James Last - classic or dud

Amazingly, no thread for the German master of easy listening - or is there?

This thread is triggered by my seeing that he has an 80th birthday triple CD compilation out. And also, I recently had the good fortune to hear his version of Hawkwind's Silver Machine. The latter has tipped me over into the CLASSIC camp.

3 classics that I know of - Well Kept Secret, Voodoo Party, and Hair: more dud than a big bag of duds.

I love throwing on a James Last record at a party where nobody's listening to the music anyway. It usually takes folks a while to catch on.

One of my pals does this - to shock people when they realise that i) they are listening to good music and ii) said good music is by James Last.

You're missing out. Check out "Voodoo Party" and "Well Kept Secret" for starters, which you can now get on CD as a 2-fer.

RIP

Rip!

Danish jazz station has been playing stuff from Well Kept Secret last 15 minutes, seems like a decent recording! Never would have thought, I mainly know James from poor record collections in flea markets but will get this one next time I pass it in bin browsing

We had a CD of James Last doing classical songs from adverts that I listened to shitloads when I was about 10.
