. And like Novelty Rock its snappy and to the point.

I LOVE IT!!!!

It is WAAAAAAY to short and not really worth the import price here in the US but it's great!

My favz are "Internet Curtains" "The New Potatoes" "I Will Cry At Christmas" "Supermarket" "Ape Hangers"

My nephew loves SUPERMARKET.... everytime I take him to the supermarket, we play the song..

I also love it because there aren't any guitars on it and it's mostly electronic. I LOVED the FELT guitar work of MAURICE DEEBANK but the DENIM guitar work is just ok... The best DENIM stuff is electronic.

There is a krautrock/electronica night here in Leicester called "New Potatoes". I wonder if that's where they got the name from?

Indeed so. It's a goofy little listen, isn't it?

AARRRGGGHHHH!!!

Not the New Potatoes.

Suzy tortures me with that every time I go round her house if I start getting stroppy about certain musician friends of hers.

It's the most terrifying song ever. How can you make a bloody root vegetable sound so utterly frightening? But I suppose, anything is possible if you're afraid of cheese.

fings that sounded throwaway as b-sides sound brilliant on this 'collection of throwaways'

two months pass...
How did I miss this? I love Denim. I have the "Middle of the Road" single from this era b/w "Internet Curtains" and the "Great Grape Ape Swingers" and the other two albums, but I didn't know about "Novelty Rock." Is that an Ep?

Ned, Paul, please help me out.

Why isn't this tread about Turbonegro?

Novelty Rock is a compilation LP of Denim's stuff that isn't on "Back In.." and "..On Ice"

Because I am a lazy sod, Kris. Felicity: what Jim said. Drop me a line if you'd like me to make a copy for ya.
