Suggest big bands that function as one fuzzy rhythmic creature. Visceral guitar work. Addictive chanting. James Brown and P-Funk channeled like Robert Quine. Ambitious Lovers? Kind of. There's just not enough of this stuff!
this is also another pathetic attempt on my part to name a great Japanese band, that will once again be overlooked for the country's noise freaks and pop artists. Jagatara

Not really knowing your background or what you normally listen to, it's hard to come up with stuff, but the two bands you mention are of the post-punk ilk; both influenced by dub and funk consecutively and I love them for the reasons you mentioned, but there is a whole load of stuff from that era which pulls off a similar trick - Gang of Four, the Slits, Wire(?) etc. Then you've got the original stuff, Funkadelic of course and King Tubby's to name some obvious ones. Don't overlook disco of course - Earth Wind & Fire, even Boney M is all about the groove. And later on there's always LCD Soundsystem, the Rapture, !!!, Out Hud etc for a 00's take on post punk.

I was thinking of some of those bands as well. The Pop Group too. If anything, post-punk has to do with the underlying attitude of the music i'm looking for. Frantic, kinda ironic. Instrumentally more larger, like Sly & the Family Stone, Prince, and P-Funk. An extra man on percussion. Maybe a blaring horn section. Synths? But even better with some kind of murk, the kind you hear in There's a Riot Going On, Metal Box, Exile on Main St. I'll Check out !!! and Out Hud. Thanks!
And wow, I was just listening to Fela Kuti. He's got something to do with it for sure

Siouxsie 12" maxisingles, Shriekback 12"s and 80s goth rock 12" in general are full of the murk and grooves. One of my fav records of the last decade is the Gossip RMX EP, which is very much in this mold.

A lot of the dancy post-punk stuff ends up sounding real minimal, soundtrack ish even. What about grooves that carry like songs in full force? That huge Rolling Stones single off of Some Girls has that kind of thing going on.

Cosigning Lizzy Mercier Descloux - Funky Stuff, which is just an amazing tune. Listen to other Ze Records stuff like James Chance and the Contortions, Was Not Was and Kid Creole & the Coconuts.
